Parfymeallergi – din godlukt skader andre – Elin Wiese Engh – Nyhetsettermiddag NRK

Lytte her:

https://radio.nrk.no/serie/nyhetsettermiddag/NPUB51017416/01-09-2016#t=45m45s

Movie tip: Perfume allergy in Billion tv-series

Film tips: Parfyme allergi i Billion tv-serie

Movie tip: Perfume allergy in Billion tv-series

Billion is a television series on HBO that’s about trading, law and justice and the pursuit of those who do not follow the law. In season 1 episode 3 (about 27:52 into the program) before and after a meeting with clients reacts Rhoades to that a colleague has cologne on himself:

Rhoades: “-Are you wearing cologne?”

Spiros: “-Yea”

Rhoades: “-Jesus Christ!”

Rhoades: “-You know, my fucking eyes are watering here,  how many pints of that shitty toilet water do you splash on yourself every morning Spiros? Do You think it is may be going to help you get som tail? Here is a tip: It’s not!”

I’m glad it’s being recorded because it is a social problem that people take matters into their own hands spreading alcohols and perfume chemicals in the air tormenting others. Far from all appreciate being exposed to perfume.

Is it a good series? It is a bit superficial in its appearance, the action is mainly for showing, it is about to play out each other and win. What is not good is all the sexist comments, it is very much playing on women in a degrading manner. They should get a fine for every degrading comment.

Push for a More Fragrance-Free Environment – Marie Schmidt – latimes.com

Testimony of Marie Schmidt of Arcadia latimes.com

Qoute

“I start sneezing and my nose starts running the minute I smell them,” says Schmidt, whose respiratory system goes on red alert at the least whiff of scented products.

“It’s sort of like cigarette smoking,” she complains. “They are invading my privacy.”

Whether she realizes it or not, Schmidt is part of what could be the next big nationwide battle that pits individual rights against public health concerns: the push for fragrance-free environments.

“Ten years from now it will be politically incorrect to wear perfumes in public,” predicts Paul Imperiale, disability coordinator for the mayor’s office in San Francisco. That city’s fragrance-free plan, drafted in 1990, was never enacted.

With Americans now using perhaps a dozen scented personal-care products each day, fragrance foes’ basic argument is this: your right to wear these products ends where my chemical sensitivities begin.

Beyond perfume, activists for fragrance-free environments are targeting restaurant bathrooms with those pungent deodorizers, office buildings that use pesticides and astringent cleaning products, and the neighborhood mall, whose host of synthetic odors assault the nostrils, especially around the holidays.

“We are putting so much into our environment that people are getting sick. I don’t think it’s a matter of personal rights now, I think it’s a matter of everyone’s health,” says Joan Ripple, a consultant to state Sen. Milton Marks, who chaired a Senate Judiciary subcommittee on the rights of the disabled.”

“In public policy terms, this could be defined as an issue of handicapped access, just like having a wheelchair ramp into a church or public building,” Brown says. “To have services that aren’t fragrance-free is to deny services to a group of people whose population is growing every day.”

End Qoute

I should say I actually is about personal rights. The personal right to not have to get ill from others vanity, egoism and shallowness.

And you do not need to have MCS to suffer from other Peoples habits, you only need astma and allergy to get ill from it.

I think the fewer would serve nuts to a person allergic and sensitive to nuts, so why do you force Your fragrance on us who get ill from it? You invade and hurt Our Health. Stop it now!

Parfymen inneholder allergenen citronellol.

Økning i ‘duftfeller’

NEWS! Scented shops are dangerous for employees and customers health

Shops are increasingly using perfume to lure customers. Unions follows the case of Abercrombie & Fitch with interest.

A job in a shop or plenty of visits to certain shops could give staff and customers allergy and breathing difficulties.

Authorities, experts and organizations, fear this because the use of the so-called scent marketing has increased in the last three years.

The Danish Working Environment Authority will not comment on specific cases, but chief Anne Therese Schultz-Petersen says that Labour Inspection Authority has started working with this problem.

“We have been aware of the case of scent marketing for some time and focus on it. We respond especially if there are allergens, which obviously is not good for the employees to be in, “she says, citing that there may be allergenic substances in perfumes, spraying out in stores.

“Overall, it is unnecessary exposure to workers when using perfume with such substances,” said Anne Therese Schultz-Petersen.

Many fragrances can cause allergies The U.S. clothing chain Abercrombie & Fitch is known for its extensive use of perfume in stores worldwide as Politiken.dk described on Tuesday, the Danish Labour Inspection Authority the last year trying to get the fashion chain to protect employees from the large quantities of perfume used in the stores. The perfume contains the allergen citronellol.

The shop workers union movement follows the the case of Abercrombie & Fitch
“Abercrombie & Fitch is the first company I’ve heard of that has gotten a injunction from Labour Inspection Authority about designer scent workplace exposure. We will follow up on it, once the case is settled,” said safety consultant in HK Trade Birte Haugaard. She gets more and more inquiries from members about the use of perfume in the workplace.

It’s a great working environment problem that our members should not be exposed to. It is also a problem for customers, but they may after all not to go in there,” she says.

Jeanne Duus Johansen, who heads the Centre for Allergy, warns that the many scents can cause allergies.

“Basically you can develop allergies if you have a daily contact with perfume containing allergenic substances. Many people also experience other symptoms when exposed to fragrances through the air, for example. discomfort and nausea. If you have asthma, you can also react in the airways due to very strong smell,” she says.

Increase in ‘scent traps’ According to the report ‘Growth through Experiences 2011’ there has been a large increase in the use of scent marketing.

In 2008, said 34 per cent of Danish companies that they used scents and music in their marketing. In 2011 the figure had risen to 47 percent – and 75 percent of the companies that they maybe will use it in three to five years.

“We are not very happy that we are led into the here scent traps. Lise Nørgaard, Asthma and Allergy Denmark”

This problem is known and recognized by Asthma and Allergy Denmark, which recently have been contacted by a number of citizens who complain about the use of perfume. The association is concerned about the development:

“We are not very happy that we are led into the here scent traps. We find that there is a large group of approximately 1 million Danes with asthma or hay fever, which is likely to have asthma attacks. And then we have a small group who are deprived of their social lives because they have scent sensitivity,” said communications Lise Nørgaard, who is surprised that there is no regulation in this area.

Heavy scents can cause headaches
Consumer Council goes a step further and calls for a ban on the use of perfume in stores for the sake of customers with asthma and allergies.

At the employers’ organization Danish Chamber of Commerce invites the shops to use scents wisely.

“Heavy scents can cause headaches and make employees sick. Even if you have a particular concept with scents, you have to take it into consideration.”

End Qoute

Article is translated to make it easier to English speaking visitors to read it.

I think scent marketing should be prohibited for health reasons. If everyone starts to use it in shops and other places, how shall we who have asthma and sensitivity go shopping, stay in hotels, work etc? This is a nightmare! We all need to breathe, and what we need to breathe is fresh air unpolluted!

Why?

Why write so much about sensitivity?

If no one ever open their mouth and talk about it,

then no one will never know.

If no one will ever know what it is like,

then nothing will ever happen to change the situration.

And francly, I do not do this only for myself,

We are several thousands who are sensitive to smoke chemicals and fragrance gassing in the air.

Situations where perfume becomes a problem

(Scroll down for English)

Lungs with asthma - a fresh left bronchiole - easy to breathe through, and to the right a sick bronchiole - not so easy to breathe through.

Lungs with asthma – a fresh left bronchiole – easy to breathe through, and to the right a sick bronchiole – not so easy to breathe through.

when-you-fragrance

Eimen låg i bussen.

Her er noen flere eksempler

Det blir like rent uten parfyme.

Fortsatt sjuk. Enda en slutten av en dag kom. Igjen tok jeg mine medisiner før natten. Falt i søvn.

Å stå i kø

The sensitivity trap

In English

I will here describe situations where perfume and sweet-smelling otherwise become a problem.

Those who know me know that I am a bus driver and have asthma diagnosed in 2007. I have never smoked and have never had asthma before this year. I got my asthma at work in a bus wash, it is an occupational injury. I am just one among millions of others who are sensitive to perfumes and related products.

