@TodayShow what NOT to do at the #loo – #IndoorAir #Health #AirSafety #Asthma #AirFreshener #TodayShow #Media

This is a story about how ignorant people do their absolute best to mess up the lives of others. When you have read this I hope you know and do better in the future.

 Image of a bathroom.

Screenprint of Today Show headline. “How to clear the air after using the bathroom.”

Responsible for others health

Today I read an article at Today Show and I was horrified to read their advice on how to avoid the embarrassing feeling of “certain air you’ve left behind”.

Today show (and unfortunately other media too) communicates the destruction of your health.

Today Show only gave two good advice in the whole article. As follows:

“First and foremost, reduce odors by flushing the toilet as soon as you can. The quicker the flush, the less the odor. A “courtesy flush” is not only courteous, it’s smart.

Ventilate! Open a window or turn on the exhaust fan. Most bathrooms have exhaust fans above the toilet. Just make sure you’ve turned on the fan and not the heater portion of the fixture. Leave it running even after you leave the bathroom.” Today Show

I would have added make the sit on the toilet as short as possible, the longer you sit the greater the possibility for the odor to spread, and put the lid down before flushing to keep it all in the toilet.

What they say after this is what endanger people’s health and lives.

Then Today Show follows up with saying:

“Unfortunately, toilets don’t come with built-in air fresheners.” Today Show

I am happy every time I enter a WC without built-in air polluters since it in reality pollute the air to the point that I can not even enter the toilet to do what I need. In worse case if I have actually managed to enter before that chemical machine burst out it’s bomb I have to run out when it does. Actually I have to always be aware and check the room before I even enter because such fragrance machines send me to the ER for asthma treatment because the contents coming out of it makes me suffocate due to asthma attacks.

There are worse things than poo odor. Such so called Air Fresheners are actually hazardous chemicals. Open a window or accept that’s the way nature is.

It is way better to clean the WC room fragrance free, and a little more often. In the end it is cleaning that keeps the toilet clean, not fragrance.

Today Show  then follows up with saying even more health damaging tips.

“Fragrant hand lotion: Apply it liberally to your hands then wave your hands in the air. Some people go so far as to squirt a bit of lotion into the commode.” Today Show

This is enough to give allergy and asthma symtoms in a person entering after you.

“Hair spray: The heavier the fragrance, the better when it comes to this emergency air freshener. Again, a puff in the air and one in the toilet works wonders.” Today Show

This is enough to send any asthma sick person entering after you to the ER. NOT recommended.

“Perfume/cologne: If you’re lucky enough to have a small vial of perfume with you, your troubles are over. One sprinkle and odors are gone.” Today Show

This is enough to send any asthma sick person entering after you to the ER. NOT recommended.

“Spray bathroom cleaner” Today Show

This is enough to send any asthma sick person entering after you to the ER. NOT recommended.

“Cleanser” Today Show

This is enough to send any asthma sick person entering after you to the ER. NOT recommended.

“Bleach” Today Show

This is enough to send any asthma sick person entering after you to the ER. NOT recommended.

“White vinegar” and
“Baking soda” Today Show

This is often recommended as a more natural choice but combined in the same cocktail it produces a gas that is irritating the airways in the lungs.

“Liquid hand soap” and
“Shampoo/Conditioner” Today Show

Those go under the same as above-mentioned. This is enough to give allergy and asthma symtoms in a person entering after you. Depending on the grade of severity of the asthma, it can give all from minor issues to send the person in to life threatening asthma attacks.

Today Show Are you out of your mind? is all that comes in to my mind when I see these advices. People doing this can send anyone having asthma or other lung disease or sensitivity to the ER with life threatening conditions.

You are such a big news media and you have a great responsibility for what news you share and the impact it has. Last time I checked your post was shared 196 times. A post shared 196 times by people having about 300 people in their friends list is 58.800 possible views.

Are you aware that there are 300 million people having asthma in the world (WHO 2011)? expected to be 400 million people in some years (WHO). In Europe there are 30 million people having asthma (Efanet.org), and in the US 25,5 million people (2010) have asthma  (adults 18.7 million, children 6,8 million, fig 2010).

Figures from 2010 shows that in the US those made 14.2 million visits to the physician office (2010) and 1.8 million emergency visits to the ER (2010), 439.000 hospitalized (2010), 3630 deaths from asthma (2013).

Do you now realize the severity in what you have done?

Imagine the damage you have done to all the people in the world having asthma.

Polluting of air increase the health risk of those having asthma. But it do not stop there, the same goes for those allergic (can be life threatening), other lung diseases (can be life threatening, other kinds of sensitivity like for example hyperactivity, hypersensitivity to chemicals and so on.

By sharing such stupid tips you spread and increase the endagering of people’s health.

Did you know this about fragrance? Perfume has become the new passive smoke. It’s become as common with perfumed products today as smoking was before,  the spreading in the air violates the rights of those who get sick from it.

World Health Organization (WHO): Global surveillance, prevention and control of CHRONIC RESPIRATORY DISEASES.

Ban indoors scenting of air

From the article:

“Fragrances are an obstacle for people who are allergic / sensitive to perfume.

It causes difficulty staying in various public indoor environments because of other people’s perfume / fragrance. Examples (not to be limited to) of such environments, shops, workplaces, schools, health care, cultural life and in public transport.

Swedish Asthma and Allergy Association want to pay attention to scent hypersensitivity it is a big problem for so many.

The union now requires scenting in indoor public areas is prohibited.

Today there are companies dedicated to the scenting stores, shopping centers and hotels – environments where our members can not enter and therefore not be allowed in.

Fragrance hypersensitivity, also called sensory hyperreactivity / SHR (or in English MCS), is relatively common among adults – slightly more than six percent meet the criteria for medical diagnosis.

Far more, about 33 percent say themselves that they have some kind of odor hypersensitivity, read reaction to for example fragrance chemicals off gassing to the air.

There is no medical treatment that cures odor hypersensitivity, but those affected are obliged to avoid smells and are therefore dependent on ambient considerations.

Fragrance Hypersensitivity be due to a “over stimulation” in the sensory nervous system. Common symptoms include respiratory problems (coughing, shortness of breath, hoarseness, phlegm), irritation of the eyes, nose, or throat or more general symptoms (headache, dizziness, fatigue, sweating).

Symptoms may remind you of asthma or allergy, but has other causes. Symptoms may persist for several days and lead to sick leave even if you are only exposed to perfume a short while. ” svt.se

Basically it’s already prohibited in Norway when it violate against The Discrimination and Accessibility Act.

