Tested: Jane Iredale Lash Conditioner – Whitelisted

I talked with Fedora Minerals Makeup representative about their mascara I find a little thin when adding it to the lashes. They suggested I should use a lash conditioner the first layer, and then add mascara, this will thicken the lashes and make them appear better they said. And during this talk on Facebook they were kind enough to promise to send me one for free so I could try it. Really nice of them. :-)

By accident they sent me Jane Iredale instead of Fedora. Same manufacturer. This little accident gave me something new to write about. :-)

A lash conditioner is like a primer you add to the lashes before adding mascara. It is supposed to protect the lashes and thicken and stiffen them before adding mascara. It make the first layer of mascara better visible faster. One can also wear it as a care product at night for conditioning the lashes while sleeping, Fedora Minerals told me.

It came by post

About the test
This is a pure inhale test of the products. I test the products on my self. This is a real life asthma product suitability test done at home in real life settings. I am my own guinea pig. Whitelisted products should be safe for you to use, while blacklisted are not safe. But as with all sensitivities some are more sensitive than others, always try new products with care. Make the first time trying it gently, if you got a skin condition try it on a small area, and washing agents on a hidden area or a cloth you can afford to waste.

My lungs are very picky when it comes to hygiene products, beauty products, hair products, washing and cleaning products and so on. Products not meeting the standards of no asthma reaction are blacklisted.

Please, buy such items whitelisted as gifts for friends and family. They are designed and made for a better personal health and are more environmentally beneficial than the fragranced ones. Use them yourself, care about your fellow-man. Do not make other people sick with your fragrance presence.

Lipstick
It got a moisturizer coor. It is a rich color, and I would suggest to use a lipstick brush to applicate it. Many colors to choose from.

Mascara
A while back I tried La Roche-Posay Respectissime perfume free mascara. It works good. I got no sore eyes, and no asthma problems from it. Only bommer is it runs when you get warm or you wear a fat face cream. This one went ok.

In Norway you find La Roche Posay makeup at the pharmacy (Vitus Apotek) If you are somewhere else than Norway write to La Roche Posay and ask them to introduce it where you live.

However a German friend told me La Roche Posay makeup did not make it very well in a Eco test in www.oekotest.de Things like this is up to you to take in consideration.

According to politiken.dk La Roche Posay uses hormone disrupting Chemicals in their Products.

How to clean your makeup brushes fragrance free

First of all choose a scent free organic makeup for your makeup. And when you use it clean the brushes once in a while.

How to choose makeup brushes. Rounded thick brushes is to prefer. For powder makeup choose brushes of natural  hair, and for cream and foundation either synthetic or natural will do.

How to clean Your makeup brushes fragrance free

Squirt a small amount of fragrance free schampo in a mug filled with warm water and, softly swirl your makeup brushes in the soapy water to loosen the oils and makeup. Dump out the water and repeat until the water runs clean.

If you have a particularly soiled brush, put a small amount of fragrance free shampoo in your palm and clean the brush by hand.

Put the handles of the brushes on a ledge or on top of a folded towel so that the water will drain down and out of the bristles. Let them air dry overnight and fluff in the morning. Use a blow dryer to dry, if needed.

Go Fragrance free – Awareness

If we say care about others. Go Fragrance Free! Are you one of those who say – Can’t I wash myself, my clothes, use deodorant, style my hair, clean my home, wash up, shave, do my makeup, lotion and so on any more? Must I smell of sweat?

The answer is – No, you must not.

All of these products are fragrance free. Actually from my own cabinet. All one need.

fragrance-free-products-for-you-your-home

Barber foam, make up, hair styling, soap, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, lotions, lip balm, lip stick, face wash, mace up remover wipes, make up remover, toothpaste, sun lotion, sun block, antiseptic wipes, stain remover, detergents, fabric softener, wool and silk detergents, floor cleaning, universal cleaning spray for all surfaces, dishwashing liquid, dishwasher tablets. A little dishwashing liquid in water is good for cleaning all surfaces, wc, shower, bath tub, floors, walls, ceiling, doors, including mirrors and windows. About everything.

On top of it a Norwegian test panel with NRK made a test on what killed the most bacteria. They tested many common household sprays, and dishwashing liquid. And guess what won? The dishwashing liquid.

And for men it is better to use lotion for the face and neck after shaving than use aftershave because it is too harsh to the skin, lotion takes care of the skin.

Keep clean, Go Fragrance Free!

Thank you for your time and interest. Please, share this post to increase people’s awareness!

Fedora Lipgloss – Blacklisted

I like the Fedora make up line, fragrance free and nice colors, however Fedora Lipgloss is fragranced. I find it strange that a make up line designed to be hypoallergenic, allergy, skin and sensitive friendly add fragrance to their lipgloss. It is blacklisted.

image

And lipgloss you wear right under your nose, right under your airways, not very lung friendly.