Since I became asthmatic, I becine sensitive to among other things, perfumes in all types including scented products and also all kinds of colored products, tobacco, incense, etc. When I inhale any of this my lungs protest by the airways in the lungs become filled with mucus and the muscles around the bronchial spasms so my airways in the lungs become clogged and I have difficulty breathing. There has become an inhibition because it makes me unable to walk and be everywhere.

Lungs with asthma - a fresh left bronchiole - easy to breathe through, and to the right a sick bronchiole - not so easy to breathe through.

Lungs with asthma – a fresh leftover bronchiole – easy to breathe through, and to the right a sick bronchiole – not so easy to breathe through.Lungs with asthma – a fresh leftover bronchiole – easy to breathe through, and to the right a sick bronchiole – not so easy to breathe through.

Most people use fragrance in any form to make a good impression on other people. In a meeting with me and many others they become a health problem. Those who use perfume becomes a threat to the  very health of ours. This means that we pull ourselves away from them. They achieve the exact opposite and in addition they make us sick.

Here are some examples from the past incident

when-you-fragrance

I drove the bus up the mountain and took on board some students and then drove back down again. At the end of the road by the way, it’s time to let other students on board coming from a corresponding bus. The first 5 people went well, then boarded a guy with a lot of aftershave on him. The stench cane from far away. I’ve had some good weeks past few weeks, but when he came as a perfume bomb aboard the bus and then there were good times gone… I started to cough when the airways clogged and narrowed, and it did not stop. It sought only deeper into the lungs. I took medicine but I kept coughing and was short of breath and it only got worse. Luckily I was going on break right afterwards, so I parked the bus with all doors and window open in the cold weather. I had to air out the bus, the stench of his after shave water in the bus had to go. He had probably perfumed himself to make him fine for others, instead he became a health problem.

Here are some more examples

Some use perfume, others have not sprayed perfume on themselves, but use scent added products for washing their clothes. Perfumed products smell too, and they contain the same ingredients as the regular perfume, plus several other substances. Others use scented hair products and hair spray. I get sick from that just as I get from perfume. Most people do not think that others are using scented products, it seems as if they believe in their corner of the world that are the only one doing it. Overall it is a lot. In everyday I meet people all the time who use perfume of any kind. It’s everywhere.

Asthma is bad.

Astma er fælt.“After breakfast it’s either going to work or a day off, and out of the house. Now is the time to meet the rest of the world and interact with people and all their habits. During a working day I sit behind the stearing wheel of a bus and meet many people, and most of them use perfume, and many of them smoke. They go into the bus unaware that I have asthma. They smell of perfume, some have showered in it the same morning. Some use old perfume that you can sense from the smell of it. Clothes smell of perfume from detergents, fabric softeners, deodorants and such. Perfume in its purest form, aftershave, cologne and other scented products are also frequently used. Strong hair spray, deodorants, body spray, etc. The smell hit my nose and it often smells good. A smoker throw their cigarette right outside the bus door and enter the door smiling while blowing smoke out inside the bus, and someone blows smoke in my face. Since I need oxygen like all others, I must also breathe just like everyone else. The scent and smoke that just touched my nose is now moving down my Airways and into my lungs. This is it, I know a rasping sensation in my lungs, I hear and know crackles from the lungs, so I get breathless. It’s getting harder to breathe, and then I know that my lungs tighten up and locks in a tight position. I start to cough. Coughing is the body’s way to work harder to get air, and by coughing to get more air, I must also inhale more of other people’s perfume or smoke in the air, and then I get even more difficult to breathe, and I cough harder and harder. It becomes a vicious circle. customers ask about it is virus? They are afraid it infects. I must get fresh air, so I open the side window. I feel the fresh air coming in, and I turn my head slightly away from the customer to limit some of the perfume and the smoke from getting direct access to my lungs. I’m trying to get fresh air from outsider into my airway, and if it does not help I hold my breath to avoid getting customers perfume and smoke in my lungs.’ll sell the ticket and provide customer the changes as soon as possible. ”

A woman walks on board the bus and want to have a ticket to the city. Her hair is stiff like smithereens, hard sprayed with hairspray. Something inexpensive that stinks strongly from far away. As she enters the bus door, I feel my lungs protest and close in the chest.

“A new Monday, a new week at work. People go into the bus with their perfume and smoke. I sell tickets last week and the week before and the week before that … I continue to get sick from second hand perfume and smoke. They leane toward me to talk in all the noise of the bus, and again and again their smokers breath triggers my asthma, a dose of perfume, some other chemicals in some products they use, and again and again I get sick. ”

Perfume, shaving water etc on colleagues

Colleagues are also human beings and using perfumes and scented products. For example, I have been experiencing that collueges  with lots of aftershave have been in a room. When I then enter the room, I know the smell of shaving water, and seconds afterwards it travels to my lungs and I get cough and breathing difficulties and must escape room. I had to do the errand another day.

Another experience was when I was going to take over the route by another driver. We were going to do a driver shift, and I was to take over his bus. The person had aftershave on him and I had to open all doors and windows to air out before I could drive on. Again clogged lungs themselves.

In the break room, all should be able to thrive. There is smoke free, but it is allowed to use perfume because there is no law against using perfume. Colleagues wearubg aftershavie and perfumes. The room is filled with fragrance. Lungs tie up, the airways become tight, much like when you step fill Your lungs with cotton. The air can difficult pass. I get asthma attacks and have to escape out on the stairs, take the medicine and ventilate the room.

It’s nice to go shopping and not least find something new. The trip to the store can be a challenge.

“I go to the mall to shop. I walk into a fashion shop and thinking of buying a sweater. I can not wait to find something, I am so exited. I walk around the store and find what I’m looking for. Happy searching I hopefully look for the cashier and find it. Just nearby to it is the perfume department located, really on both sides, and in front of it. The Cashier is circumference of perfume products. People stand there and try perfume on themselves, they spray perfume from bottles. It spreads in the air and I can smell from far away. Cashier are just steps away. I look at my sweater, and then the perfume stand and so on the cashier where I need to go to get the sweater with me. I know that if I go to the cashier when I will be sick. With a sad sigh I put the sweater back on the shelf where I found it, and leave the store. No sweater for me, and all because of perfume. : ‘(”

“After work I have to go shopping. I need some food and some cleaning products, detergents and hygiene products. I take a cart and stroll down to the shelves. Taking my juice, bread, margarine, milk, dinner, fruits and vegetables. So far everything goes good. now is the time to enter among the shelves to buy detergents. There is a lot to choose from, all kinds of brands and most of them are full of fragrance, color and chemicals. And right in the midst that I find the products I can use without getting sick. problem is that they are placed among all the products I get sick from, and to buy them, I must stand up in the middle of all the chemicals from the other products I get sick from . Though they are in their packages, the concentration of perfumes and chemicals in the air is so strong that I get sick anyway. My lungs tighten and I get sick again. Why can not they have a special shelf on their own for these products? I feel angry, and I think that I have I asked them so many times! Sometimes I literally had to run into the hallway to grab the product I want and then run quickly back out to be as little exposed as possible. I feel me like an idiot when I do it. I look around to see if anyone saw me do it? What would they think? Same happens when I have to buy shower gel, soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, body lotion, deodorant, etc. All is located in the middle of all the brands I get sick from, and I have to go through the shelfs at risk getting sick just buying what I do not get sick from. Could I ask … How stupid is that? ”

Asthma react to substances 0.02 ppm.

“I went to a office the day after an asthma attack. I went through the entrence door. On the first floor there are various shops and a cafe. When I came in the front door I felt a faint aroma of a scented candle or possibly incense. I had to pass, there is only one way in. I felt my lungs get irritated again and I was angry, for just a few hours ago, I had a strong asthma attack and was in hospital at night and I had to spend a lot of money on treatment to get better. I was tired and my lungs were tired and felt weak. Due perfumes in the air, I had to run to the elevator while I held my breath to get out of the hall. I felt my lungs clog, but fortunately, the elevator opened and I could find my rescue in a small closed room without fragrance and perfume. There smelled only of dirt from the floor thankfully.
On the way out of the office again, I had to go through the same shopping area again, and now my lungs began to demonstrate for real. I had to run out of the mall to get fresh air and take medicine to break down the asthma attack.

