Fresh air does not smell of fragrance

Frisk luft lukter ikke av parfyme.

Fungerer det alltid på ren vilje? – Does pure will always work?

(Scroll down for English)

Ta astma for eksempel.

In English

Is it always enough with sheer determination?

It is often one hears about people with disabilities who manages the most amazing things on sheer willpower, they do not give up, and conducts. It is inspiring and shows both courage and determination to master. An example of these is Jessica Cox. She has no arms and learned how to fly a airplane.

People who have disabilities and show all they can is a source of inspiration for both the disabled and fully functioning human beings, and they truly deserve it. But the backside of the coin is that those who can not do such things are in a way a little looked down upon or felt sorry for. Yes not all and not always, but if you do not show the attitude when you are usually seen as negative. But is this true?

Take for example asthma. Many struggle with pollution in the air from perfume, scented candles and ordinary candles, incense, fragrance and strong smelling hairspray, body spray, fragrance deodorants, so called air-freshener whether it is scent blocks, manual or equipment that pumps out scent on timers etc., tobacco, fragrance detergents, fabric softeners, cleaning agents, etc. In a society where doing things on sheer will, overcoming issues and success doing so is seen as heroic, makes also a climate where if you say it does not go then you become somewhat looked down upon or seen as negative.

Asthma is recognized as a handicap by the WHO, EFA, and LDO, when it is a physical illness that creates obstacles and hinders in everyday life. Many people who have disabilities can overcome their handicap on sheer will, but does this go with asthma?

I very much admire ladies like Jessica Cox and everyone else with her who manage to overcome their handicap and do things anyway, just like everyone else does. At the same time I get a little sad and conscious of my own handicap as I can not be blamed for it and that I can not rule over it.

A person who has asthma (or other sensitivities that responds to the same conditions) that go into a room where it is used fragrance marketing, s.c. air-freshener, perfume on people and clothing, fragrance hair sprays, body sprays, fragrance deodorants, scented candles, incense, strong detergents and perfumed cleaners, etc. may enter and reside in a room where all this is the sheer determination? No, it is not possible, not even with medication, at least not those of this group who have sensitivity to these substances in the air. Some are not even helped by medicine. Yes some have more sensitivity than others, others have  less, but common is that one can not get in a room where it is impure air. To remain in this environment of pure will like other disabled people can overcome their handicap is not possible for many people with asthma and allergies, it does not matter how much you want to, it doesn’t work.

It’s not about will, I can stand outside and would like be with, it’s not about positivity or negativity, I could go and certainly I can go because my legs works and it is entirely possible to get in, but if I do then I become so sick of air pollution in the room that I have to get out right away. It has nothing to do with negativity, nor have it anything to do with medicine to take because I have all the medicine for my asthma I need, it’s just not enough. I shows that it actually is not enough to have the will, that it is not enough to want to and just do, because I want to a lot but there is no help in it, the lungs do not care the least what I want, the lungs they do what they want regardless of what I want or would like to  participate. The medicine only helps to keep me healthy as long as I avoid the substances that is not air.

Therefore, it is important that you help so that the air is clean and free from these substances, because then I and all others with the same disability can be everywhere!

I and You only need clean air.

ps This is probably true for all other allergies as well, I guess that after what other allergy sufferers have told me, so do not meet those who are allergic with “- Take your medicine!” or “- I do as I like!” because then you are to make people hurt. And such behavior is seen as very negative by those who are allergic.

~Honesty is not negativity ~

@TodayShow what NOT to do at the #loo – #IndoorAir #Health #AirSafety #Asthma #AirFreshener #TodayShow #Media

This is a story about how ignorant people do their absolute best to mess up the lives of others. When you have read this I hope you know and do better in the future.

 Image of a bathroom.

Screenprint of Today Show headline. “How to clear the air after using the bathroom.”

Responsible for others health

Today I read an article at Today Show and I was horrified to read their advice on how to avoid the embarrassing feeling of “certain air you’ve left behind”.