What more is that when using it and drinking from a cup or a mug it is not easy to wash it away, not even using washing up liquid and a brush. I wonder what it does to the stomach and ingestion? I was drinking coffee from a cup with a plastic lid, tried to wash up several times but the cup and lid is still stained with some glittery gue.

Tested: Fedora makeup – Whitelisted

Fedora is made from natural materials, it is scent free. I will show you some of the products available and maybe add more later as I buy them.

image

Here is all you need.

image

wpid-IMAG2152.jpg

With Fedora you get a nice little beauty box with a good mirror inside. It is very good. But I would like og the powder and rouge pieces to be bigger, and that there were bigger boxes that could hold three rouge, three all powder only, one box for 3 blush only.

In today’s great boxes 1 powder, 1 blush and 3 eye shadows fit in the box and is held there by magnets. (Lip stick is from La Roche Posay also perfume free with a balm function.)

This is what I chose, there are many more colors to choose.

Mascara
Water resistant Lengthening Mascara

This mascara got a wonderful brush! Wow! Perfect for lashes. :-) This mascara however give away rather little mascara to the brush and I feel it takes too long building the layers on eye lashes. But when finished resault is ok. It do not run much either. But as it the mascara is made today I think it is best used on the eyebrows. It is a remarkable good eyebrow mascara. It looks all natural! I wish they could market this mascara as a eyebrow mascara, and make another richer one with same brush for lashes as well. That would have been best. Cool they have choosen a tube so one can press the very last out of it. :-)

A little update 24 April 2013: I got a tip from Fedora to use a Lash Conditioner under the mascara, this should make it easier to apply, they said. They where kind enough to send me a Lash Conditioner from Jane Iredale for free to try it. And it worked.

It is important to notice that water resistant is not the same as waterproof. Water resistant mean it resist water to a degree.

In Norway you find Fedora make-up at the pharmacy. If they do not have it available, do ask them to order for it and to sell it.

Only product from Fedora I would put on the blacklist is Fedora Lipgloss and Fedora Facial Moisture Spray. That is a pitty since the rest of the products hold such a high standard.

EU regulation on hair dye safety

In English

In 2010, the EU decided that 40 of the most allergenic hair dye substances must be labeled with a warning label. Today according to EU rules there must be a danger sign and a warning on the hair color which contains extremely allergenic substances. After 1 November 2012, it is prohibited to sell hair dye in stores that do not have this warning.

Hair color with particular allergy risk should not be on the store shelves – unless they warn against allergy.

Products marked with this warning should not be used by persons under 16.

Perfume free products in perfume environment – by Annelie Molin

(Scroll down for English)

Parfymefrie varer i parfymerier

In English

It is almost impossible to find fragrance free makeup. And paradoxically enough, the fragrance-free makeup found it is sold in perfumeries. This means that if you are sensitive and become sick from perfume you must enter a perfume shop to buy a perfume free make up product, and those g who are sick from perfume is not likely to enter such a store. This mean they are exclueded from buying it.

I know I can go online and buy in various online stores, but it’s not the point. It’s ridiculous that such fragrance-free products are sold in perfumeries where tried and sprayed perfume all day. It is not able to go in and buy the fragrance-free products without getting sick. It is a very bad treatment and plan. Is fragrance-free products only to those who can tolerate perfume?

I should not have to go online to buy, I should be able to go to the store and buy like everyone else. I like to look at the make-up products before I buy them, when you see the item, you can test the consistency and color better and do not buy like wearing a blind patch. Same problem one encounters in some clothing stores, for example. but not exclusively CUBUS, which sells clothing and perfume to see in the same store, and the whole cashiers area is fenced by perfumes, scented products and perfumes testing. Shopping in such stores is equated with getting sick.

There are too stupid to shut customers off from products they want and need. This is not just a question of access but also about equality. – Being able to choose for themselves. Being able taking the cozy shopping trip just as everyone else can, and being able to go into the store, try and feel the product and get the product directly in the hand and drop to wait 1-2 weeks before the product is delivered.

515 chemicals

Beauty… Everyone wants to be beautiful and feel good. But did you know that many women put on 515 chemicals before breakfast? Do you use any products before you are ready for the rest of the day? Then you should read on…

Many women use about 13 products a day. A quick shower, and some lotion is all that is needed to have used very many chemicals on your body in a jiffy.

Showering in Shower cream, shampoo, conditioner, removing hair using a cream or barber foam, and after body lotion, hand lotion, face lotion, deodorant,  doing the hair with some gel, mousse and hairspray, putting on makeup, and then you add the last little thing perfume. Then time for clothes washed in wash agents and fabric softeners with perfume added to them because you want to smell nice. And now you are ready for breakfast. Do you see your self in this?

Before you have even had breakfast you have added more than 515 chemicals to your body and some are even harmful to you and your environment, and even to people around you.