Fragrance branding, or scent marketing

Scent Marketing is the fragrance of the indoor air in offices and other localities where the public has access. It is made to lure customers to buy more. For example, but not exclusively popular with shops, shopping centers, hotels, conference rooms, and such facilities and more. To make it useless for asthmatics and other sensitive.

image

A trip pharmacist can also mean challenges. Especially at Christmas time is a lot sale of various goods and perfumed incense. I encountered last Christmas not to be able to og inside the pharmacy because there was so strong perfumes and incense in the air. The air is filled with what I get sick from. I went into the pharmacy to get medicine to keep me fresh from asthma, and had to flee the pharmacy because of what makes me sick. I had a powerful astma attack inside the pharmacy and had to leave the prescription with the pharmacist and run out of the pharmacy premises. I had to stand outside in the street, and I had to shout to her through the door what I needed and telling her to deliver it outside where I was waiting. I could not enter. Be sick, forced out on the street because of it, and a feeling of being banished, humiliation and disease, plus all staring at me. I could not go to the drugstore for all of December and half of January. A place I must go to get my medication.

“In the coffee shop where I sit among many people. Lots’re dressed nice to meet friends. Pleasant. Sad thing about it is that they dress up in perfume, hair spray, etc. I drink my coffee. Sensor infection in the lungs sneak up on me because of the fragrance. If I get very bothered when is going to be very bad, and then I have to leave here too. ”

To meet friends who do not quite understand how bad it can be to have asthma in their perfumed environments can be a challenge. While will say straight out – Oh my… what stinks! Since I do not want to hurt their feelings I take the pretty version. I have a friend, an awesome lady, I like her a lot and we have a great time together. Unfortunately, one of her biggest interests are… just right perfume, and she uses often harsh and often perfume. She smokes a little too. When we meet and she has scented and smoke I have to go 2-3 meter away from her to not become sick. I will not spoil the mood so I go a distance from her. This is my solution for that she will not be upset. I do not think she fully understands how asthma affects when it happens. It’s been a little better, now she knows that she must not wear it in the car. I hope she ends up With being the hero. It’s a bit sad to be sick of a hug when you meet. You know the smell before you see her sometimes, and it is a pity because she is such a nice lady.

On a visit at home of others one can also create experiences

The person washing clothes in scented detergents and fabric softeners and dry tumbling clothes. The gases from the dryer spread about and I could not be there. Asthma attack of washing and drying clothes are very brutal and acute asthma attacks. Scented candles burned slowly spreading about and the experience of getting asthma attacks of scented candles is to me as if you slowly suck the oxygen out of the room. It is a creeping suffocating experience and finally I have to escape the room and maybe out of the house.

Air fresheners are also popular in private homes. Here I get a mixture of what is happening when exposed to the laundry, tumble dryer and scented candles.

To help with the dishes can be an ordeal too, because what is often on the bench? The scented dishwashing fellow! It is strange it must be so, perfume has no cleaning ability, it spreads only about a whiff of chemicals that I and many others get sick from.

Sleep over at others can also pose problems. Most people wash their sheets in scented detergents and fabric softener. When it is dry I do not get that immediate acute reactions, but more so that builds up over time. And sleeping is something that takes time, so the morning after, or after a few days in others may be breathing heavy and clog the lungs.

When I sleep over at others and not have my own soap, shower cream, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, deodorant etc with me I can not shower. I have either just showering in water without using soap and such, or wait until I get home. If I wash myself in scented soaps in the shower I get  asthma attack.

Cleaning agents at the home of others offering the same challenge. It is very common that people use perfumed and chemical-filled cleaning products on spray bottle for example, and ditto cleaning products for floors, benches, etc. All this makes me sick. Yes, you may begin to finally see how it can be to live with this?

“The evening comes and I get a call. A friend asks if I want to go to a restaurant? I am very happy and say yes, I’ll pick you up in half an hour :) I park outside and wait for him. When he enters the car smiling and I say – Hey!, and in the same second I get an asthma attack. He forgot that I have asthma and had sprayed aftershave all over them. The scent was so strong, and the fragrance filled the whole car. I had to open all the windows while I coughed ugly as the lungs try to get air, and took my medicine. But the medicine did not help, it was not enough. Lungs strangling me. I medicated a lot to keep the attacks down. It was cold outside and we drove with the windows open. My Friend froze but I could not close the windows, because if I did I would be very ill, it was bad now but would then be even worse. If I closed the windows I would have had to stop and exit the vehicle myself. I must have fresh air. I can not sit in a car where the perfume and it was a 15 minute drive to the restaurant. I had to have the windows open, but even with the windows open, I was very sick even if it made it a tiny bit better. Only second option would be to let him out of the car and let him walk home. It felt I’d been unkind. At the restaurant, I was sick all night. The aftershave reached me across the table, and my health was rejected throughout the evening. I tried to medicate, it helped a little, but it was never really an end to the misery. It was as bad from start to finish. It was also possible to hear it on my voice talking, voice was hoarse and weak. My breath made my voice sounded strange and jarring. After a while, I had to visit the ladies room. Both to go to the toilet, to get a break from the perfume at the table and also to take my medicine. Took my Symbicort medicine, my Ventoline was not strong enough to combat attack so I had to try something and I needed to rinse my mouth after. I went into the ladies room and a wall of perfume in the form of cleaning products and  airfresheners met me. I just took the medicine, and rinse my mouth, I had to og to the bathroom and now I was left breathing problems because of cleaners and airfreshener. : ( From the ashes left in the fire. I cleaned my mouth, and then quickly out again, back to the table and all the perfume. still sick. Yet another end of a day came. Again I took my medication before night. Fell asleep. I was not good at all. ”

Attached to the means to dress nicely, and then dressed people also into perfume chemicals. To sit a lot in a room whatever the situation and there is perfume and poor indoor air result in asthma attacks. I have experienced it both in the break room at work, on the bus, in people’s homes, in line at the store and at festive occasions among other situations.

que-and-sensitivity

“Early in the morning, I was going to work. It was a fresh, clear day with fresh air. I walked towards the car standing in the parking lot. So I heard quick steps on the gravel behind me. It was my neighbor who was running late on her way to work . She was in haste to reach the bus. I said it’s almost gone and I could give her a lift. I drive past the hospital where you work, I said. She was very happy., we sat in the car. During the same second she closed the door, I felt the scent of her perfume. My lungs reacted immediately to it. Suddenly I regretted my goodness to offer to give her a ride. But now, she surely had missed the bus and I could not ask her to step out of the car. I opened windows without telling her I was sick and took some medicine. I kept quiet about it. I would not insult her. But I think unfortunately I will think twice before I give her a ride again. If so, she must go wash of the fragrance off her. It sucks to be sick just because you are kind. ”

Love is great when it works and your health is good.

“Sometimes I think about finding a man. Sometimes I feel it would be nice to have someone. But then, I have problem with my asthma. I can not have a man who uses tobacco, I would be sick from his breath and kisses. And he must not use perfumes and perfumed products, and if he is using perfume and fragranced products, he must give it up, because I get the sick from it too. Such may be difficult to achieve. A lot of people do not accept the need to change their habits and likes. So now certainly well over half the population are out of the picture. So what is left when all is sorted out? On top of that after sorting all the “toxic” candidates out, I have to find some meeting me among them. And where to find him? For a wonderful world it would be without perfume and smoke. Days with the ability to love. Days without sickness! And maybe even days without medicine? Well, I think I must have medicine anyway, but at least days with not so much medication and fever asthma attacks. Whenever I get sick in asthma I must medicate even more. I get asthma attacks often, so I use a lot of drugs. If I’m exposed to less chemicals and irritants then get I more rareøy get sick, I’m less sick and use less medicine. ”

I talked about it to go to the toilet.

Going to the bathroom is something most people take for granted that things are going well, but such is not the case for a sensitive person. To go to the bathroom can be a challenge but not due to what most would react, namely a dirty toilet. Ok, we who are sensitive also dislike dirty toilets, and just as not sensitive so I also turn in the door if it is nasty. But in addition to this, scented, color sat, antiseptic, strong cleaning agents, air fresher, scent blocks, scented candles, incense etc make the toilet to an inaccessible corner. When so used the toilet get a barrier, a wall that is not able to og through. You may want to compare it with wheelchairs and stairs. The lungs clog, the rattling, I cough, I have to run from it. As I stand there and is not able to go to the bathroom because of the perfume.