E-mail from the Equality and Discrimination Ombudsman LDO to Alena Jula (published with permission by Alena Jula):

“Perfume Allergy and other types environmental inhibitions are regarded as a form of disability protected Discrimination and Accessibility Act.
The freedom to function in society should be equal for all. Also measures for preventing allergies, including perfume-free products is covered by the act. This is particularly important in public and private enterprises where people of different reasons need to go and be there / reside. With discrimination is meant direct and indirect discrimination.” The Equality and Anti-discrimination ombudsman LDO, Norway

Prohibit perfuming / fragrance setting of indoor air in Norway, Sweden, yes throughout Europe.

Reacting with illness in scented and fragrance added indoor air it also applies to asthma and allergies, so then you have to count higher numbers than stated in the article. I have asthma and can not tolerate fragrancing of indoor air like mentioned in the article, it is not only chemically intolerant who can not tolerate it. It is no fun having to flee a toilet when one are in need because it is mounted a scent machine on the wall, or having to go out of a store or other locality because them have scented indoor air. Do they not want customers?

“Asthma and allergies can be debilitating and can cause loss of life.” Norwegian Labour Inspectorate 2009

It is not just these and us struggling with it who supports a ban.

Asthma and allergies can be debilitating and can cause loss of life span due to disability in lung health. It is recognized as a disability by the UN, WHO and Equality and Anti-Discrimination Ombud (LDO). People with asthma and allergies that have hyperreactive airways (not to be confused with hyperactive) agains fragrance / scent / perfume in the environment are not adequately safeguarded in society as regards availability because that human lives has a so called alleged right to use things that make others sick, this is despite the fact that people with asthma and allergies have a legal protection of the Act prohibiting discrimination on grounds of disability (Discrimination and Accessibility Act), the law on the environment and the protection of clean air etcetera: Regulations on environmental health, the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the World Health Organization (WHO) Global surveillance, prevention and control of chronic RESPIRATORY DISEASE.

People violates the law on the wanting for fashion, increasing sales, getting customers to stay longer in stores, etc., and at the same time so do one exclude thousands of people each year from participating and use the same places. It provides increased illness, increased sick absence, increased costs for both society and the private individual concerned, it gives personal suffering, there are even people who are receiving disability benefits because those can not be in society, work, and do all the things that others may when the air is polluted with fragrances. Here there is much to save for all, both for the individual and society. By prohibiting the addition of perfumes and fragrance so called fragrance marketing and else fragrancing of air, read perfume substances in indoor air are people healthier, and community saving large sums of money when those sensitive can move in society, can work, and there are fewer sick leaves, and less on disabilitiy benefits.

Why continue to authorize the use and selling of products that damage health and costing society money? What is most important accessibility, health and the environment or the right superficial glamour?

Princess Märtha Louise of Norway sensitive to fragrance – aftonbladet.se

Hun sier hun bruker aldri parfyme.

Princess Märtha Louise of Norway is highly sensitive against perfume

As a child discovered Princess Martha Louise that she was ill when she came in contact with perfumes. In an article in Aftonbladet.se she tells of how she was nauseous when she smelled on her mother’s perfume Chanel no. 5. In the life she lived as a public person, it was she who should take the initiative to contact the public meetings and parties, sensitivity meant that she was shy and withdrawn, she was ashamed to be different.

To be subjected to perfume on others has been a challenge all her life, and still is she says.

She tried for years to pretend that she was “normal” and struggled with getting sick from perfumes, to pretend that she was normal meant exposing herself and endure perfumes and thus become sick and had to pretend that she was healthy.

When she became an adult she got a diagnosis and she’s better because she knows that she is not weird. She says she never uses perfume, Princess Märta Louise is perfume free.

To take the bus is like russian roulette – Kicki Djärv – vk.se

(Scroll down for English)

When the health do not tolerate what is in the air

“Bus travel is a gamble, Kiki Bold must always be prepared to get off. Theatre is futile and before each water aerobics session she keeps fingers crossed that no overdosed hairspray. Kiki has asthma and allergy and perfume makes her sick. We’ll meet at home in Kickis apartment in Ålidhem and I really have thought me this morning. The most cans and bottles I have in my bathroom contains perfumes of any kind; shampoo, soap, lotion, deodorant and hair spray. I try to make myself as “fragrance free” as possible, but it does not really. For Kiki reacts to rinse agent that remain in my shirt. Although it affects breathing, I know that it will pass. The difficulty is that it is built on. It may be fine for a while, but becomes the several doses I become sick in the end. I do not understand why there has to be perfume in just about everything. Detergent for example, I can not even go into the laundry room and my husband have to run three empty machines to remove all detergent and fabric softener residue. I can ride the bus, but stepping it on something that has a lot of perfume on themselves, I have to get off. Bio runs decently if we sit in the back of the chairs where there is little distance to the next line, but the theater is not to my great sorrow. I have tried many times. For some reason, “spraying” the people a little extra when they should be at the theater. I can not even stand in the foyer. I can not breathe.” vk.se

Very many are sick from your perfume use, not only from what you spray on you or put on your face and armpits, but also of the products you use that contain perfume. Show respect to those who are struggling, use perfume free products.

Addiction or brainwash?

Addiction or brainwash?

I just read The Addictive Power of Toxic Perfumes and Cologne where the writer tells about an episode where a woman sprayed perfume in a shop despite he told her his wife who was there get sick from it, and he talks about the woman being selfish and addictive to fragrance.

“Several years ago my wife and I were visiting a town in the mountains of western Maine. We were looking at a few books on the rack in the town’s historic pharmacy. Just across the aisle was a perfume display with a large row of testers. As we were looking at the books, another couple walked by us and I heard the woman suddenly exclaim, “Oh! There’s my favorite perfume – I think I will have some.” Since she was standing right next to my wife who has Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), my wife instantly responded, “Please don’t spray that, I am highly allergic and it will make me sick.” The woman looked at my wife and then looked at the bottle. A second later the bottle was in her hand and she gave herself a strong dose of perfume and then walked in front of my wife leaving a cloud of fumes behind her. To say the least, I was angry. How could someone be so selfish?” Health Impact News

Further they say:

“My wife has been struggling to avoid being exposed to perfume, cologne, and the fragrances of laundry products and air fresheners for over fifteen years. Because of her Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), my wife and I have asked many people to please not use perfume or cologne when they know that they will be spending time with us. Whether it is in our home, in a church meeting, or other type of gathering, the answer we receive to such requests is almost always “NO.” People usually get quite offended when such a request is made. Sometimes people will say they will honor the request, but then they often forget to keep their promise. Sometimes we have made gentle reminders to encourage them to help us, but it is amazingly difficult for perfume addicted people to stop using perfume or cologne when they start their day or to avoid reapplying perfume later in the day. Even greater hostility may be evoked when a request is made to please consider using unscented laundry detergent or to stop using dryer sheets, which are some of the most toxic fragrance products. Even if we tell people that our suggestions will make them healthier and save money, they still have no interest in hearing what we have to say about the toxic qualities of fragrance products.