Most products women use contain some kind of perfume, and this is in addition to the perfume you spray on yourself. Even your makeup most likely has perfume in it, along with your lotions, shower cream, shampoo, conditioner, hairspray, gel a.s.o. A perfume contain on an average a cocktail of 250 ingredients, the study found, with some containing as many as 400.

For example: Lipstick contains on average 33 ingredients, body lotion 32, mascara 29, and the purest product tested, hand moisturizer 11.

“The new ‘wonder treatment products’ contain more chemicals to be able to achieve better results, which means that women are more at risk.”

You like musk?

Synthetic musks (by Greenpeace)
“Synthetic musks are man-made fragrance additives used in laundry detergents, air fresheners, hand creams, soaps and perfumes in place of more expensive natural musks from the behind glands of  the musk deer.  They are environmentally persistent chemicals that have become widely distributed through the environment.  Two nitro-musks (musk xylene and musk ketone, or MX and MK) and two polycyclic musks (Galaxolide and Tonalide, or HHCB and AHTN) make up 95% of the European market for synthetic musks.  Emerging evidence suggests that these commonly used musks or their metabolites may be capable of interfering with hormone communication systems in fish, amphibians and mammals and may enhance the effects of exposure to other toxic chemicals.  Although the estrogenic activity of HHCB and AHTN is relatively weak, anti-estrogenic effects have been observed for the same compounds at concentrations more than 100 times lower.”

And what more all those products containing all these chemicals evaporate fumes from them with scent and else, plus the skin sucks up the chemicals and transport it via your blood stream to your organs. Taking a blood test one can count the chemicals in your blood and determine if you have a high amount of chemicals in your blood. Chemicals in your beauty products / deodorant have in research been found in for example breast cancer. Also the perfume and scents in the products are spread around you and affects also those around you. The feel good from your beauty products may just as well be a plague for others. You think you smell nice and that others like you, but very many get ill from your fumes and therefore you become a problem.

Not only are you risking your own health using those products, you can get eczema, allergies, asthma, sensitivities, reproduction problems and even cancer. But you also make others that already got those sensitivity illnesses sick from your use.

Take a look in your cabinet, and throw all way and replace it with non-perfumed products, also see to that you choose a product that got no Paraben in it. Paraben is chemical used in most beauty products a.s as a preservative to prevent the product from getting damaged. But Parabens is one of the most dangerous ingredients and is found in cancer.

There may be reason for people to be concerned about the findings.

“Their detection in human breast tumours is of concern since parabens have been shown to be able to mimic the action of the female hormone oestrogen, Oestrogen can drive the growth of human breast tumours. It would therefore seem especially prudent to consider whether parabens should continue to be used in such a wide range of cosmetics applied to the breast area including deodorants.”

Greenpeace tested 36 brands of perfume and concluded with that they hold chemicals that is hazardous to the reproduction ability with men, Many perfumes also contain a lot of  Phthalates, and EU has concluded with that they are bad for the reproduction. According to Greenpeace a high concentration of the substances can change the DNA of the sperm. Phthalates are used in plastics, in perfumes and as denaturing agent in the rubbing alcohol used in cosmetics and grooming products.

Whale vommit, or Ambergris, is vommit from whales that is a common ingredient in perfume. Ambergris is also used for scenting cigarettes. It is a solid, waxy, flammable substance of a dull grey or blackish color produced in the digestive system of sperm whales. Natural Whale vommit is now mostly replaced with a chemical substitute, natural whale vommit is still used in some perfume brands.

Phthalate esters (by Greenpeace) – “used as softeners in flexible PVC products, including floors, wallpapers, furnishings, prints on clothing and toys, as well as ingredients in cosmetics and perfumes.  They are almost universal contaminants in both the indoor and outdoor environment.  Two commonly used phthalates, namely di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) are listed as reproductive toxins in the EU.  Concerns for other phthalates in common use (including di-isononyl and di-isodecyl phthalate, or DINP and DIDP) centre on adverse impacts on the liver and kidneys.  Together, these concerns resulted in a recently proposed EU ban on the use of three phthalates (DEHP, DBP, BBP) in all products intended for children; the use of the three other phthalates (DINP, DIDP and DNOP) will only be prohibited in toys and childcare items for children under 3 years than can be put in the mouth.  However, they will still be allowed for use in all other products.”

EU is working with a law to reduce the use of harmful ingredients.

Alkylphenols (nonylphenol, octylphenol and their derivatives) (by Greenpeace) – “primarily used as non-ionic surfactants in industrial detergents, though also used in textile and leather finishing treatments, water based paints and as components of some personal care products.  Alkylphenols are persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic to marine life.  Nonylphenol and other alkylphenols have the ability to mimic natural oestrogen hormones.  Recent research has also raised concerns that exposure to alklyphenol compounds could cause direct damage to DNA and to sperm structure and function in mammals.”

What do you got in your cabinet? If you let me, I suggest you replace it with something organic, and non-scented. Personally I am on the lookout for cleaner cosmetic products here where I live.
