Suicide, housebound, fragrance, smoke and chemicals

MCS sufferer sensitive to fragrance, smoke and other chemicals committed suicide by shooting himself.

This might be a posting a bit hard to chew, since it is a harsh reality posting. Being allergic and sensitive to fragrance can make you disabled. Those struggling the worst can not be among people and have to be housebound since the home is the one place fragrance free. Using fragrance is so common nowadays that it is on so to speak everyone, and even added to the indoor air directly using an odor pump. Being housebound can be a lonely business, and loneliness is one of the great causes of suicides. Being unable to have a social life.  Please, stop using fragrance and fragrance products. Please, stop smoking. Think of those who can not be around if you use it.

Rest in peace Michael Durrant (73) from Whales.

Please, read the story.

What is MCS?

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity is an unusually severe sensitivity or allergy-like reaction to many different kinds of pollutants including solvents, VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds), perfumes, petrol, diesel, smoke, ‘chemicals’ in general and often encompasses problems with regard to pollen, house dust mites, and pet fur.

What sets an MCS patient apart from other allergy sufferers is that they react to both large and minuscule levels of irritants.

Sometimes these levels are so low that others are completely unaware that there’s anything potentially troublesome in the vicinity.

Multiple chemical sensitivity – unlike true allergies where the underlying mechanisms of the problem are relatively well understood and widely accepted- is generally regarded as ‘idiopathic’ – meaning that it has no known mechanism of causation and its processes are not fully understood.

I like canoeing, photographing, friends, movies, food, humor, and going on trips. I dislike rudeness, dishonesty, violence, nastyness, and people not caring for others. I do not drink much, I do not smoke and I do not do drugs. I love friends who are kind to me and stick with me. If you want to give me a gift, the best gift is to stop smoking and stop using fragranced products. Then you give me health and that dear friend, is the best gift a person can get. It is a gift of love. I got asthma and I am hearing disabled.

  1. Thank you for posting this Annelie. MCS and suicide are not talked about enough. NOT talking about it won’t make the problem go away; it just leaves marginalised sufferers feeling even more lost and alone. I’ve had a break from the internet for a while because I felt exactly like this. For anyone going through this: stay with us. You are not alone. We are in this together, and together our light will shine through guiding one another into the sunshine once more.

(One person’s right to wear perfume can force another to have to stay home alone, excluded from society.)

    • Sorry to hear that, it is not the way you should have to feel. People should really improve both themselves and all of yours and your life and go fragrance free. I believe it would make a huge difference in your lives. Fragrance users have a negative impact on my health being a asthma sufferer, and even though I don’t have MCS myself I can totally see that it would help you tremendously. Don’t feel down, go out there and find people with the same difficulties as you have. I visited some of my sensitive friends this summer and we had a wonderful time. I am sure there are someone where you live looking for a fragrance free friend, you only have to find this person. Start a conversation and become friends. :) Don’t give up. ☺

  2. Nog har jag tänkt tankar om att livet med denna sjukdom inte är värd att levas, dystra dagar – dystra tankar.
Well, , I have thought thoughts about life with this disease are not worthy to be lived, gloomy days – gloomy thoughts.