It is quite fascinating to watch the power of addiction. People may have great compassion for homeless cats and dogs, may be very supportive of all kinds of community charity projects, and may be loving parents and grandparents, however, when it comes to the effect of fragrance products on the health of other people, they seem to have very little compassion. They might give you the shirt off their back, but don’t get between them and their perfume or dryer sheets. It really is no different from any other addiction. Cigarettes, alcohol, and sugar all exercise the same power to control behavior and to repel anyone who might dare to interfere with their being satisfied by their drug of choice, which in this case is fragrance.A person who is addicted, whether it is to alcohol, drugs, food, pornography, or perfume, will not allow anyone else’s need to interfere with their need to keep using a certain substance. This may not be conscious, since most perfume users probably don’t suspect that they are addicted. In their mind, they just love perfume and cologne, and they can’t imagine how other people could dislike what they love or even be made sick by what makes them feel good.” Health Impact News

And

“In addition to the physically addictive aspects of fragrances, they are also emotionally addictive. This is due to the olfactory pathway in the brain through which sensations of smell enter the subconscious part of the brain.” Health Impact News

“The marketing of perfumes, cologne, aftershave, and other scented body care products is based on sex and the power to control others. In other words, people are subtly promised that they will be more sexually attractive or sexually desirable. It is further suggested that people can be invincible and they can get whatever they want — that is — if they wear a certain fragrance. Health Impact News

About the pheromones and the promises of sex. We are like the animals and we are attracted to the right person through among other things the natural scent of the other person, both men and women. But if I were you I would refrain from both fragrance and essential oils (more about that in the video below) and only shower in fragrance free personal hygiene products and use a fragrance free deodorant. Humans are constructed like the animals, we produce pheromones that is a boost regarded to sex, and hiding it will have negative consequences. (source Dr Akilah El)

Fresh-Air-For-All-fragrance-illness

I urge you to read  The Addictive Power of Toxic Perfumes and Cologne before you read on.

I do not think for a minute it’s addictive to use perfume and I do not believe that it is the reason why the woman sprayed perfume defiance that she was told not to do so due to his wife’s sensitivity. It is more about personality and this woman simply did not care. It’s her way to meet others, she got no knowledge of it and she’s short-minded, selfish and cares only of her.

A person having asthma reacts to allergens and irritants in the air as low as 0,02 PPM.

Fresh-Air-For-All-and-no-obstruction

I used perfumes before I was asthmatic in 2007, not as extensively but it was in all my products, in everything from laundry products, cleaning to personal care products, deodorant, makeup and styling, and a slight spray on the neck. It was not so I had to spray me every day because I “had to have my fix” of scent, I used it sometimes and let it be for long periods of time. I did not get withdrawal because I did not get my spray of scent or scented products. I used what I was brought up to use, and what was available to style myself after what was fashionable at the time. I did not ask questions to if this was ok, or if it did hurt anyone since no one told me it was bad, hold bad content or in any way the society told me it was bad. But back then I would probably have had a hard time understanding how it could affect someone and in what way it could be harmful since I had not lived it myself. The old saying “- You need to walk a mile in someone’s shoes to fully understand…” is very true. It’s more that people are trained that fragrance is as it should be, that is what is ok and accepted and that everyone accepts it WHATEVER HAPPENS! It is a form of brainwashing of and by society that everything that does not smell anything or smells bad is to be dirty. It is common in advertisement to be told “The smell of clean…” when talking about fragrance washing and cleaning, and “The fragrance of a house is part of the decor.” when talking about interior design. It’s brainwashing, aka training of the whole society that things must smell fragrance to be clean and bling-bling. But fresh clean air what does it smell? Clean water what does it smell? I smell NOTHING! Fresh and clean air and water does not smell flowers before you add a flower or fragrance to it. If you stand on a mountain top and there are no flowers around it won’t smell other than fresh air, and it smell nothing, just air!

That people use fragrance is because they are trained to do so by society, history, marketing and attitudes, they enjoy it almost as some like the taste of chocolate or a good dinner, and enjoying something one gladly uses it again. If it is hurting you, you will not try it again.

In the article it says

“Fragrances are Emotionally Addictive” Health Impact News

Maybe it can be in a way addictive that people feel pleasure when they feel a scent they like, just as they feel pleasure when the eat things they like, but it will not make them addictive in that sense of the word. Take for example what people eat. People allergic to food also get the same treatment as us who are allergic, asthmatic and have other lung diseases, or MCS and get sick from fragrance use. People invite to dinner and then forget, do not care, or it is cultural reasons to why the menu at the dinner is not altered so the sensitive person can take part and eat the dinner without getting sick. One good example is Chistmas dinner, when people expect one kind of food and it makes them into selfish bastards that do not care about health and they do not care to change the content of the food so a family member or a friend do not get sick from the dinner. These people are not addictive to Christmas dinner, they are just following the tradition and they are not willing to change it to suit someones health because then it is not traditional Christmas food anymore. Using other ingredients changes the taste of the food and therefore they think the Christmas feel is damaged. Ergo they skip caring instead. (read Merry Christmas shut out)

It is the same way with fragrance. They use it because they like the feeling they get from it, and they make it their own personal mark, a bit of themselves, the fragrance becomes a part of them, and when you complaint that someone should not smell they take it personal because they feel you complaint about how they smell. They are uneducated about the problematic issues with fragrances, and they are brainwashed it is ok all over the society. How can anyone complaint about something that is fully accepted in society? they are in their believes.

Ergo they use it anyway.

Fresh-Air-For-All-shut-out-lonely

For us the “flavors it hurts” with perfume, just like the food hurts the food allergic, for the others non sensitive it’s a good. They can not for a second understand that some might be sick from it, and therefore they fail to accept that others may become ill, and therefore they do not believe them in it is for real and important. They also have a superstition on medication that; “Take a pill and everything will be all right!” It have been said before many times and as long as society have that way of thinking it will never be alright since medicine for asthma and allergy is only constructed to take away peaks of illness not to make you immune to the things your body can not tolerate.  Only way to not get sick is to refrain from being exposed.

Fresh-Air-For-All-MedicineMyth

It was not before I got sick in asthma myself that I fully understood what harm it can do to the health. Now I do not use fragrance products at all, I had no withdrawal and not problem stop using it since I now got the inside knowledge and understanding of what harm it does. Actually, when I stopped using it I felt better than I have ever done before. It was not only the asthma and the breathing issues that went away. All those chemicals is a burden to the body. The body is not constructed to handle all this burden, it is constructed to breathe, eat, feel, and do its needs. I realized that all those chemicals made a strain to my body, I could literally feel when the body stopped having to work to handle all the stuff I put my body through using all the fragrance products. I felt freed. My only regret is that why had no one told me about this before?