Taking a ride on the ferry, store, shopping centers, take out a freshly washed bus at work, or take the bus to the store, government offices etc may also pose challenges and disease. On the ferry and everywhere else they wash like everyone else does, and of course it is good that it is clean, but they are not aware of asthma and allergy. Here they use only scented and lots of chemistry that I get sick of. It is a bad weather out, I have either not the car with me, and it’s so cold out there that it is untenable to sit in the car on the ride over if I have it with me. I decide myself to go to the salon. The cleaning staff is there and use the cleaning spray bottle and other things, everything is strong and perfumed. I know the lungs react and I have to turn in the door and go out in the cold and the bad weather again. Locked out by perfumes and harsh chemicals. This also happens at work as a bus driver since I often take the ferry in the job. It also happens in other places where such cleaning agents are used.

One episode I remember very well was just before Christmas and I was buying potatoes for my Christmas dinner. I came to the store and went in the door. I smelled the cleaning Product as they were washing the floor. I got no further than within the gates before I had a severe asthma attack, it literally stank the whole store of the strong cleaning Product they used that was so strong it smelled strongly like degreasing about. I tried to medicate with asthma medicine in hope that it would pass, but it did not, I knew it built up to a real bad and acute attack so I had to walk out of the store. I could not be there. Cashier lady that I use to talk to heard my asthma attack and was upset. – Do you react so bad? she said. Yes, I can not be here, ‘I said. So I went out.

What you use to clean the premises are very important for customers.

But I needed my potatoes so I just had to act, and so early there is only one shop open. So I went out to the car and retrieved my protection mask that I use at work, put it on and completed shopping. But it is embarrassing to have to wear such a mask because the store is cleaned, I knew the others who were there looked at me. But I have no choice when they use as fragranced and chemical filled cleaners.

To pass through a shop with open plan onto the center, ie open door to the halls, make that perfume and fragrance from scented products, including essential oils, spreads in the air and causing asthma attacks.

To queue

To queue also offers disease. In front of me and behind and among beside me stand people wearing perfume, deodorant, body spray, hair products, vaskemedler, fabric softeners, etc. I have to keep something over the nose and mouth, and in the worst case I have to go and can not buy or have what I should.

It is important to be neutral when you meet sensitive people, also unknown, it is important to be fragrance free. A very dirty person who has not washed in a few days is as bad as a person who uses perfume. Both provide asthma attacks.

Sometimes I can not sleep so well, and sometimes I wake up too because of Asthma. I have experienced waking up by asthma attack. My lungs choked me, and I woke up. The lungs tightened, it did not air. It was scary. Had to rush to the kitchen to take medication.

I have cleaned my home for scented washing products, perfumed cleaning products and hygiene products to help my health. I buy perfume free. The home is a perfume and smoke free zone. At least here I do not get sick from smoke and perfume. Well, that is as long as the visitors who come here do not use perfume and smoke even if they must smoke outside, it is with Third hand smoke. Both my home and my car is a perfume and smoke free zone.

Most people think that if someone is “allergic or something” then it’s just taking medicine, then the problem is solved. It’s not the right answer. The medication helps, but they do not cure the disease, it just takes away some of the problems. What happens is instead that when one continues to be subjected to what one is allergic and sensitive to, the symtoms is smoldering constantly. It does not go away. You take medicine to push it down, but then you still are exposed to allergens and irritants all the time when firing it up under asthman again and again and again. It is like a steam boiler that is trying to lift a piston, while pushing the piston down from the tick. Steamer trying to lift the piston is Astman that react to allergens and irritants such as perfume, and pressed down the drugs, and so on until you remove all allergens and irritants. Real help is only to remove things that make an allergic, asthmatic, sensitive person ill. And what makes it worse is that if you have to medicate because they are sick of all this external exposure – all the things one gets sick all day long from so many sources elsewhere than at home, that one must use very much medicine that you get side effects from the medications tremors, heart clapping, and pressure on the body functions when you can not avoid it. It really is a great game to have in addition to breathing problems. It would really help if there was smoke and perfume in the world, because so many people use it everyday everywhere, even all over the world. Wherever it goes it’s there. It’s hard for me to clear the world of perfume and tobacco smoke and other horrible chemicals so I can get it better. You must do this to me, you who use it.

Now, this is the very dense with information, and of course I do other stuff in between too where I do not have it like this. But I have skrivit here describe some of the things you have to undergo a perfumed world.

It seems easy for people to care about those who have maternity care allergy, skin allergy, pollen allergy, kvalsteralergi etc, but when it comes to perfume when they are most annoyed.

nuts-fragrance-allergy

Perfume, incense etc spreads in the air that everyone must breathe, just like smoking does. Us who can not tolerate perfume must also breathe, we need clean air to breathe.

I want a broad information campaign in television and media about like that I have talked about here, and I wish that it will be forbidden the use of perfume, aftershave, cologne and use of all kinds of scented products, including essential oils, where the public has These and / or may enter, in addition also all workplaces, whether employees. Requirements for the use of perfumes and perfumed products and to public transport for employees, passengers and the cleaning. Both employees and customers are sensitive. Employees must be able to work without getting sick, and customers must be able to benefit businesses, offices etc without getting sick. The reason I want a ban on adding fragrance to any products at all. Then I could and everyone else in my situation to be healthy in several situations. We could take all the people without getting sick of them. And I struggled test not allene about this. There should be no need to have to be sick because others Faafeng and affectation. What is most important? Health or affectation?

What if it were you?

A community diagnosis of symptoms – by MD Aage Hegge Hansen

A community diagnosis of symptoms

MD Aage Hegge Hansen “As the first Norwegian doctor publicly (including on NRK) declared battle against perfume pollution, I have via the web come in contact with patients all over the world.

My contacts have strengthened me in theory that it is the fragrance of hygiene products that are hazardous to health, hygiene is not in itself, as some here at home has believed.

When the fourth of Norwegian adolescents with asthma, it is in reality a national disaster. This gives asthma including increased risk of fatal COPD later in life. But modern asthma therapy is so effective that patient and doctor can easily forget disease is so dangerous degree and that the best treatment is still trying to find the reasons for getting rid of asthma. Unfortunately, few people seem to be interested in it.

It is not many years ago since smokers could freely wide in all arenas. People with sensitive lungs could protest as much as they wanted, the smoke was a legal product that was lit where you found it for good. This is no longer, the health argument has trumped all other arguments, and now tobacco is rolled back using the law. It will thus soon become marginalized as a public health problem.

Now the perfume used is the main challenge, something most people are able to recognize at the individual level. If person A on the job stinks so strongly of perfume, that person B gets sick from it and are not able to be there anymore – it is then that B must quit his job, or is it A, which must begin to meet up with odor-free clothes? I would think that B’s claim of fresh air should be considered more legitimate than A’s desire to use perfume, in unlimited quantity, anywhere and anytime.

Perfume emissions primarily from clothing, hair and skin of the user, but also sits in the house and car interiors, which one gets secondary degassing up to months and years. The gases are causing a number of “conditions” as Sick Building Syndrome (SBS), Building Related Illness (BRI) and Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS). Primary and secondary perfume degassing has become so dominant  cause of disease, and gives such a typical view on the matter, depending on the degree of exposure and time exposed, it may be appropriate to define a separate syndrome; Perfume Related Illness (PRI).

