Batteridrevne lys – Battery-powered candles

(Scroll down for English)

Videnskap.dk

God luft inne.

Clean air and cozy with candles

If you have sensitive airways it is rather often you have to avoid things in life, but in recent time it have been produced battery-powered candles in many different kinds. Therefor you can have that cozy time and fresh air at the same time.

When you burn regular candles og scented candles many health and environmental hazardous chemicals are delivered to the air for example chromium, musk xylene, carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) heavy metals, nanoparticles, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) sodium o potassium salts and more. Candles made of paraffin produce even more particles than pure stearin candles. In a laboratory study with blue-colored paraffin candles is elevated levels of metals such as copper, cobalt, lead and zinc and more measured in the air.

When burning candles a portion of the stearic burn incompletely and form soot particles in the air. Some (but not exclusively these) of the candles emitting harmful substances to indoor air are stearin candles, paraffin candles, scented candles, glimmer candles, gel candles, candles with printed decoration, soya candles, bee wax or palm candles and such. Everything is burnt do emit substances into the air.

“If you burn candles for two hours a day, they account for almost two thirds of the total indoor pollution.” Videnskap.dk

Candles can provide the same indoor air pollution that moderate smoking indoors and at least equivalent contribution one can get from outdoor air pollution. It is therefore important to avoid burning candles indoors. Every time you blow out a light, released 350,000 soot particles – it is as much as from a cigarette! When candle burning, part of stearin burn incompletely. This partially combusted carbonaceous material will form soot particles in the air. These particles consist of a complex mixture of substances, from clean coal to complex organic compounds. More candles in a room with poor ventilation can cause respiratory irritation, asthma symptoms, dizziness and headache. While stearin is a renewable raw material, paraffin is a fossil raw materials that emit harmful greenhouse gases and emit more soot particles. Paraffin is also more flammable. Studies show that we, if we had not used paraffin candles, would have reduced greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to removing 21,000 cars from the roads. Scented candles are worst fumes for asthma and allergy sufferers, they spread substances to air that are allergenic, irritating to the airways and trigger asthma attacks. These candles smell good but do not do your body any service. A survey by the University of Copenhagen, based on 78 people in 58 homes in Copenhagen shows that the use of burning candles can be dangerous: The researchers observed reduced lung function and signs of inflammation in the lungs of people in homes where there are many particles of candlelight. According to consultant Kåre Refvem, who specializes in lung diseases and internal medicine, there is no doubt that the soot particles they inhale from candlelight affects the lungs. There are some people who react to such soot particles, there is a reaction when exposed to polluted air: The mucus membranes becomes irritated, forming more mucus and there be an inflammatory process in the bronchi. In practice, over time, the frequent use of candles and other candles including aggravate a condition of COPD or asthma, and some remain even home from social events, to avoid all the lights.

Children are sensitive and got more sensitive airways than adults whether they have asthma, allergies or other diseases that give them sensitive airways or not. Children who grow have a faster breathing than adults have and draws in more air more frequently than adults. Both children and adults with respiratory problems and allergies have a better health if you avoid burning candles.

The lights in the video in this blog post I bought at Jernia store, they run on two AA batteries and they can be lid using a remote control. You or your child (if you have children) can therefore sit comfy and safely in sofa and light the lights from a distance and they are completely fragrance-free and soot free, and you can be assured that it does not begin to burn in tablecloths and curtains.

Fresh air indoors.

Incense toxic and harmful to health and indoor air

#incense The study followed 61,320 men and women between the ages of 45 and 74 for 12 years. When burned, incense releases carcinogens such as polyaromatic hyodrcarbons (PAHs), a class of toxins that includes formaldehyde and that has been linked to lung cancer in smokers. An earlier study found PAH content in temples that burn incense up to 45 times higher than in homes where people smoke. Incense typically contains other carcinogens such as carbonyls and benzene, which can trigger DNA mutations in human cells. Although the components of incense typically include benign plant and flower matter along with essential oils, most formulations also incorporate not-so-benign artificial fragrances and binders. The smoke produced as incense burns releases particulate matter, and because it slowly smolders, it releases even higher concentrations.” Sudy made by Study director Dr. Jeppe Friborg, of Statens Serum Institute in Copenhagen

As Dr. Len Horvitz, a pulmonary specialist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, said, “Anything that affects air quality negatively is not a good thing. Burning in general and the release of smoke, these things are certainly to be avoided. At the very least, chemical irritants will set off asthma, and that’s reversible. Cancer is not reversible.”

“This is not unlike the type of risk that one experiences from secondhand tobacco smoke,” said Dr. Len Lichtenfeld of the American Cancer Society.

“Burning incense produces particulates greater than 45 mg/g burned as compared to only 10 mg/g burned for cigarettes–more than four times the load. So if you’re sitting right on top of burning incense and breathing it in, you’re getting a heavier whack of particulates than you would from smoking.”

