130 000 got COPD at work in Norway

(Scroll Down for English)

Dust, gases, vapors, fumes and particles from chemicals and other substances

Many jobs are filled with dangerous particles that can cause COPD. Around one third of the nearly 400,000 people affected by the severe lung disease COPD in Norway, has been sick with things they are exposed to at work – so-called occupational COPD. Today (2013) are over 130,000 Norwegians affected by so-called occupational COPD, based on figures from the Hordaland Health Study.

Not only is this scale far greater than scientists thought – the prevalence of COPD also increases much faster than expected.

“COPD has always been explained by smoking, and it is still the main cause of COPD. But we are now seeing more and more branches of the workplace has loads of great importance for the development of COPD – and a much more significant than we have long believed . “Refvem, pulmonary specialist and former head of the National Kolsråd.

There is now a need for a much broader awareness of occupational COPD.

Occupations which has long been known that COPD is a problem is melting, metals, mining and tunneling, asphalt industry, hairdresser, baker, cleaner and farmer. Harmful gases are a risk to the lungs.

Labour Inspectorate discovers annually between 2,000 and 3,000 new cases of work-related COPD. While about 200 people die each year of the same. There are four to five times more than those who die in accidents.

We are designed to breathe air, not chemicals! Think before you add fragrance to the air and add Chemicals that gasses off and is spread in the air.

The scent mania makes ill personell

Airport smelled too good – staff sick

They had installed designer fragrance in the Tax Free area at Landvetter airport in December 2012 and it became too strong. Several of the staff got sick. Now the case is reported to the Swedish Work Environment Authority.

They installed four scent machines inside the duty-free shop. The machines went on maximum power and a risk assessment was not made.

After several of the staff had problems with dry eyes, nasal congestion, and nosebleeds hit Swedish Labour Inspection Authority alarm. Two of them were forced to take asthma medications.

Now, the employer must arrange health track and also arrange for odor source either be removed or the ventilation is enhanced.

I must say it is madness to install such scent puffing machines. It makes the area unavailable to those who already have asthma, allergy and sensitivity, and it also makes those not sensitive become ill. If someone have ones developed asthma in adult age it is for life. Those People here are maybe forced to change occupation now after the employer have gone over the limit of what their bodies can stand.

I myself can not enter a perfume store at all. And even less a store using fragrance marketing. A store with both perfume and scent marketing together is like hell ten times.

We are designed to Breathe air not fragrance.
