“County Council of Jämtland in Sweden maybe the first to support that Sweden will become smoke-free in 2025. The costs of tobacco, counting production and diseases, is valued cost for the country to be 30 billion annually. In Jämtland costs of smoking is 396 million annually.
– I support a total smoking ban, says parliamentarian Gunnar Sandberg (S), which has been responsible for public health in parliamentary work. I’m not sure that we get there in 2025, but we must be able to set up milestones.
Tobacco Endgame, TE, – Smoke Sweden in 2025 is a public opinion project. The project will produce a political decision as early as next year if a smoking ban by 2025.
It needs a political plan to reach the goal, without a plan at risk the goal of a smoke-Sweden to just be a beautiful vision.
Now Elin Khokhar, Anna Nicolaisen and Ronny Weylandt at the Public Health Centre has developed a plan of Jämtland County Council.
They say it is time that the County Council will take a clear responsibility to citizens. The damaging effects of smoking have been known for well over half a century.
“We can no longer watch as a cynical multinational industry put all energies to lure our young people into a lifelong addiction, which contributes to every other user dies prematurely,” they write.
“While our government helps the tobacco industry to broaden its sales to new markets internationally and say no to scientifically substantiated proposals to limit tobacco use.”
The goal of Jämtland County Council is to join the project to achieve as good health as possible for the county’s residents, and to limit avoidable smoking-related illness and disease to a minimum.
It’s also a great way to conserve resources and taxpayers’ money.
National Board of Health in conjunction with the Public Health Institute has in the report Public Health in 2013 estimated that around 6,600 people die each year from smoking. Now, new research has been done. It shows that smoking killed an estimated 12,000 smokers over the period 2010-2012.”
Yes, and I guess there are a lot of people having asthma who have to seek medical care caused by second and third hand smoking. No I am not guessing, I know since I have had to do it myself too.
Please, quit smoking and save both yours and others health.