Fresh-Air-For-All-the-fragrance-fre-please

People, you must only take our word for it and listen. You do not want to get this illness that is asthma, allergy and sensitivity to understand what it is about. It is actually pretty awful to have, I promise you that it s nothing you want, not being able to breathe without being at risk of getting sick from others use of fragrance.

Fresh-Air-For-All-fragrance-free-everyone-can-join

You just have to respect what you are told about it. You just have to be fragrance free, and actually it is not being dirty even if you are told so. Fresh air does not smell of perfume, it smell of nothing, and it is lovely. Haven’t you ever stood outside a spring, summer’s, fall or a winter’s day and inhaled the fresh air and felt it is lovely? That is exactly what we want to do. Inhale fresh air without getting sick.

Sensory Hyperreactivity SHR – What is?

What is SHR?

The term sensory hyperreactivity (SHR) has only been used in the past ten years and involves sensitivity to scents and chemicals with symptoms localized mainly to the eyes and respiratory tract.

SHR is easy to confuse with asthma and allergies which can lead to inaccurate information and medication.

Approximately one-third of the adult population experience some form of discomfort triggered by scents and chemicals.

Approximately six percent of the adult population is estimated to have diagnosed SHR and 70 percent of them are women.

Research shows that the use of scented and fragrance added substances steadily increasing.

#Evaluation of #IndoorAir

“No evaluation of indoor air quality and its impact on health can be complete without considering the effects of the widespread of fragrance in multiple products used on a daily basis in homes, workspaces, and other public places. The ubiquitous exposure to poorly studied fragrance chemicals has resulted in escalating voluntary and involuntary exposures to unknown substances which contrary to public assumption, have not been evaluated by regulatory agencies for safety to the general public, children, the elderly, and other sensitive populations. Exposure starts before birth from fragrance chemicals in mothers’ bodies (1) and continues with ingestion of mother’s milk. (2) Products for infants and children are scented often with materials known to cause allergies (3) and persist in body tissues. Children and infants are also exposed to every scented product used in the household. An infant held close is breathing in fragrance from clothes washed in highly scented detergents and laundry products, perfumes and colognes, shampoo, and other scented products used by the caregiver transferring to the child’s skin, hair, and clothes. Exposure continues throughout life. Users of scented products are often not aware of the continued presence of the products they use and are rarely aware of the intensity of the scents.” Continue reading

Is the air for everyone?

Norway “According to the Norwegian public reports,” NOU 2005: 8 of equality and accessibility. Legal protection against discrimination on grounds of disability. Defined disability as “Fuksjonshemming occurs when there is a gap between the individual’s abilities and design or function in surroundings / environment / buildings.” “

Sensitivity to the environment is protected by law. When triggered sensitivity to pollution in the environment an individual become sick. The ability to be in the environment is therefore limited.

Masced against scent – Katarina Persson and Ritva Pyykkönen – Haparandabladet

Read in Haparandabladet:

“HAPARANDA SWEDEN: The many scents that are all around us – and that we put on ourselves, becomes the moment pure terror for people with hidden disability fragrance hypersensitivity.

– Being oversensitive is not visible – but we hope to increase knowledge and awareness of others, says Katarina Persson and Ritva Pyykkönen, both teachers in Haparanda, to Haparandabladet.

A visit to the store can suddenly end up with swollen throat, itchy eyes flowing – and in the worst cases, difficulty breathing. Now, at Christmas, it is not easier. – It is horrible and absolutely crazy that there be perfume in almost all products.”

Developed MCS / SHR – Ingvor Näsmyr – vf.se

Article from vf.se 2013-05-30

“Fragrance Sensitivity Over overturned life as she knew it

Freshly washed sheets. An expensive perfume. Cozy scented candles.
For Ingvor Näsmyr, just like most others, belonged to such a life’s joys. But last year she was diagnosed with sensory hyperreactivity – and everything was upside down.
– A trip to town and I will be lying in two days, she says.

For Ingvor Näsmyr it is deadly serious.

Since last year, when the problems escalated and she finally got her diagnosis, she has been put on all their habits and start thinking three steps ahead.

– Just to clean up the house took forever. One such thing as plastic things that one can not think spreading any particular smell, I can be completely floored by.

On the kitchen table is a little flower not spread any scent, otherwise the plastic flowers in the windows. The new clothes she buys, she washed a few times with chemical-free, odorless detergent before she can use them. All creams, soaps and other personal care products have been carefully selected to work.

And that’s just at home.

As soon Ingvor open the front door, she risks figuratively being knocked out by fragrance hitting her.

– There are so many things you never thought of before. Everything from a fire debris a block away to the washing and waxing the car. Riding a bus is a gamble. Standing in line at the store, I dare not any longer. You become so limited, almost isolated. But sometimes I am not able to be at home and the I go into town anyway.

The consequence? Almost certainly, she is lying in two days, with strong flu aches and extreme tiredness in the body.

Where then does the problem come from? Scientists are not completely agree, but the prevailing theory is that prolonged exposure to chemicals and strong odors increases the risk. Ingrid Näsmyr has worked in health care, and the final years at Ikea as a cleaner.

– It is clear that there are a lot of smells there. Furniture with flame repellants, customers that have perfume. It have not been able to work there, I have been full-time sick leave for six months now. At times it has been very hard, joy is the source of my lovely granddaughter Norah. Without her, I do not know how it would go.

What she wants is that ordinary people became aware of the disease. Ignorance is great, many are skeptical and do not understand the seriousness. Even at the health center staff may have fragrances that trigger reactions, says Ingvor.

– It would be so nice to just one day be able to walk around normally, without fear , says Ingvor Näsmyr”

MCS’s have less blood flow to the brain

MCS NEWS

Like for patients having fibromyalgia, MCS patients  have altered Cerebral blood flow.

“A lower baseline flow of blood to the brain is common. When these patients are exposed to perfumes and petrochemicals, they develop further decreases in blood flow to the brain.

MCS is an acquired and progressive neurological disease induced by exposure to chemical and fragrance products.

MCS is often misinterpreted as or compared to asthma and allergies, which generally cause only temporary inconvenience and can be treated and reversed with antihistamines. In most cases, neither asthma nor allergies impacts the ability to live a relatively normal life.

However, people with MCS suffer progressive and cumulative harm, cognitive impairment, brain changes, and end organ damage with exposure to even small amounts of the seemingly innocuous chemical and fragrance substances in the air.

Those with chronic symptoms show long-term reduced blood flow to the brain and reduced ability of the brain to take up a tracer substance. This indicates a neurotoxic metabolic abnormality consistent with toxic environmental exposures to pesticides and other chemicals.”

Push for a More Fragrance-Free Environment – Marie Schmidt – latimes.com

Testimony of Marie Schmidt of Arcadia latimes.com

Qoute

“I start sneezing and my nose starts running the minute I smell them,” says Schmidt, whose respiratory system goes on red alert at the least whiff of scented products.