Today show (and unfortunately other media too) communicates the destruction of your health.

Today Show only gave two good advice in the whole article. As follows:

“First and foremost, reduce odors by flushing the toilet as soon as you can. The quicker the flush, the less the odor. A “courtesy flush” is not only courteous, it’s smart.

Ventilate! Open a window or turn on the exhaust fan. Most bathrooms have exhaust fans above the toilet. Just make sure you’ve turned on the fan and not the heater portion of the fixture. Leave it running even after you leave the bathroom.” Today Show

I would have added make the sit on the toilet as short as possible, the longer you sit the greater the possibility for the odor to spread, and put the lid down before flushing to keep it all in the toilet.

What they say after this is what endanger people’s health and lives.

Then Today Show follows up with saying:

“Unfortunately, toilets don’t come with built-in air fresheners.” Today Show

I am happy every time I enter a WC without built-in air polluters since it in reality pollute the air to the point that I can not even enter the toilet to do what I need. In worse case if I have actually managed to enter before that chemical machine burst out it’s bomb I have to run out when it does. Actually I have to always be aware and check the room before I even enter because such fragrance machines send me to the ER for asthma treatment because the contents coming out of it makes me suffocate due to asthma attacks.

There are worse things than poo odor. Such so called Air Fresheners are actually hazardous chemicals. Open a window or accept that’s the way nature is.

It is way better to clean the WC room fragrance free, and a little more often. In the end it is cleaning that keeps the toilet clean, not fragrance.

Today Show  then follows up with saying even more health damaging tips.

“Fragrant hand lotion: Apply it liberally to your hands then wave your hands in the air. Some people go so far as to squirt a bit of lotion into the commode.” Today Show

This is enough to give allergy and asthma symtoms in a person entering after you.

“Hair spray: The heavier the fragrance, the better when it comes to this emergency air freshener. Again, a puff in the air and one in the toilet works wonders.” Today Show

This is enough to send any asthma sick person entering after you to the ER. NOT recommended.

“Perfume/cologne: If you’re lucky enough to have a small vial of perfume with you, your troubles are over. One sprinkle and odors are gone.” Today Show

This is enough to send any asthma sick person entering after you to the ER. NOT recommended.

“Spray bathroom cleaner” Today Show

This is enough to send any asthma sick person entering after you to the ER. NOT recommended.

“Cleanser” Today Show

This is enough to send any asthma sick person entering after you to the ER. NOT recommended.

“Bleach” Today Show

This is enough to send any asthma sick person entering after you to the ER. NOT recommended.

“White vinegar” and
“Baking soda” Today Show

This is often recommended as a more natural choice but combined in the same cocktail it produces a gas that is irritating the airways in the lungs.

“Liquid hand soap” and
“Shampoo/Conditioner” Today Show

Those go under the same as above-mentioned. This is enough to give allergy and asthma symtoms in a person entering after you. Depending on the grade of severity of the asthma, it can give all from minor issues to send the person in to life threatening asthma attacks.

Are you aware that there are 300 million people having asthma in the world (WHO 2011)? expected to be 400 million people in some years (WHO). In Europe there are 30 million people having asthma (Efanet.org), and in the US 25,5 million people (2010) have asthma  (adults 18.7 million, children 6,8 million, fig 2010).

Figures from 2010 shows that in the US those made 14.2 million visits to the physician office (2010) and 1.8 million emergency visits to the ER (2010), 439.000 hospitalized (2010), 3630 deaths from asthma (2013).

A little dishwashing liquid in water is good for cleaning all surfaces, wc, shower, bath tub, floors, walls, ceiling, doors, including mirrors and windows. About everything.

On top of it a Norwegian test panel with NRK made a test on what killed the most bacteria. They tested many common household sprays, and dishwashing liquid. And guess what won? The dishwashing liquid.

And for men it is better to use lotion for the face and neck after shaving than use aftershave because it is too harsh to the skin, lotion takes care of the skin.