Regardless, perfume and tobacco smoke two sides of the same contamination issue, and perfume use is so extensive now in 2011, that the whole body of society may be said to be sick and perfume damaged, in addition to that they are already and still tobacco damaged. The difference is that while damages to health du to tobacco is under consideration, with the Tobacco Act as medicine, no perfume injuries is taken up for discussion even in the responsible departments and organisations.
With the honorable exception of Asthma and Allergy Association, which at the congress in 2010 adopted a policy of smoke-and Fragrance-free public space. It is the only sensible from a public health perspective.” MD Aage Hegge Hansen, Norway

Nut, fur and fragrance

People tend to treat different sensitvities differently. It seams Ok to be gentle, understanding and caring when it comes to food allergy, fur allergy and other such allergies, but when you start to talk fragrance people get  a strange look on their face. It is like when someone start to talk smoke bans with smokers, they do not seam to think perfume can be a cause of illness and also they stand up stating their right to use it. As I use to say to a friend who smokes that is very anti to alcohol, but think that it should be ok to smoke. He thinks it do not harm anyone, not as bad as alcohol does anyway. I say

” – If I sit beside you having a beer with my dinner when we eat together, it does not make you ill from it. But if you smoke beside me it makes me and others there ill.”

He still protests and claim it is a violation on his freedom and right to choose for himself. Many smokers are like this.

Then we have those who aka LOVE FRAGRANCE! If you tell them their fragrance is hurtful to your and other sensitive people’s health and that they should not use it, and if it comes to turms on a fragrance ban and protecting peoples health they turn red on you. They also feel it is their right to use fragrance, and they get offended and get sad, feeling like the smokers that it is a violation on their freedom and right to choose for themselves.

What about the freedom and right for those sensitive to be and stay healthy?

The big wonder is that it seam like it is all Ok! by people to care about those who are sensitive to food, animals, dust, grass and so on, all of what does not go on them personal. As long as they do not have to make a offering to prevent another person from getting sick it is alright to be allergic and sensitive, and then they are more than willing to help and care.

Rhinitis – What is?

Rhinitis – What is?

There are two types of rhinitis: allergic rhinitis and non-allergic rhinitis.

Allergic rhinitis

Allergic rhinitis is caused by allergens. Allergy symptoms are the result of a chain reaction that starts in the immune system.  The antibodies travel to cells that release histamine and other chemicals, causing an allergic reaction with symptoms such as sneezing, stuffiness, a runny nose, itching and post-nasal drip. People with allergic rhinitis are also prone to itchy, watery eyes (from allergic conjunctivitis), and they may be more sensitive to irritants such as smoke, perfume or cold, dry air. Rhinitis can contribute to other problems such as asthma, sinus or ear conditions, or trouble sleeping.

Diagnosis of Allergic Rhinitis  An allergist/immunologist, will take a detailed health history, perform a physical exam and test you for allergies. Skin tests show the results within 20 minutes. Possible treatment plan: Steps to manage your symptoms include avoiding the allergens you are allergic to, medications or allergy immunotherapy (allergy shots).

Non-Allergic Rhinitis

Many people with rhinitis symptoms do not have allergies. If you have non-allergic rhinitis, avoiding allergens is unnecessary and won’t help your symptoms.

Non-allergic rhinitis usually begins in adults and causes year-round symptoms, especially a runny nose and nasal stuffiness. Strong odors, pollution, weather changes, smoke and other irritants may cause symptoms of non-allergic rhinitis. Non-allergic rhinitis symptoms can also develop as side effects of medications, including some blood pressure medicines, oral contraceptives or medications used for erectile dysfunction. Another type of non-allergic rhinitis is caused by nasal decongestant sprays such as oxymetazoline, when used for long periods of time. This type of medication-induced rhinitis is called rhinitis medicamentosa.

Treatment of Non-Allergic Rhinitis Oral antihistamines and anti-leukotriene drugs generally do not benefit non-allergic rhinitis. However, treatment options include nasal corticosteroid sprays and nasal antihistamine sprays. Ipratropium nasal spray can relieve a runny nose and decongestant pills can be used as needed to relieve nasal stuffiness.

Allergy – What is?

Allergy is caused by allergens. These are substances which are usually harmless, but can cause allergic reactions in certain people.

Allergy symptoms are the result of a chain reaction that starts in the immune system. Your immune system controls how your body defends itself. For instance, if you have an allergy to pollen, your immune system identifies pollen as an invader or allergen. Your immune system overreacts by producing antibodies called Immunoglobulin E (IgE). These antibodies travel to cells that release histamine and other chemicals, causing an allergic reaction with symptoms.

Products location in shops vs asthma and allergy

Perfume allergy, the second most common allergy

(Scroll down for English)

Of all allergies are perfume allergiy ranked as second of all allergies. It shows one of the largest studies that have been conducted in the area. Perfume allergies can cause eczema, skin diseases and related disorders. For many it is a problem that leads to long-term sick leave.

The study was conducted in Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal and Italy. According to chief physician at the Department of Dermatology at Skåne University Hospital, and one of those responsible for the study, it is the most comprehensive study of its kind.

The results show that nickel allergy is the most common. Perfume Allergies in second place after nickel allergy.

How it really feels – by Karen Skålvoll

I have an online friend who got asthma with alpha1 antitrypsin deficiency. At her last blog entry she talks about what it really feels like having asthma with alpa1 and peoples habits and likes. It was so good explained that I asked her to allow me to post it here on my blog, and she was kind enough to allow it. So here my dear reader you can find out how it is to live with asthma with an alpha1 deficiency in additon. From my side: Having a “normal asthma” is just like that just except for the burning sensation and the dying lung. But even a person with an “ordianary asthma” can get damages to the lungs when exposed to stuff they get sick from, the lungs get hardened, and the illnesses symtomes can develop to become 24/7. It is therefore very important to any asthmatic – alpha1 or not – to avoid any what makes the asthmatic ill. Happy reading, and hopefully listening. – Annelie

How it really feels – by Karen Skålvoll

“It is certainly very difficult for those who are healthy to understand that we who are living with a serious lung disease react to fragrances others have chosen to take on. The fact that it burns the lungs, the mucus, painful spasms in the bronchi and is really just child’s play, because us with alpha 1, we get lung damage as well. Sometimes I am willing to pay the price to visit some of the world, but mostly I let it be. I stay home. Putting an injection of medicine to open to breathe is no fun, the heart races away with a pulse that is sky high and it is physically difficult to hold a glass, not talking about holding a pen or write.

When it comes to those with alpha 1 lacking the protein (alpha 1 antitrypsin) it is the alpha1 antitrypsin that protects the lungs, and we do not have that. This means that everything we breathe damages lung tissue much more than those who do not have this gene defect. A bit like in children who have not yet fully developed lung tissue (that you can read about here: children’s health in front of the staff’s vanity, indoor air quality, children and allergies) I have severe uncontrolled asthma on top of my Alpha 1 can be on any given day loss of life in an asthma attack because others have chosen to dress up. Arguments like, “I used just a little” or “only little won’t hurt anyone” or “it’s just soooo little..” or “I can not help it..” provoke sometimes even though I have gotten extremely hard bones in my nose eventually. The vanity of others will go in front of other people’s health, I think is directly frightening. Let everyone breathing fresh air that does not bathe in perfume, it is the best for children, allergy sufferers, those with lung diseases and, not least for most people.

Since I have alpha 1 I also feel on the psychological element in this. My lungs are damaged and get damaged more because of all those who smear themselves and spray themselves with so much, if I get an asthma attack I am simply promoted one step closer to death. It’s a brutal reality that is not spoken about. To smoke or use spray in one form or another close to some of alpha 1 is considered an abuse, because we get lung damage of the sort. The more we tell, the more we talk about this the more knowledge comes out of the public. I hope that future generations will not have to hear all the prattling that those who talk about freedom of perfume are selfish, they can only wear masks, they can stay home, etc. No, the only thing that counts is the information we need to be visible and we must have the courage to talk about the unpleasant consequences of others’ decorating.” – Karen Skålvoll

“For me equality is…

To be able to do the same as others on the same terms and possibilities.

Specifically for me it would be a wonder-world to be able to go wherever I want, meeting, dealing with and talk with whomever I want without being exposed to tobacco and perfume that I am asthmatic to. Dropping lung congestion, to let go detours, avoiding places, avoid talking to others due to it. And an end to the open testing perfume in a store (it should happen in a closed in space.) The use of scented products, fragrance block, air fresh, and strong cleaners that clog the lungs in the room where the public has access. This is a social barrier, a barrier that prevents me from going places where it is and talk to people who use it. I have to avoid the fact that I’m being dense in the lungs. Everyone must have fresh air and healthy lungs to feel good. It’s on my wish list.”