“It’s sort of like cigarette smoking,” she complains. “They are invading my privacy.”

Whether she realizes it or not, Schmidt is part of what could be the next big nationwide battle that pits individual rights against public health concerns: the push for fragrance-free environments.

“Ten years from now it will be politically incorrect to wear perfumes in public,” predicts Paul Imperiale, disability coordinator for the mayor’s office in San Francisco. That city’s fragrance-free plan, drafted in 1990, was never enacted.

With Americans now using perhaps a dozen scented personal-care products each day, fragrance foes’ basic argument is this: your right to wear these products ends where my chemical sensitivities begin.

Beyond perfume, activists for fragrance-free environments are targeting restaurant bathrooms with those pungent deodorizers, office buildings that use pesticides and astringent cleaning products, and the neighborhood mall, whose host of synthetic odors assault the nostrils, especially around the holidays.

“We are putting so much into our environment that people are getting sick. I don’t think it’s a matter of personal rights now, I think it’s a matter of everyone’s health,” says Joan Ripple, a consultant to state Sen. Milton Marks, who chaired a Senate Judiciary subcommittee on the rights of the disabled.”

“In public policy terms, this could be defined as an issue of handicapped access, just like having a wheelchair ramp into a church or public building,” Brown says. “To have services that aren’t fragrance-free is to deny services to a group of people whose population is growing every day.”

End Qoute

I should say I actually is about personal rights. The personal right to not have to get ill from others vanity, egoism and shallowness.

And you do not need to have MCS to suffer from other Peoples habits, you only need astma and allergy to get ill from it.

I think the fewer would serve nuts to a person allergic and sensitive to nuts, so why do you force Your fragrance on us who get ill from it? You invade and hurt Our Health. Stop it now!

MCS and knowledge

If you mention MCS many say they are nuts and it is all in their head. What is more true is that those who say it have no Clue and the reality is that those People saying this is way out of line.

Today I read this article in the Danish newspaper Politiken.dk

MCS

A flower, diesel, which passes, or a napkin, that your daughter used once, where she got a hug from one perfumed lady.

More should there not that send those having MCS with symptoms of primary headache, dizziness, breathing problems and chronic fatigue – if you are striken by suffering MCS, which in Danish called, “parfyme og kemikalieoverfølsomhed.

“We do not know exactly why and how it affects. Some patients have been exposed to a powerful chemicals exposure at work or have developed symptoms at some point, where they have felt themselves under very stressful situations over time, other patients recounts, that they have been  sensitive for Chemicals in the air since childhood.”, says Sine Skovbjerg, there is Research Leader at Videncenter for Duft- og Kemikalieoverfølsomhed.

“But we know from a questioning form that  17,000 Danes have so severe symptoms, that it affects their lives and their work”, says Sine Skovbjerg.

The illness can affect anyone that is subjected to stong smells and scents, but can also affect People that have never been subjected to it., concludes medical director Søren Vesterhauge at Privathospitalet Hamlet.

“Generally 30-40 percent of population is specially tender over strong scents”, medical director Søren Vesterhauge, which was the first Danish physician that acknowledge fragrance and kemikalieoverfølsomhed (MCS) as a disease.

MCS stands for Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, and was introduced in the Medical literature in the United States in 1950’s. Some People got symptoms when they were subjected to gasses from pesticides, wax and rubber. In 1987 the illness got the name MCS, and in 2002 became acknowledged and by the Danish Environment Ministry, that such a disorder exists. However not yet classified With an illness code.

It is very wide and different what patient can not tolerate, and the extent to how much of smell and scnet and content of them affect them. Joint for them is that hypersensitive affect both their private and social, and their professional lives.

“It’s almost Impossible to get work, for whom want to employ a person that demand and need a scent free environment?”, asks Leader of Danish MCS association, Susanne Hemdorff.

Also in the private lives of those having MCS the illness have enormous consequences. Some must say goodbye to family or friends and neighbors, who is harmed by that person can not tolerate their fragrance. Life has to be turned on the head and everything accommodated to the illness, and Susanne Hemdorff know of several people who have taken their lives on reason of their isolation.

“Even at a Hospital one can experience the professionally personnel taking offence, because you  can not stand the smell, even though for Health reasons”, she says.

Nerves or immunity

MCS goes under a group af disorders, one in Medical world Call  ‘diffuse’. Basic meaning, one can see that people have it badly and have a lot of symptoms, which Doctors can not explain the or treat.

1 July 2012 MCS got its own diagnostic number and for the first time propriety. It was a long fight for patient holders.

“At the doctor they often were boarded with a cold shoulder and with a message, you have suffered, are you sure, that there is no hysteria?”, says Søren Vesterhauge.

By psychiatry has set MCS as a part af a major symptom complex, the functional disorders. Attempt of them to the process under a form of therapy. Without the large success or holding.

“MCS is for me a physical sickness, and over 500 patient, as I have met the last 20 years, seemed mentally normal. Although of course under stress, because none has believed them “, says Medical Director Søren Vesterhauge.

Today there are no treatment for MCS. At Danish Videncenter for Duft- og Kemikalieoverfølsomhed (MCS) attempt of researchers to find if  among other therapies,  mindfulness-based cognitive therapy helps? It is not published, but the Research Points at according to Skovbjerg that patient at least benefit from being able to better live with their symptoms.

“The therapy do not cure them, but it help them to better being able to live with their illness and symptoms and what it brings With it.”, says Skovbjerg.

The latest research also show that one can measure physical differences on MCS-Patient and people Without MCS.

»MCS patient central brain looks to react more strongly to pain, although their point of feeling pain do not seem to be different or lower than others. This we can measure. Also we have measured differences in their immune systems’, says Skovbjerg, which put weight on, that we do not yet know what these differenses mean clinically.

Center closes

Although Videncenter for Duft- og Kemikalieoverfølsomhed is the only place in Denmark where research is don on MCS the Parliament sanctioned in July that license holders do not prolong and therefore Closes  Videncenter for Duft- og Kemikalieoverfølsomhed Down by the end of this year.

“We are being failed as patients. It is disastrous for us, it widely, that the knowledge the Centre has built up for us is lost”, says Susanne Hemdorff from MCS Association, who have now started  a petition against the closure.

Please help!

Since I have asthma against the same stuff those having MCS get ill from I can totally relate to their problem. It is horrible getting ill from Things spread in the air, and if you can not get any help from the Medical side it is even worse. Everyone has to Breathe!

I have signed the petition. Please help by signing you too! Imagine if it was you or someone you love who got sick this way and had to live their lives like this. The only thing that can help those having MCS is reasearch to find out what to do about it, awareness and People caring. Please sign the petition.