L’oreal Casting Creme Gloss without ammonia – by Annelie Molin

I did not like what I saw in the mirror, with partially colored hair and parts of grey. I like it best when it looks all in the same color. Either brown or all grey. Also I honestly did not have the money to dye it with the hair dresser this month so I bought a box in the grocery shop. I was nervous doing this since I know I usually get problems from hair dye. But I have read that color one wash out – not permanent color – is not as bad as other sorts so I thought I would give it a try.

I bought L’oreal Casting Creme Gloss without ammonia.

image

It actually went fine. I did not feel any strong smell. There is some scent but not as bad as many others. I got no sore sculp and no breathing problems the first times I used it. Lately only just a slight breathing problem, but not as bad I can not use it. And I do not use it every month. So, so far so good. But I will not give it any listing, this is such a product holding so many bad chemicals. If I get more problems from it it will normally grow worse over time.

But I can totally put ammonia on my asthma no-no list. Ammonia was not in this one, I did not get bad breathing problems this time. If I get a reaction to it later on? Well, we will see…

Yes, I do have two asthma sins. Hair dye, and make up. I still want to look nice you know. But I try my best to find replacement products that is asthma and allergy friendly. It would be easier done if more producers started thinking content and scent free products. Hair dye covering grey hairs I have found none.

L’oreal Casting Creme Gloss do hold homone disrupting chemicals according to hormonsjekk.no from the Norwegian Consumer Council: Forbrukerrådet. Visit at Forbrukerradet.no

It is bad they have these hormone disrupting chemicals in their products. This is the last product I still buy, that holds hormone disrupters. I have cleaned out all fragranced products and products holding hormone disrupting chemicals from my cabinet. I wish they stop adding hormone disrupting chemicals to their products.

If I find a even better one I will stop using this one.

The schampo is nice to use in the hair, gentle to the sculp and got no scent. Color of schampo: clear – color free.

Loreal Paris Elnett Satin Hair Spray – Blacklisted

This one is a really nasty piece. It is really impossible to use and also give asthma attacks when someone using it comes near. That is all I can say about it except for it smells horrible too. Loreal Paris Elnett Satin Hair Spray is a really bad asthma bomb. Big thumbs down!

Loreal Paris Elnett Satin Hair Spray – Blacklisted

On the 8 of 10 2012 this article was published from the Norwegian television channel TV2 and the show TV2 Helps You. This show is an investigating show helping consumers. In the article is stated the Loreal Paris Elnett Satin Spray is filled with the highly allergy developing fragrance Evernia Prunastri.

Facts on Evernia Prunastri:

“Oakmoss lichen” Evernia Prunastri This species is harvested commercially in south-central Europe, and then sent to France where it is used in the manufacture of fine perfumes. The lichen acts as a fixative for other scents, and also adds a subtle herbal fragrance of its own. The lichen has a distinct and complex odor and can be described as woody, sharp and slightly sweet. It is used in perfumes and essential oils for aromatherapy. This Evernia Prunastri is known to cause allergy.

Tested: Cutrin Sensitivism Hair spray – Whitelisted

If I had a grey list it would end there. Cutrin Sensitivism Hair spray is absolutely scent free, and the spray is light and feels more like water when breathing it in. It is not sticky to the skin either. Hair spray is one of the hardest to make when it comes to asthma, since asthma is a lung illness and any asthmatic got very sensitive lungs and mucous membrane. First time trying it out I had a tiny little sensation in my lungs when inhaling it, but not so big that it was any big problem. This hair spray is as good as it get for an asthmatic person. I normally get heavy breathing problems from hair spray both sprayed on me and on other people wearing it, but not from this one. I recommend this one with one precausion. For the safety of it: Since all things you breathe in ends up in the lungs, and even this hair spray is made to hold your hair, it contains different stuff, it is “sticky” substance. It is sprayed and therefore aerosol. Asthma attacks can build up over time too, this happend to me after been using this hairspray and inhaling it for some weeks. I did not avoid to inhale it. I had a hugh asthma attack after a long while using it. So for the safety of it try to hold your breath while spraying, your lungs only need fresh air.

