Nation in denial and Swedish anthem

Today I got this message through a former colluege’s Facebook status.

Message was in Swedish and claimed that the Swedish National anthem is no longer allowed to sing in schools at graduation day:

In Swedish:

First that came through my mind was that this is sick. I am also a bit sceptic to messages at Facebook in general so I decided to Google the matter. I could not find even one newspaper writing about it, and those who wrote about it was private bloggers and Facebook users. There is a Facebook group against it. Besides that I can not find any facts. This still does not mean it is impossible it has been prohibited some places. It is only strange that no newspaper has written about it.

Looking at the Lyrics in The Swedish National anthem you can not find any word of racism.

Here is the Swedish National anthem:

Song video:

Here is the lyrics in English:

“You old, you free, you mountainous North. You quiet, you joyful beauty.
I greet you, loveliest land on earth, Your sun, Your sky, Your meadows green.
Your sun, Your sky, Your meadows green.

You throne upon memories of great olden days, when honored your name spread over the earth.
I know that You are and will be as you were. Yes, I want to live I want to die in the North.
Yes, I want to live I want to die in the North.

I forever want to serve my beloved country, your faith until death will I swear.
Your right I protect with mind and hand, your banner, great the feats it carries.
Your banner, great the feats it carries.

With God I shall fight, for home and hearth, for Sweden, the dear fatherland.
I trade You not, for anything in the world. No, I want to live I want to die in the North.
No, I want to live I want to die in the North.”

Text: Richard Dybeck, 1844
The first two verses is Sweden’s national anthem since 1866

Why should it not be allowed to sing this song on the graduation day at school? I can not find anything in this song that would be bad for school, children or immigrants.  Is it that little word God in the last verse? What should be so bad about it? People often sing along with lyrics containing worse phrases. And even if a muslim would sing this, he or she surely believe in God too. And on top of it even if you look at Jesus as God like many Christians say they do, then the muslims still acknowledge Jesus as a prophet. So what is the problem? And even so. It still is like this that those who come to Sweden they come to a country where most people believe in the Christian religion, if believing anything. And even if you believe in another God you should as a guest allowed to stay be as polite, openminded and understanding that you do not overdo your stay or overdo your claim to rights. What about accepting and adjusting to the country and its culture? You can say whatever you want about religion and religiosity but I think this is to take it to far to ban the national anthem at schools like this. This is fanatism at its worst. Picking on such!

What is my meaning about this? If it is banned for real, what to say about it?

Completely idiotic. They let a racist party to enter Swedish parliament in 2010 (in my meaning horrific), but sing the national anthem may not be done at school? Even though it does not contain even one racist word! Uh????

But apart from that one can safely say that the only racist about The Swedish National anthem is the misguided misplaced aggression against it. I mean, the only reason that it can be perceived as “offensive” is not the song itself, but how it gets used by others such as racists, Nazis and so-called nationalists who use the song as an expression of their faith to the country and so-called pure races. Because of this, it can create a bad atmosphere and feelings hearing it for those sensitive, but then one should rather ban the racists, Nazis and nationalists since they are the ones who ruin the reputation of the song. Still the Swedish National anthem is in no way racist.

And talking about that with “pure races”. Really, who in a country is all “pure”? Really, I do not believe there is any. There is no such thing as pure Swedish. I am for an example white and born Swedish by Swedish parents, and Swedish grand parents and so on. Not that I am a racist or even think it is important.  But thing is that if you look long enough back in time you would probably find an immigrant or more in your blood line, no matter what. Way back in my blood line there are Germans and Polish people. That is only to begin with. There are maybe Italians too. If I continue to search I will probably find even more. Mostly those shouting the loudest about their “purity” do not have the slightest clue about their real blood line. And even if they did know, thinking one is more than anyone else is being a stuck up and a nasty. It is really how people behave that matters when it comes to who’s good and worthy, or who’s bad and unworthy.

And really, you who decide to live in Sweden even though you got a different kind of religion than most Swedes, you should not act like this with for an example the national anthem. You should be polite and thankful that you are allowed to stay. If you are not proud of living in Sweden you should move somewhere else. If you can not accept the national anthem you should really find yourself a hobby instead of launching out at the national anthem. Let the Swedes sing whatever they want to sing as long as they are not racist.

And further more. I live abroad. I am Swedish and living in a foreign country. What would the people in my new country say, think and feel if I claimed it is not allowed to sing the national anthem in the Schools here, only because if I would might have anything against it? It is unheard of. Simply rude!

Singing the anthem is not racism, racism is a way of thinking and something found in mind and heart.

When in Rome do like the Romans. This you do now is unacceptable. It is just as bad as burning the flag and disgrace a nation.

(Jut so you know. I do like my new country’s national anthem.)

I like canoeing, photographing, friends, movies, food, humor, and going on trips. I dislike rudeness, dishonesty, violence, nastyness, and people not caring for others. I do not drink much, I do not smoke and I do not do drugs. I love friends who are kind to me and stick with me. If you want to give me a gift, the best gift is to stop smoking and stop using fragranced products. Then you give me health and that dear friend, is the best gift a person can get. It is a gift of love. I got asthma and I am hearing disabled.

  1. A little late to the party, but we have not banned the national anthem in schools. Quite a lot of schools have NEVER sung it on graduation day so it’s just not a tradition. We have other songs we sing on graduation day instead.

Most schools, however, used to sing the national anthem on June 6 (which is nowadays a national holiday), and ALL schools are required to teach the song according to the national education plan.

This is just a popular myth that is going around.