Introduce and state perfume policys in all workplaces – Lisa Billö

Interview in SVT Debatt:

Make and introduce policies for perfumes in all workplaces

“PERFUME FREE – Chemical intolerance is a hidden disability that affects up to one in three humans. But for those who can not tolerate such fragrances is difficult to ask other people to “adapt” – and many of my friends have opted out of friendship for the benefit of their perfumes. By abstaining perfumes at work and at school, we can reduce sick leave for all, writes Lisa Billö.

Becoming sick of perfume chemicals is a rapidly growing health problem. Whole 10-30 percent of the population is affected by some form of sensitivity to chemical agents, and more than three per cent are so severely injured that they greatly restricted in their daily lives.

Obvious things like grocery shopping in a business can mean long illness for me and others who are suffering from MCS, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity – or chemical intolerance, as it is also called. This means that you get sick of a low dose of chemicals, a handicap that makes it not free to reside in the community, among other things because of other people’s perfumes.

I can not sit on a bus with other people who use scented products, go to the movies, theater, restaurant, seek treatment or go to private parties and events.

Asking other people to “adapt” itself is hard. Many of my friends have opted out of our friendship in favor of their perfumes. My children are getting sick every day in school because of friends ‘and teachers’ perfumed products and fabric softeners. This means that they miss a lot of teaching. Once they are there, they have the same opportunity to benefit from the instruction as other children, because of the symptoms they get.

Because it is a hidden disability they are also met by questioning from the principal and staff.

In many of our members, have often ruined economy as a result of sickness, and even loss of service. In many cases it could have been avoided by understanding colleagues and surroundings. Most are doing well in a healthy environment and are then fully or partially working.

Living with MCS greatly affect an individual’s ability to school, work and livelihood, but also leads many times to the great social isolation.

Perfume contains 95-100 percent of synthetic chemicals, which means that even people who are not chemically intolerant or allergic adversely affected. Children are particularly vulnerable. Headache, nausea, difficulty concentrating, and fatigue are common symptoms.

As with tobacco smoking affected the environment, whether they want to or not, so-called passive perfumery. By abstaining perfumes in the workplace can not only avoid unnecessary sick leave but also reduce absenteeism and for all. Fragrances affect the environment even on the bus, in the store, school and other public places.

Fragrances can be found in deodorants, shampoos, hair styling products, shaving products, skin creams, detergents, fabric softeners and cleaning Products and such fragranced products. To all products are as good fragrance-free options.

Besides chemicals in perfumes can also tobacco smoke, fabric softener, mold, emissions from building materials, inks, chemicals in electronic appliances, furniture and textiles, candles and car exhaust trigger symptoms. Common symptoms of MCS can be dizziness, nausea, brain fog, aches in muscles and joints, mucus in the throat, hoarseness, cough, nasal congestion, chest pain, palpitations, rash, fever, mood swings and depression.

MCS Sweden, the National Association for mold and chemicals damaged work for not more people will suffer and for those already injured will be staying in society on an equal basis with others.

Therefore we seek a perfume policy in all workplaces and schools, where employees are encouraged to use fragrance-free products.”

Lisa Billö, Founder MCS Sweden

My point

Since I have asthma I can only agree with Lisa and all MCS affected that fragrance stinks.

Perfume-2013 is chemicals. Although it smells good so it’s chemicals. In perfume, we find among other synthetic musk (is on the EU blacklist), parabens (endocrine disruptors), toluene, formaldehyde (what you embalm dead with), benzol, methylchlorid, benzyl chloride, methyl ethyl ketone, methylene chloride, toluene and phthalates, etc.

The Environmental Health Association in Quebec, Canada: information at www.aseq-ehaw.ca:
“For some chemicals in perfumes can have serious health effects. Babies and children are most vulnerable as people who is suffering from chemical intoleranse Such as Environmental sensitivites and Chemical Sensitivities, and people recovering from cancer and other illnesses. “…” Perfumes are Considered to be the most consentrated form of fragrance. Fragrance … can be extracted from plants, flowers, and animals. Today … 80-95 percent of fragrance materials are synthetic and are derived from petroleum. … Some of the chemicals found in fragrances are: aldehydes, benzyl acetate, toluene, ethanol, acetone, benzene derivatives, formaldehyde, limonene, methylene chloride, methyl ethyl ketone, benzyl chloride and many others known to cause cancer, birth defects, infertility, nervous system damage, allergy symptoms, headaches, difficulty breathing, eye, nose and throut irritation and other injuries. … The brain is overpriced impacted by fragrances containing neurotoxic compounds. ”

The Sunday Times http://www.timesonline.co.uk tells us about scientists thathave found Cancer Causing chemicals in known perfume brands.
“SCIENTISTS have found high levels of a chemical blamed for Causing infertility in some of the best-known perfumes and cosmetics. Chanel No. 5, Christian Dior’s Poison, Eternity from Calvin Klein and Trésor by Lancôme, were among 34 toiletries found by a Swedish study to containers di-ethylhexyl Phthalate (DEHP) or other phthalates. ”

At Rodale http://www.rodale.com we can read
“The new research detected That the labels of popular perfumes do list harmful fragrance chemicals linked to sperm damage, hormone disruption which is linked to some cancers, thyroid disease, obesity, diabetes, and other serious health problems, reproductive toxicity, and allergy problems. The study was released on the heels of the President’s Cancer Panel report, Which Suggests environmental factors like hormone-disrupting chemicals in consumer products, plastics, and pesticides used on our food could be causing many more cases of cancer than initially believed. The … Cancer Panel report recommends That pregnant women and couples planning to’ve become pregnant avoid exposure to hormone-disrupting chemicals due to cancer concerns. These chemicals That May play a role in cancer were found in many of the fragrances Analyzed for this study. … “Secondhand scents Also included are a big concern. One person using a fragranced product can cause health problems for many others “second page:” Just because your favorite fragrance was not on the list does not mean it’s safe. In fact, harmful fragrance chemicals are used in thou sands of products and are Not Listed on the label. It seems like you shouldhave the right to know how These seemingly innocent perfumes and colognes are Affecting your health. But unfortunately, manufacturers do not have to list warnings or even the actual ingredients used in fragrance blends, on the label. And the problem isn’ta limited to perfumes and body sprays. We are blasted with harmful synthetic fragrances every day in the form of scented cleaners, hair sprays and dyes, air fresheners, candles, shampoos, soaps, perfumes, and body sprays. Research is finding thatmany of These scented products interfere with our hormones, Which Regulate how our bodily systems function. “One of the coalition members for this research was the Breast Cancer Fund. Read the whole story: http://www.rodale.com/perfume-ingredients

Perfume also contains chemicals that is suspected be the cause of cancer.