But this is not a bad hair spray!

This one still ends up on the white list. This is because this is the only hair spray I can have in my hair during the day without getting sick from the fumes. And it is the only hair spray added in others hair that I do not get sick from the strong fumes of the hair spray during the day. It got no scent. In dry condition after have sprayed it in the hair it do not irritate my lungs. Not the slightest.

Hold your breath while spraying, air out carefully, and enjoy the beautiful hair after.

This is a scent free hair spray. And I wish everyone would use this one instead of any other kind of hair spray, if you must use any at all. It would make any sensitive persons day so much easier. Some friends of mine who are even more sensitive than I am (and I am very sensitive) say they are sensitive to Cutrin Sensitivism even, but they do say Cutrin Sensitivism is way better than any other brand. And therefore they also recommend Cutrin Sensitivism, since it is much better than any other brand for us who get sick from perfumed and chem filled products.

So therefore I want to say:

– Well done Cutrin to have made such a good hair spray one do not immediately choke on!

Real Purity Haarspray – Blacklisted

This is kind of painful for me to have to put this one on the blacklist since it says on the bottle that it is free from alcohol, fragrance, color, and synthetic preservations, and it is stated it only hold natural ingredients. It do have a scent, even though maybe not from perfume. It smells kind of like crops blended with something.

Sadly I had a rather bad asthma reaction to it even though I had taken medicine before I used it. On top of it, it do not work good in the hair. In wet hair it make the hair feel like sticky, dry and wet horse hair, stiff and gluey, and used on dry hair it makes the hair heavy. It is a sticky substance that stick to everything around you including yourself, one get a sensation of getting spray glue sprayed on the skin, and it gave me asthma outbreak. So this product I can not recommend if you got asthma. However if you are not asthmatic and only got contact allergies this maybe is the thing for you. If you only got contact allergies you can try if you think it works in your hair. It did not work for me. Good thing is that since it is all natural ingredients, I can safely throw it in the trash bin without being afraid to harm the environment.

515 chemicals

Beauty… Everyone wants to be beautiful and feel good. But did you know that many women put on 515 chemicals before breakfast? Do you use any products before you are ready for the rest of the day? Then you should read on…

Many women use about 13 products a day. A quick shower, and some lotion is all that is needed to have used very many chemicals on your body in a jiffy.

Showering in Shower cream, shampoo, conditioner, removing hair using a cream or barber foam, and after body lotion, hand lotion, face lotion, deodorant,  doing the hair with some gel, mousse and hairspray, putting on makeup, and then you add the last little thing perfume. Then time for clothes washed in wash agents and fabric softeners with perfume added to them because you want to smell nice. And now you are ready for breakfast. Do you see your self in this?

Before you have even had breakfast you have added more than 515 chemicals to your body and some are even harmful to you and your environment, and even to people around you.

Most products women use contain some kind of perfume, and this is in addition to the perfume you spray on yourself. Even your makeup most likely has perfume in it, along with your lotions, shower cream, shampoo, conditioner, hairspray, gel a.s.o. A perfume contain on an average a cocktail of 250 ingredients, the study found, with some containing as many as 400.

For example: Lipstick contains on average 33 ingredients, body lotion 32, mascara 29, and the purest product tested, hand moisturizer 11.

“The new ‘wonder treatment products’ contain more chemicals to be able to achieve better results, which means that women are more at risk.”

You like musk?

Synthetic musks (by Greenpeace)
“Synthetic musks are man-made fragrance additives used in laundry detergents, air fresheners, hand creams, soaps and perfumes in place of more expensive natural musks from the behind glands of  the musk deer.  They are environmentally persistent chemicals that have become widely distributed through the environment.  Two nitro-musks (musk xylene and musk ketone, or MX and MK) and two polycyclic musks (Galaxolide and Tonalide, or HHCB and AHTN) make up 95% of the European market for synthetic musks.  Emerging evidence suggests that these commonly used musks or their metabolites may be capable of interfering with hormone communication systems in fish, amphibians and mammals and may enhance the effects of exposure to other toxic chemicals.  Although the estrogenic activity of HHCB and AHTN is relatively weak, anti-estrogenic effects have been observed for the same compounds at concentrations more than 100 times lower.”