Do medicine “cure” asthma and allergy?

(Scroll down for English)

Do medicine “cure” asthma and allergy?

Today I read the Norwegian Asthma and Allergy Association’s Asthma Allergy magazine in issue 2. 2012 an article about a professor of Allergology (Erik Florvaag) the term that medications can “cure” asthma and allergies. These ways of expressing what medications for asthma and allergy are able to perform for a patient, I have heard from other doctors as well. I will now educate doctors about what really is. It may sound a bit arrogant, but as asthma and allergy patient I am provoked when I hear doctors express themselves that way.

Traditional medicines for asthma and allergies do not cure the disease. If pills and inhaled medication for asthma and allergies would have cured the disease would the person be healthy and not need any more medicine against the disease. See, for example, when you take a headache, you take a pill and you’re healthy. Headaches are usually not a chronic disease so that if you take a pill then the patient is no longer sick. The same goes for when in case of a bacterial infection and you take penicillin. Do you have asthma and allergies then you are chronically ill, and pills and inhaling medicine you get for asthma and allergy symptoms just takes away the symptoms so you can live a life less charged as symptom free as possible. It does not make you cured.

All doctors know that a person who has asthma and allergies should avoid contact with allergens and irritants to use the least, possible medicine. Among other things, because the medications have side effects and the more drugs you use the greater the risk of side effects. Side effects that can be rather horrific an scary, like a racing heart and shaking hands. In addition, if one exposes oneself to allergens and irritants an allergy and asthma i worsens the disease and the sensitivity is increased if one is exposed to what you are allergic and asthmatic to. It happens even if you take your pill and inhalations. The body must continue on and work against the pain. To continue to put strain on the body is like extinguishing fire with wood. No medicine will per definition cure it.

Wherefore, I question the way you express yourself when you say that traditional medicine for asthma and allergy cure asthma and allergies. As this is not the case when you mislead people to believe that an allergic and asthmatic person takes medication so they are healthy. All of us who have asthma and allergies know that it is not the case.

This way of expressing yourself as a physician is also unfortunate for several reasons. There mislead others who do not have asthma and allergies to believe that if we just take medication so it does not matter how much we are exposed to allergens and irritants. This means that we often hear when we pray to not get exposed to cigarette smoke, perfume, dogs, cats, chemicals, perfumed products, flowers and everything else what you can be allergic and asthmatic to that one can just “- Take a pill!”

I encourage all physicians in Norway and other countries to express themselves in a more correct manner:
1) asthma and allergy is a normally life-long chronic disease
2) medications for asthma and allergy only takes away the symptoms but do not cure the disease.

Kind regards

Annelie Molin

Immune effects of respiratory exposure to fragrance

I found a research I want to share. Already in year 2007 they found that fragranced products can affect the immune system, respiration and give respiratory diseases and allergy. They found this out the same year I got my asthma, from secondhand smoking and fragranced washing agents used at work.

“Inhalation of the fragrance chemicals, isoeugenol and cinnamal (Isoeugenol (purity >99%) and cinnamal (purity >98%)), by mice resulted in immune reactions in the respiratory tract. This was observed in experiments performed by the RIVM (National Institute for Public Health and the Environment) of which results indicate that inhalation of some fragrance chemicals could induce unwanted effects on the immune system.

Fragrance chemicals are common ingredients in such consumer products as cosmetics and scented products. Several fragrance chemicals are known to cause allergy after skin exposure, but it is unknown whether inhalation of these fragrance chemicals can cause allergic reactions or other unwanted immune reactions. Till recently, it was assumed that inhalation of fragrance chemicals was harmless for humans, because there was no exposure via inhalation. However, applying fragrance chemicals in scented products used indoors, has changed this.

RIVM investigated the effects of inhalation of isoeugenol and cinnamal, fragrance chemicals that can cause skin allergy. Mice were exposed to the fragrance chemicals via inhalation. Effects on the immune system were measured using a respiratory lymph node assay, which measures cell proliferation in lymph nodes of the respiratory tract. Inhalation of both isoeugenol and cinnamal resulted in stimulation of the immune system of the respiratory tract. The effects of isoeugenol were more pronounced than those of cinnamal. This is in contrast with results observed after skin exposure, after which both these fragrance chemicals were found equally potent in inducing skin allergy. This implies that effects of fragrance chemicals on the immune system depend on the route of exposure.

washing powders, and scented products to improve the smell in homes, offices, cars and stores. The last category contains many different products, for example bathroom sprays, incenses, fragrant candles, and room perfumes. Exposure to fragrance chemicals used in scented products is predominantly via inhalation. For some applications, such as room perfumes, this exposure is chronic, while for others, for instance bathroom sprays, exposure is now and then.

Skin exposure to certain fragrance chemicals can induce contact allergy. The EU Scientific Committee on Consumer and Non Food Products (SCCNFP) has compiled a list with 24 fragrance chemicals that are most frequently reported as contact allergens.

For safety evaluation of fragrance chemicals the major route of exposure is considered to be the dermal route. Currently, exposure via inhalation in safety evaluations this route is not included. However, consumers can also be exposed via inhalation.

2007 TNO (Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research) together with the RIVM has developed a mouse model to assess the respiratory sensitizing potential of chemicals. In this model mice were exposed via the respiratory route on three consecutive days.

The immune response was determined by measuring cell proliferation and cytokine responses in the lymph nodes draining the respiratory tract. In this model, the most pronounced effects were found in the mandibular lymph nodes, which drain the nasopharynx.

To expose mice to these fragrance chemicals two methods of distribution were used: vaporization with maximum vapour pressure or nebulization of aerosols in acetone. Isoeugenol and cinnamal are known human skin sensitizers.

Mice were exposed noseonly to either isoeugenol or cinnamal for 45, 90, 180 or 360 minutes per day on day 0, 1 and 2. Controls were exposed to the vehicle for 360 minutes per day on day 0, 1, and 2. Mice were exposed to the fragrances either via evaporized or via nebulized test material.

Exposure to aerosols of isoeugenol (300 ppm) resulted in toxic effects in the mice that were exposed for 360 min/day. After two days of exposure one mouse died and the other mice displayed several signs of distress. These mice were not exposed to isoeugenol on the third day. Effects of the two days exposure to isoeugenol were assessed on day 5. On the third day two mice died that were exposed for 180 minutes/day for 3 days. The other mice in this group appeared normal.

Toxic effects were also observed after nose-only exposure to aerosols of cinnamal (300 ppm). Two mice died after exposure to cinnamal for 360 minutes/day for 1 day. The other mice in this group displayed several signs of distress.

The fragrance chemicals, isoeugenol and cinnamal, two known skin sensitizers, have been tested in the respiratory lymph node assay to assess their effects on the immune system after respiratory exposure.

The substance is delivered as a mixture of vapour and liquid droplets that will at least lead to local high dose levels due to impaction of the pure substance on respiratory tract epithelium. The size of the droplets (~ 5 μm) prevents them to reach the lower airways and alveoli, though once deposited, the compound can continue to evaporate resulting in significantly higher concentrations in the alveolar air spaces.

Immune reactions caused by chemicals in the lung can also induce other pulmonary reactions. Some chemicals induce a Th1-type immune responses in the lungs, as has been shown in rodent models. Skin allergens such as DNCB (dinitro-chloro-benzene), DNFB (dinitrofluoro-benzene) and picryl chloride were able to induce allergic reactions in the lungs, e.g. laryngitis, pneumotis, and airway hyperreactivity to non-specific stimuli.”  – rivm.nl, RIVM 2007 ‘National Institute for Public Health and the Environment’.

In this pilot research project from 2007 of respiratory exposure of fragrance some of the mice died from inhaling the fragrance chemicals. Even though this research is not ended, and more research is needed to be done it is remarcable that what people spray on themselves, smear on themselves, wash their clothes with, and wash their homes with, fragranced candles, airfresheners and any product holding fragrance can kill mice when they inhale fragrance after only 2 – 3 days.

Something to think about.

The environmental impairment by allergy and sensitivity

Most people can go where ever they like, they can do what ever they like, and they take it for granted. They go to work, they got to the store, they go to the movies, training studio, hotels, visit friends and family and many other places without getting ill.