See list of IFRA https://anneliemolin.wordpress.com/2013/03/02/what-is-in-fragrance-the-content-of-perfume/

Very many of these chemicals is also found in tobacco smoke and some also in brake fluid.

For those who have MCS goes on the contents of that smell, more than the smell. This is also true for us who have asthma.

NEWS! Scented shops are dangerous for employees and customers health

NYHETER!

Parfymen inneholder allergenen citronellol.

Økning i ‘duftfeller’

Tips Arbeidstilsynet

NEWS! Scented shops are dangerous for employees and customers health

Shops are increasingly using perfume to lure customers. Unions follows the case of Abercrombie & Fitch with interest.

A job in a shop or plenty of visits to certain shops could give staff and customers allergy and breathing difficulties.

Authorities, experts and organizations, fear this because the use of the so-called scent marketing has increased in the last three years.

The Danish Working Environment Authority will not comment on specific cases, but chief Anne Therese Schultz-Petersen says that Labour Inspection Authority has started working with this problem.

“We have been aware of the case of scent marketing for some time and focus on it. We respond especially if there are allergens, which obviously is not good for the employees to be in, “she says, citing that there may be allergenic substances in perfumes, spraying out in stores.

“Overall, it is unnecessary exposure to workers when using perfume with such substances,” said Anne Therese Schultz-Petersen.

Many fragrances can cause allergies The U.S. clothing chain Abercrombie & Fitch is known for its extensive use of perfume in stores worldwide as Politiken.dk described on Tuesday, the Danish Labour Inspection Authority the last year trying to get the fashion chain to protect employees from the large quantities of perfume used in the stores. The perfume contains the allergen citronellol.

The shop workers union movement follows the the case of Abercrombie & Fitch
“Abercrombie & Fitch is the first company I’ve heard of that has gotten a injunction from Labour Inspection Authority about designer scent workplace exposure. We will follow up on it, once the case is settled,” said safety consultant in HK Trade Birte Haugaard. She gets more and more inquiries from members about the use of perfume in the workplace.

It’s a great working environment problem that our members should not be exposed to. It is also a problem for customers, but they may after all not to go in there,” she says.

Jeanne Duus Johansen, who heads the Centre for Allergy, warns that the many scents can cause allergies.

“Basically you can develop allergies if you have a daily contact with perfume containing allergenic substances. Many people also experience other symptoms when exposed to fragrances through the air, for example. discomfort and nausea. If you have asthma, you can also react in the airways due to very strong smell,” she says.

Increase in ‘scent traps’ According to the report ‘Growth through Experiences 2011’ there has been a large increase in the use of scent marketing.

In 2008, said 34 per cent of Danish companies that they used scents and music in their marketing. In 2011 the figure had risen to 47 percent – and 75 percent of the companies that they maybe will use it in three to five years.

“We are not very happy that we are led into the here scent traps. Lise Nørgaard, Asthma and Allergy Denmark”

This problem is known and recognized by Asthma and Allergy Denmark, which recently have been contacted by a number of citizens who complain about the use of perfume. The association is concerned about the development:

“We are not very happy that we are led into the here scent traps. We find that there is a large group of approximately 1 million Danes with asthma or hay fever, which is likely to have asthma attacks. And then we have a small group who are deprived of their social lives because they have scent sensitivity,” said communications Lise Nørgaard, who is surprised that there is no regulation in this area.

Heavy scents can cause headaches
Consumer Council goes a step further and calls for a ban on the use of perfume in stores for the sake of customers with asthma and allergies.

At the employers’ organization Danish Chamber of Commerce invites the shops to use scents wisely.

“Heavy scents can cause headaches and make employees sick. Even if you have a particular concept with scents, you have to take it into consideration.”

I think scent marketing should be prohibited for health reasons. If everyone starts to use it in shops and other places, how shall we who have asthma and sensitivity go shopping, stay in hotels, work etc? This is a nightmare! We all need to breathe, and what we need to breathe is fresh air unpolluted!

A community diagnosis of symptoms – by MD Aage Hegge Hansen

A community diagnosis of symptoms

MD Aage Hegge Hansen “As the first Norwegian doctor publicly (including on NRK) declared battle against perfume pollution, I have via the web come in contact with patients all over the world.

My contacts have strengthened me in theory that it is the fragrance of hygiene products that are hazardous to health, hygiene is not in itself, as some here at home has believed.

When the fourth of Norwegian adolescents with asthma, it is in reality a national disaster. This gives asthma including increased risk of fatal COPD later in life. But modern asthma therapy is so effective that patient and doctor can easily forget disease is so dangerous degree and that the best treatment is still trying to find the reasons for getting rid of asthma. Unfortunately, few people seem to be interested in it.

It is not many years ago since smokers could freely wide in all arenas. People with sensitive lungs could protest as much as they wanted, the smoke was a legal product that was lit where you found it for good. This is no longer, the health argument has trumped all other arguments, and now tobacco is rolled back using the law. It will thus soon become marginalized as a public health problem.

Now the perfume used is the main challenge, something most people are able to recognize at the individual level. If person A on the job stinks so strongly of perfume, that person B gets sick from it and are not able to be there anymore – it is then that B must quit his job, or is it A, which must begin to meet up with odor-free clothes? I would think that B’s claim of fresh air should be considered more legitimate than A’s desire to use perfume, in unlimited quantity, anywhere and anytime.

Perfume emissions primarily from clothing, hair and skin of the user, but also sits in the house and car interiors, which one gets secondary degassing up to months and years. The gases are causing a number of “conditions” as Sick Building Syndrome (SBS), Building Related Illness (BRI) and Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS). Primary and secondary perfume degassing has become so dominant  cause of disease, and gives such a typical view on the matter, depending on the degree of exposure and time exposed, it may be appropriate to define a separate syndrome; Perfume Related Illness (PRI).

Regardless, perfume and tobacco smoke two sides of the same contamination issue, and perfume use is so extensive now in 2011, that the whole body of society may be said to be sick and perfume damaged, in addition to that they are already and still tobacco damaged. The difference is that while damages to health du to tobacco is under consideration, with the Tobacco Act as medicine, no perfume injuries is taken up for discussion even in the responsible departments and organisations.
With the honorable exception of Asthma and Allergy Association, which at the congress in 2010 adopted a policy of smoke-and Fragrance-free public space. It is the only sensible from a public health perspective.” MD Aage Hegge Hansen, Norway

Nut, fur and fragrance

People tend to treat different sensitvities differently. It seams Ok to be gentle, understanding and caring when it comes to food allergy, fur allergy and other such allergies, but when you start to talk fragrance people get  a strange look on their face. It is like when someone start to talk smoke bans with smokers, they do not seam to think perfume can be a cause of illness and also they stand up stating their right to use it. As I use to say to a friend who smokes that is very anti to alcohol, but think that it should be ok to smoke. He thinks it do not harm anyone, not as bad as alcohol does anyway. I say

” – If I sit beside you having a beer with my dinner when we eat together, it does not make you ill from it. But if you smoke beside me it makes me and others there ill.”