“Incense has been implicated before in numerous studies (along with its cousin, scented candles). One such study found that exposure to burning incense at least once a week during pregnancy increases the risk that the child will develop leukemia by 2.7 times. ”

“Another measured air quality in several Dutch churches that burned candles and incense and found the particulate levels 20 times higher than they were next to a typical busy road. Other studies have determined links between incense allergic contact dermatitis, various respiratory conditions including asthma, and cancers of the nervous system.”

Designer brands?

I do not care for designer clothes and accessories. I do not buy clothes and other stuff because it has a special brand, made by a special designer, is expensive or is the latest fashion.

I buy what I like and enjoy, and what is good quality. I want to look nice and get value for the money I spend.

People only following latest fashion and brands and let themselves get indoctrinated by designers, advertising and related fortune digging (begging) by designers a.s, such also in magazines, and luring people with celebrity this and that, I feel are not independent.

They follow others direction like a herd of sheep’s following the orders by the shepard dog.

People judging other by the brands they use are superficial fools.

The person behind the facade is much more interesting and important.

It show lack of confidence chasing brands. A person with a need to show off in brands, and /or latest fashion looking like everybody else, show clearly they do not dare walk and make their own path.

It is not money or brands that make a person, it is what is inside.

Show strength, pick with your own mind, not what the shepard dog tell you to.

Decorated – part 2

Decorated part two – or long story curtains…

Some days ago I wrote the blog entry Decorated about some curtains I bought, and I wanted another pair of curtains that was the same as the other ones….

Last summer I bought a pair of curtains and they were very nice. Matched perfectly to a table-cloth I got as a gift from a friend. It was of Thai-silk and she had bought the table-cloth in Thailand. I actually bought a whole set of three pairs of curtains to match that table-cloth, and wanted an extra pair of those off white ones. I like to be able to switch curtains from room to room, and therefore I like a double pair of it all.

The day before yesterday I went to the store were I live. I asked the lady in the store for the curtains I wanted. They had a display curtain hanging in the store and I showed her the curtain I wanted. But here is where the story starts. She remembered the name of the curtain wrong, and mistook the name of the curtain I wanted. She said the wrong name. She looked up the wrong name and there are no curtains in store, she said. But there are curtains in Levanger, she said. I got the number there, and called. But in Levanger they said they got no such curtains, as the lady in the first store said it would be. In Levanger they said they got the curtains in Tønsberg. I called Tønsberg and told the woman in the store the name of the curtains I got from the store where I live. Yes, they got such curtains, she said, and promised to mail them to the first shop where I live. All well I thought to my self, and went home. Today I got a phone call from the shop here. The woman on the phone told me there had been a mixup with the name of the curtains I wanted, and that they actually had the curtains in their store. She asked if I could come? I went, and now I got the curtains I wanted from the first store I went to.

Long story curtains..

long story curtains..

All well. I got what I wanted. :)

Decorated

So I have made some changes and have fiffed my home up. Ironed some curtains, put some hooks on the wall and added some nice strings to hold them. Bought and mounted to the wall all my self. Actually I have cabled the lamp too myself when I moved in. I am a bit of a handy woman :)

curtains, hooks and cables

That is the way I am. I learned early to cable lamps and such. I was eight years old when my father (who was an engineer) learned me how to do that. And I was an eager learner. He said, Women have to be able to do things too. He hated women not able to do anything by themselves, waiting for the man to do it for them.

And I am glad he tought me that. I have had use for that knowledge cabling lamps many times. And often thought of how much money I have saved on doing it myself and also how much time I have saved being able to do it myself.

Those curtains I bought last summer. Actually I wanted two pairs of those curtains but they were a bit expensive so I could not afford them at the time. I had bought some other curtains too.

So this year when I went to the shop to find the strings and hooks I asked to get a pair of those curtains. No, sorry the lady in the shop said. We are out of those. She browsed the computer to see if another shop got any? Well there were some in Levanger she said, but that is very far away… Give me the phone number I said, I will call them and ask if they can send it to me. I got the phone number.  I called, hoping for good luck.. The lady in Levanger said that no, we do not got any of those curtains here. My heart sunk. But I think they got some in Tønsberg, she said, and I got some hope back. She gave me the phone number to the shop in Tønsberg. I called, hopeful, and talked to the lady in that shop. And yes, they had actually a pair of the curtains there and the right colour too! But Tønsberg is veeeery far away. I told her I live far away, and asked most politely if she could consider sending them to me? Yes, she said. I will send them to the shop where you live if you pay for both freight and curtains. All Ok, I said. I gladly pay for the freight. It costs more to go by care there. (And actually it is way to far go to buy curtains, I thought to myself.) Oh, I am so happy now about finding them. She will send them. Now I just have to wait for the phone call. :)

I have two windows in the living room. Now I can use them in the living room too whenever I want. Nice!