And what more all those products containing all these chemicals evaporate fumes from them with scent and else, plus the skin sucks up the chemicals and transport it via your blood stream to your organs. Taking a blood test one can count the chemicals in your blood and determine if you have a high amount of chemicals in your blood. Chemicals in your beauty products / deodorant have in research been found in for example breast cancer. Also the perfume and scents in the products are spread around you and affects also those around you. The feel good from your beauty products may just as well be a plague for others. You think you smell nice and that others like you, but very many get ill from your fumes and therefore you become a problem.

Not only are you risking your own health using those products, you can get eczema, allergies, asthma, sensitivities, reproduction problems and even cancer. But you also make others that already got those sensitivity illnesses sick from your use.

Take a look in your cabinet, and throw all way and replace it with non-perfumed products, also see to that you choose a product that got no Paraben in it. Paraben is chemical used in most beauty products a.s as a preservative to prevent the product from getting damaged. But Parabens is one of the most dangerous ingredients and is found in cancer.

There may be reason for people to be concerned about the findings.

“Their detection in human breast tumours is of concern since parabens have been shown to be able to mimic the action of the female hormone oestrogen, Oestrogen can drive the growth of human breast tumours. It would therefore seem especially prudent to consider whether parabens should continue to be used in such a wide range of cosmetics applied to the breast area including deodorants.”

Greenpeace tested 36 brands of perfume and concluded with that they hold chemicals that is hazardous to the reproduction ability with men, Many perfumes also contain a lot of  Phthalates, and EU has concluded with that they are bad for the reproduction. According to Greenpeace a high concentration of the substances can change the DNA of the sperm. Phthalates are used in plastics, in perfumes and as denaturing agent in the rubbing alcohol used in cosmetics and grooming products.

Whale vommit, or Ambergris, is vommit from whales that is a common ingredient in perfume. Ambergris is also used for scenting cigarettes. It is a solid, waxy, flammable substance of a dull grey or blackish color produced in the digestive system of sperm whales. Natural Whale vommit is now mostly replaced with a chemical substitute, natural whale vommit is still used in some perfume brands.

Phthalate esters (by Greenpeace) – “used as softeners in flexible PVC products, including floors, wallpapers, furnishings, prints on clothing and toys, as well as ingredients in cosmetics and perfumes.  They are almost universal contaminants in both the indoor and outdoor environment.  Two commonly used phthalates, namely di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) are listed as reproductive toxins in the EU.  Concerns for other phthalates in common use (including di-isononyl and di-isodecyl phthalate, or DINP and DIDP) centre on adverse impacts on the liver and kidneys.  Together, these concerns resulted in a recently proposed EU ban on the use of three phthalates (DEHP, DBP, BBP) in all products intended for children; the use of the three other phthalates (DINP, DIDP and DNOP) will only be prohibited in toys and childcare items for children under 3 years than can be put in the mouth.  However, they will still be allowed for use in all other products.”

EU is working with a law to reduce the use of harmful ingredients.

Alkylphenols (nonylphenol, octylphenol and their derivatives) (by Greenpeace) – “primarily used as non-ionic surfactants in industrial detergents, though also used in textile and leather finishing treatments, water based paints and as components of some personal care products.  Alkylphenols are persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic to marine life.  Nonylphenol and other alkylphenols have the ability to mimic natural oestrogen hormones.  Recent research has also raised concerns that exposure to alklyphenol compounds could cause direct damage to DNA and to sperm structure and function in mammals.”

What do you got in your cabinet? If you let me, I suggest you replace it with something organic, and non-scented. Personally I am on the lookout for cleaner cosmetic products here where I live.