He still protests and claim it is a violation on his freedom and right to choose for himself. Many smokers are like this.

Then we have those who aka LOVE FRAGRANCE! If you tell them their fragrance is hurtful to your and other sensitive people’s health and that they should not use it, and if it comes to turms on a fragrance ban and protecting peoples health they turn red on you. They also feel it is their right to use fragrance, and they get offended and get sad, feeling like the smokers that it is a violation on their freedom and right to choose for themselves.

What about the freedom and right for those sensitive to be and stay healthy?

The big wonder is that it seam like it is all Ok! by people to care about those who are sensitive to food, animals, dust, grass and so on, all of what does not go on them personal. As long as they do not have to make a offering to prevent another person from getting sick it is alright to be allergic and sensitive, and then they are more than willing to help and care.

My story – Eve – detoxthebodymcs.com

From Eve’s site:

Eve’s story

“The physical aspects are frightening and debilitating and the social consequences are sad, infuriating and humiliating. So many people just assume you are a complainer or a hypochondriac, when you are just trying to stay alive. I learned to suffer in silence(and further damaged my body) because people would be offended if I suggested something they used was toxic. After a while, I realized that I would just have to piss people off and let them think or say what they want.

I just want to give you a little background: I was always a healthy conscious, actively exercising and well-eating, so I was sensitive to chemicals, and maybe a few years ago, perfumes started bothering me. All of a sudden, in my gym and my workout class, people’s perfumes and fabric softener started bothering me, making me feel so sick, so  that I couldn’t stand to stay in the room anymore. I was left with a headache, disorientation and gasping for breath. Over a short period of time, wherever I went, the chemicals everywhere just bothered me—gave me headaches, made me grouchy, made me spacey, make me tired, hurt my lungs, and just made me feel awful.

If I went to the park and the chlorine from the fountain would hurt my lungs. If I was on the sidewalk, I could smell people’s perfume through the windows. Those little pine tree air fresheners made it impossible to ride in a taxi. I had an asthma attack working out on a polluted day and that was the beginning of my lungs being damaged. Once I was sickened by some  ‘aroma therapy’ (“organic” from China ) so that I could hardly even manage to put a sentence together.”

Congratulations all with MCS

Congratulations all my readers having MCS. From 1 of July 2012 MCS will have its own health diagnose code in the Danish Health Care and Social Security System. A little step forward for you all.

From Dagens Medicin:

“Characteristic of severe cases is that patients describe general symptoms, which often limit them in daily life. Often they describe reactions to multiple chemical substances, such as. perfumed care – and cleaning products, evaporation from recent publications and new furniture and exhaust.

Diagnosis code for fragrance – Chemical Sensitivity will be labeled ‘symptoms related to scents and chemicals’ (DR688A1) and placed under the main category DR688A ‘Medical unexplained symptoms’ in Healthcare Classification System (SKS).

Diagnosis is subject to the following five criteria:

  1. Patients related symptoms commonly occurring scents and chemicals (eg. Evaporation from scented products, fresh print and new home furnishings).
  2. Symptoms from the central nervous system is mandatory, for example. headache, dizziness, difficulty concentrating and fatigue. Also occurs frequently symptoms from other organ systems, such as. respiratory tract disorders, musculoskeletal system, or the gastrointestinal tract.
  3. Symptoms improve or disappear when exposure is removed.
  4. The condition is chronic (> 6 months).
  5. Symptoms accompanied by significant lifestyle – or functional impairments, for example. loss of business, work and social network.”

Human Canaries and Friendship

Even asthma

Even for asthma sensitivity for small dozes are there. A person with asthma reacts on dozes 0,02 ppm. So I you have just a little on, it may be to much. Best is to go fragrance free. Then you do not bather anyone.

Ichigo Ichie

In addition to many of the health issues I’ve talked about in this blog, one of the major conditions that has increasingly affected my daily life is my extreme sensitivity to fragrances and certain chemicals.  People with sensitivities like me, and others diagnosed with “multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS)” are referred to as “canaries.”  We are human canaries.  The name “canary” comes from a past practice of miners who would take the birds into the mines with them as an animal sentinel, to provide advanced warning of danger.  Canaries are more sensitive to toxic gases than humans, so if the bird stopped singing, got sick, or died, the miners would know they needed to escape the mine or use protective gear before they were affected.

Low levels of fragrances and chemicals that most people probably wouldn’t notice, will make me very sick, so sick that I could be…

What Multiple Chemical Sensitivity is not

Learn what MCS is not. Those who have MCS is normal people with a physical disorder.

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity

MCS is not having an increased sense of smell. That’s hyperosmia.

MCS is not finding the smell of perfume or other chemicals unbearable. That’s probably the olfactory equivalent of being sensitive to noise or light.

MCS is not getting anxious or panicking when you smell a chemical or believe you are being exposed to one. That’s anxiety or phobia.

Sensitivites like MCS acknowledged as work injury in Sweden

Since I have asthma and it is close to what those having MCS are experiencing having problems with cases of MCS and their issues intrests me a lot. Today I read a really important winning for MCS’s in Sweden. A man with the help of the Workers Unions lawyer won against the Swedish Social Security department called Försäkringskassan.

Congratulations all with MCS in Sweden because this is a winning for you all! A case won in court is a legal statement for all of you who may come in the same situation.

The case:
Qoute
(2012-11-22) LO-TCO Workers Rights Protection has won a case in the Kammarrätten court in Gothenburg where the issue was on appeal after a petrol drenching can be approved as a work injury and diagnoses TILT (chemical sensitivity) and MCS (multiple chemical sensitivity) can be work-related injury.

The goal is about a truck driver who has been awash in gasoline in connection with the accident. The man is a member of the Transport Workers’ Union. He was fully working for three years after the accident and then became completely incapacitated with severe disease symptoms. There was no medical documentation to substantiate complaints over three years.

An oral hearing was held in administrative law where witnesses substantiated member tale of trouble over the years until he became sick. Legal protection is invoked three expert opinions of specialists in occupational and environmental medicine. Insurance relied on their part, three specialists in occupational and environmental medicine to support that connection does not exist.

The Administrative Court found after the hearing that although the medical mechanisms of current symptoms are not fully scientifically understood so it seems more likely that the member illness and discomfort is more likely to be caused by the accident accident than not. The appeal was approved an occupational injury.

Försäkringskassan tried to overrule and appeal in Gothenburg to higher court, but them agreed with former ruling. These symptoms diagnoses have probably not been previously approved as a work-related injury.

Attorneys in the case was union lawyer Ulf Lejonklou.
