Takk for at du lyttet!

What’s it like to be hearing impaired?

What is it like to be hearing impaired? Loss of hearing is a hidden handicap, you can not see the person has a handicap.  It can be difficult for you who is fully hearing to know the hardship a person being hearing disabled have to handle and endure every day and you then do a lot of things you should not do. Please, view this video and learn how it is like to be hearing impaired and how you can make it easier for the person having a hearing loss to hear you.

Turn to the person you speak to, avoid background noise / sound, avoid making background noise / sound let the room be still , do not talk everyone at once, one at the time! Speak with a clear voice, do not shout! Give written messages!

Please, think about these things and you are a good friend, co-worker, and fellow man!

The video is in Norwegian, to help you understand it I have made a short translation:

“First this video shows everyday situations being hearing impaired, then it shows different kinds of tinnitus. ”

“Loss of hearing and background noise:

  1. In the car – driver speaks to passenger
stort hørselstap = great hearing loss – followed by how the situation sounds
moderat hørselstap = moderate hearing loss – followed by how the situation sounds
lett hørselstap = light hearing loss – followed by how the situation sounds
normal hørsel = normal hearing – followed by how the situation sounds
  2. open office landscape – one co-worker talks while another delivers a message
stort hørselstap = great hearing loss – followed by how the situation sounds
moderat hørselstap = moderate hearing loss – followed by how the situation sounds
lett hørselstap = light hearing loss – followed by how the situation sounds
normal hørsel = normal hearing – followed by how the situation sounds
  3. in the meeting room – everyone talk at once and leader try to break in
stort hørselstap = great hearing loss – followed by how the situation sounds
moderat hørselstap = moderate hearing loss – followed by how the situation sounds
lett hørselstap = light hearing loss – followed by how the situation sounds
normal hørsel = normal hearing – followed by how the situation sounds
  4. in the cantina – to people talking calmly
stort hørselstap = great hearing loss – followed by how the situation sounds
moderat hørselstap = moderate hearing loss – followed by how the situation sounds
lett hørselstap = light hearing loss – followed by how the situation sounds
normal hørsel = normal hearing – followed by how the situation sounds
  5. at dinner partys, restaurants and other gatherings – many talk at once while one try to listen to only one person
stort hørselstap = great hearing loss – followed by how the situation sounds
moderat hørselstap = moderate hearing loss – followed by how the situation sounds
lett hørselstap = light hearing loss – followed by how the situation sounds
normal hørsel = normal hearing – followed by how the situation sounds
  6. in traffic – two people talking in heavy traffic
stort hørselstap = great hearing loss – followed by how the situation sounds
moderat hørselstap = moderate hearing loss – followed by how the situation sounds
lett hørselstap = light hearing loss – followed by how the situation sounds
normal hørsel = normal hearing – followed by how the situation sounds
  7. noisy workplaces – person talking try to talk louder than the noise
stort hørselstap = great hearing loss – followed by how the situation sounds
moderat hørselstap = moderate hearing loss – followed by how the situation sounds
lett hørselstap = light hearing loss – followed by how the situation sounds
normal hørsel = normal hearing – followed by how the situation sounds
  8. at a consert – listening to music (here I actually miss an example of trying to hear a person talking)
stort hørselstap = great hearing loss – followed by how the situation sounds
moderat hørselstap = moderate hearing loss – followed by how the situation sounds
lett hørselstap = light hearing loss – followed by how the situation sounds
normal hørsel = normal hearing – followed by how the situation sounds
  9. in a quiet room – two people talking in a normal conversation without background noise / sounds
stort hørselstap = great hearing loss – followed by how the situation sounds
moderat hørselstap = moderate hearing loss – followed by how the situation sounds
lett hørselstap = light hearing loss – followed by how the situation sounds
normal hørsel = normal hearing – followed by how the situation sounds

Then several kinds of tinnitus follows. Tinnitus is a special kind of hearing problem, not everyone has it.

I hope this translation will help you understand the video.

And remember that a person being hearing impaired is often able to hear if the environment and surroundings are still and good enough, and if they still have hard time hearing there are ways to work around that by using aids. Do care!

Thanks for listening!

I like canoeing, photographing, friends, movies, food, humor, and going on trips. I dislike rudeness, dishonesty, violence, nastyness, and people not caring for others. I do not drink much, I do not smoke and I do not do drugs. I love friends who are kind to me and stick with me. If you want to give me a gift, the best gift is to stop smoking and stop using fragranced products. Then you give me health and that dear friend, is the best gift a person can get. It is a gift of love. I got asthma and I am hearing disabled.