Not everyone is as fortunate. Chemicals are everywhere in the surroundings, in everything we use every day from soap, perfume, cologne, after shave, deodorants, tobacco, washing agents, fabric softeners, shampoo, conditioner, toiletry products, cosmetics, hair color, beauty products like hair spray, hair mousse, hair gel, nail polish, fragranced products, furnitures, cars, petroleum products, paint, houses, plastic, clothes, shoes, water is cleaned with chlorides a.s.o. Our waste we get rid of either tossed in the toilet, flushed down the drains, or it is transported to the waste station, and all this sets its mark on us and on the environment around us together with all the things we use and put on us every day.

It affects the quality of the water and it spreads its chemicals to the lakes and the water. The animals take it in and it travels through the food chain to us, the humans. Chemicals in the everyday use from soap to the diesel you fill your tank which affect the health of the humans. Most people do not think of their cleaning products and washing products for their clothes, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, hairspray, cosmetics with perfume as a threat, not to themselves and not to others.

The plain truth is that all those products contain perfume, and what is perfume? Perfume is partly made from industrial produced oil and petroleum products, undustrial alcohol, among other ingredients and lots of them are a danger to our health in the long run, and can cause cancer, allergies, asthma, mcs, have an effect on our reproduction capability and many other illnesses. They are also a problem for those already sensitive.

Many of the products that the manufacturer state is natural or even organic may contain some chemicals, and also some products like for an example pine, flowers and other natural content, essential oils, and other products also give away fumes of such kind that may trigger the illness to break out.

Now how can this be a handicap?

When people develop allergy, asthma and other lung diseases, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) and such diseases they get sick from many or in many cases all of the above mentioned chemicals and products.  A person with allergies, asthma and other lung diseases, MCS and such can get acutely ill from such products. To improve the environmental handicapped’s daily life they have to remove themselves from all of such. Perfume, smoke, scented and chemical filled products others use and chemicals in paint, furnitures, buildings, building materials, plastic and similar, cars, clothes,  pesticides a.s.o are a hazard to the environmental impaired person. A person with environmental handicap by sensitivities can help their own situation to a degree and stop using the products that make them sick, and if they can afford it also build a house, a home from safe materials. But all around there are people who uses all what they get sick from, and places built from materials from unsafe materials.

In shops for an example the location of products and how they are set up in the store can be of great importance to the sensitive persons health. Is it good to let chemicals and chemical filled products stay with food and allergy friendly washing agents and allergy friendly personal hygiene products a.s? Is it good to have the perfume products right beside the cashier desk? Flowers just inside the entrence of a store, is that a good idea? Smoking everywhere in public places, both indoors and outdoors? Clean public room, restaurants a.s. places with high chemical and perfumed washing agents? Probably not, and you will understand why if you continue reading.

What makes it an environmental handicap?

An illness becomes an environmental handicap when the person is prohibited from going places, living places, work, associate with other people in a normal way because if they do they would get sick from chemicals people use, what chemicals are in building materials, workplaces, indoor air environment as well as outdoors a.s.o.

What makes this a problem that most people do not think of, is that most people have some kind of perfume on them. Now you may think and want to say: – No, I have not sprayed perfume on me today! Well, maybe you have not, but still you probably got perfume on you. Think back, what did you put on today? You showered, took a bath or washed yourself, did you use scented products washing yourself? Soap, shower creme, shampoo, conditioner? After that you maybe put some lotion on? Was it perfume in that? And later on did you put on a scented deodorant? And then you combed your hair and maybe styled it. What did you put in your hair? Did you use hairspray? Hair mousse? Hair gel? Hair wax? What was in that? Now it is time to get dressed… The clothes you washed yesterday or another day before.. What wash agent did you use? What about fabric softener? Were they fragranced? What else were in it? If you are a woman you maybe put makeup on. What is it in that? If you are a man you probably used barber foam and maybe aftershave?

Before you even had breakfast you have put on a lot of perfume and chemicals without even thinking about it.

You did not have to take the bottle and spray it to your body, put it behind your ear or smear it on your face.

How can this be a problem?

People who have allergies, asthma and other lung diseases, MCS and other similar illnesses have a reaction to things they are subjected to in the surroundings. For some it takes real small dozes, so small a healthy person would not recognize it. People having asthma react on such as 0,02 ppm substances in the air. They can remove all of what make them sick from themselves and in their own home, but when they go out they meet you and all the others that have their own habits and likes, and that use every day what they like to use without thinking of their use and that they use many bad chemicals.

In addition to all the fragrance products we have perfume, deodorants, aftershaves, cologne and so on. This is the ones that are the strongest smells that contain a lot of  chemicals. And the perfume in the scented products are the same as in the bottle you spray on yourself.

Chemicals you find in most of the things we use everyday, and in most of the buildings we are in and visit everyday Spread in the air we all breathe. Some chemicals are worse than others but all chemicals evaporate and give fumes from themselves that is what make allergic, asthmatic, mcs and similar ill from the exposure of it.

Look out

Look out the window and think of how many things are made from chemicals? How many people are there in the world? And how many of those use perfume or fragrance products? Buildings are they chemical free? Paint? Fabrics? Fillings? Wet protections? Glue? Carpets? What are they made of?

How does this work for those with allergy, asthma, MCS and others with similar illnesses?

The environmental handicap

Allergy, asthma and other lung diseases, MCS and other similar diseases got to do with the capability to stand outer impact on the person being sick. In an environment free from what make those people sick they are not as sick, and in best cases without symptoms.

Environmental Illness Resource:
“Environmental Illness is a term used to describe illness in which environmental triggers play a significant role in producing symptoms, and the illness itself. People suffering from environmental illness may have allergies, be sensitive to certain chemicals, as in multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) or be unable to work/stay  in an office or other enclosed environment without becoming ill, which is known as sick building syndrome.” IE-Resource.org

In an environment with allergens, irritants and products, substances and fumes that have a bad impact on the allergic, asthmatic or other lung disease, MCS sick person they have everything from small to severe symptoms of their illness. Any person that get ill from something would like to remove themselves from what make them ill, in order to feel better. When a person get sick from something in the surroundings (environment) or the symptoms get so bad the person can not be or stay  in the place, location and environment, they have an environmental inhibition. That goes for all buildings public, private and homes, shops, buisnesses, public transportations, hospitals, doctors offices, other health care, a.s.o. Even a person that is stuffed with chemicals – mostly tobacco and perfume or scented products but not excluding other stuff – on them can be an environmental inhibition area, equally with their home, car and such.

So what defines an environmental inhibition?

When a person have an illness that is only a problem some places and the person can be even free from the symptoms of the illness other places where what make the person sick is removed from the premises, it is an environmental inhibition. This is because the surroundings/environment hinders the person from going there. If the same place were cleaned from what make the allergic, asthmatic, MCS or similar get sick from, then the person can enjoy the place without getting sick.

The tobacco smoke, smog, dust, along with perfume, chemical filled and perfume filled cleaning agents, candles, scented candles, incense, airfresheners, and other airborne pollution makes a threat to the environmental inhibited’s health and possibility to be in the environment where this is found, both indoors and outdoors.

It is for an example not uncommon that allergic, asthmatic, MCS and others with sensitivities must “cruise” between and/or away from smoke, perfume and other chemical use in the public room, even outdoors to avoid getting sick. They are chased and forced other places by others use.

Then they can just stay away from it and avoid it?

Yes, that is the theory, but in the real life it is unfortunately often not practically done.

If you have an illness that make you sick from fumes from building materials commonly used, perfumed and scented products, chemical filled and/or perfumed and chemical filled washing agents a.s.o that is used all over every where, where would you go? Maybe you even get sick from the house you live in, because it is built from materials that evaporate fumes that make you ill.

Where would you then go?

The legal and the medical say:

In the lungs that looks almost like a sponge with small pipes air and oxygen is transported. Those pipes are air-ways called Bronchi and out from them springs the even smaller ones called Bronchiole and in the end of those the Alveoli is located. The Alveoli is connected to the blood stream of the body and the blood transports the oxygen to the rest of the body including the brain, liver, kidneys, muscles and so on.

Asthmatics and people with other lung diseases need oxygen too. Air is breathed in through the mouth and nose and goes through the wind-pipe to the lungs. When the air/oxygen arrive to the lungs it is first transported to the bronchi and over into the bronchiole wich then transport the air/oxygen further to the alveoli that is the last stop in the lungs before the oxygen is transported to the rest of the organs in the body.

The bronchiole in an asthmatic person narrows (se img) when subjected to perfume, smoke, dust, exhaust or other things the person having asthma get sick from. When the bronchiole’s narrows it hinder air to get through to the alveoli, and the person get hard to breathe or what we call an asthma attack. When breathing fresh air with no pollution, irritants or allergens in the air breathed in, the asthmatic person usually can breathe rather normally. When a person having an asthma attack get all tight lungs then it is the bronchiole that get inflamed and cramp, and the asthmatic person can not breathe easily. Therefore oxygen can not be transported to the rest of the body and organs. If not helped and the person having asthma do not get to breathe normally again the person can in worst case suffocate. The help needed is to get away from irritants and allergens that make the person sick, and also to give medicine at once. If the person do not get better the person should be brought to the hospital to get stronger medicine.

A little thought here is if the helper, maybe even health medical staff, wear perfume and the asthmatic person is sensitive to it, what will happen?

EI Resource on MCS: “Martin Pall is Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry and Basic Medical Sciences at Washington State University and Research Director of The Tenth Paradigm Research Group. He has focused his research efforts on multiple chemical sensitivity, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and other interconnected multi-system illnesses for a number of years and developed arguably the most complete theory for their pathophysiology. His basic hypothesis states that an initial stressor of some kind (e.g. acute pesticide exposure, viral infection, physical trauma etc) initiate a response in the body that while protective and helpful in the short-term, becomes pathological in the long-term and leads to symptoms and illness. This he proposes is what happens in MCS, the reaction to the stressor never gets switched off and the resulting biochemical dysfunction causes and perpetuates the illness.” IE-Resource.org

The Norwegian Ministry of Transport and Communications on public transportations “From 1 April 2006 The Ministry of Transport and Communications in Norway has made the law and regulations for bus companies harder when it comes to adjusting conditions for physically impared. The rules are also for those with asthma and allergy.” The Norwegian Ministry of Transport and Communications

“According to Norwegian public reports,
NOU 2005: 8 on equality and accessibility. Legal protection against discrimination on the basis of disability. Defined disability as: “Functional inhibition occurs when there is a gap between an individual’s capabilities and ambient design or function requirements in the surroundings/environment/buildings a.s.” This is also known as: The Act on prohibition against discrimination on the basis of disability (Discrimination and Accessibility Act) Lovdata.no

Professor dr. med. em. Kjell Aas on the inhibition: “Environment Inhibition is such a disability, but it is a hidden and anonymous disability that is little known. Health workers and the general public knows too little about this disability. Lack of knowledge and lack of understanding creates major problems for those affected.” … “It is known that the number of  environmental inhibited, ie asthma  analysts and allergies, is high and the possible increase.” … “The word environment inhibition is used as an umbrella term for a variety of conditions with environmental intolerance ie hypersensitivity there something in the environment lead to disease and ailments of such strength that the affected person can not stay healthy and function normally in the environment.” … “It includes both well-defined respiratory symptoms with accepted diagnosis, such as bronchial asthma and rhinoconjunctivitis” …  “Some allergies are so severe that the disease can be triggered by very little of the relevant allergens. Many people with asthma have severe hyperresponsiveness (of irritability) in the airways that provide asthma exacerbation when exposed to different kinds of air pollution.” … “Chemical environmental intolerance of others and unknown mechanisms include people with fragrance sensitivities and people with what is popularly called “indoor air illness”. They are sick from air pollution that most people tolerate well. They get headaches, dry and irritated mucous membranes, nausea, unusual fatigue, difficulty with concentration, perception and memory, and other subjective feeling of poor health. Not few feel completely knocked out with symptoms that can resemble a kind of poisoning. Symptoms can occur suddenly or after a couple of minutes and hours. They can last from several hours to several days. This includes complaints without objective signs and therefore can not be proved, but not disproved. There are large individual differences. When the environmental inhibition caused by allergies or asthma with hyperreactivity can be much objectified and you have a lot of research based knowledge. For the climate-related disease, odor intolerance and other environmental intolerance there is little relevant research and such research is very demanding.” … “Although the chemical causes are obvious, the mechanism is not well known for MCS. It is presented several theoretical explanations that in part based on known and unknown biochemical phenomena and partly to possible malfunctions in the network between the olfactory bulb and the so-called limbic system (the animal brain) in the brain.””  Professor dr. med. em. So what is the point?

Now when you got the knowledge, you got the tool to make the environment better for your fellow man.

At Rodale www.rodale.com we can read “The new research detected that the labels of popular perfumes don’t list harmful fragrance chemicals linked to sperm damage, hormone disruption which is linked to some cancers, thyroid disease, obesity, diabetes, and other serious health problems, reproductive toxicity, and allergy problems. The study was released on the heels of the President’s Cancer Panel report, which suggests environmental factors like hormone-disrupting chemicals in consumer products, plastics, and pesticides used on our food could be causing many more cases of cancer than initially believed. … The Cancer Panel report recommends that pregnant women and couples planning to become pregnant avoid exposure to hormone-disrupting chemicals due to cancer concerns. These chemicals that may play a role in cancer were found in many of the fragrances analyzed for this study. … “Secondhand scents are also a big concern. One person using a fragranced product can cause health problems for many others ” second page:  “Just because your favorite fragrance wasn’t on the list doesn’t mean it’s safe. In fact, harmful fragrance chemicals are used in thousands of products and are not listed on the label. It seems like you should have the right to know how these seemingly innocent perfumes and colognes are affecting your health. But unfortunately, manufacturers don’t have to list warnings or even the actual ingredients used in fragrance blends, on the label. And the problem isn’t limited to perfumes and body sprays. We are blasted with harmful synthetic fragrances everyday in the form of scented cleaners, hair spray and dyes, air fresheners, candles, shampoos, soaps, perfumes, and body sprays. Research is finding that many of these scented products interfere with our hormones, which regulate how our bodily systems function.” One of the coalition members for this research was the Breast Cancer Fund.  Read the whole story: http://www.rodale.com/perfume-ingredients

An ordinary day with asthma – By Annelie Molin 2011

(Scroll down for English)

Vinden driver røyken i min retning.

Fortsatt like sjuk. Ingen fred å få. Enda en slutten av en dag kom. Igjen tok jeg mine medisiner før natten. Falt i søvn.

Men for seint.

Mine lunger kramper. Jeg hoster. Holder pusten for å unngå å få mere i lungene. Medisinerer.

This is an ordinary day having asthma:
Waking up in the morning. I feel tired, sometimes thinking: have I slept enough tonight, or is it the asthma? So tired. Make myself get out of bed, and walk to the kitchen to take my inhales and allergy pills. First I take the allergy pills. Swallow it with some water. Then on an ordinary day  I take 2 inhales of Symbicort Turbuhaler 160/4.5 (that is the strongest available) and rinse my mouth with water. My doctor says I have to rinse because if not I can risk getting a fungus infection in the mouth, I do not want that, that is a backside from the Symbicort Turbuhaler. After a minute or two I can feel my breathing gets better and at the same time I feel quicker and more alert, the body gets its oxygen. On a day when I am sick and have a cold I must double the doze of Symbicort to 4 inhales every time I medicate.

After breakfast and either going to work or a day off, I get out of the house.

Now it is time to meet the rest of the world, and mingle with people and all of their habits. In a work day sitting behind the steering wheel in a bus I meet a lot of people, and most of them use perfume, and very many of them smoke. They enter the bus happy unknowing that I got asthma. They smell of perfume, some even showered in it the same morning. Some use old perfume, you can smell it from the scent of it. The clothes smell from perfume from washing liquids, deodorants and such. The smell hits my nose, and often it smells nice. A smoker tossed his cigarette outside the bus and enters it smiling while he blows the smoke out inside the bus, and some even blow the smoke in my face. Since I need oxygen like everyone else, I also breathe just as everyone else. The perfume and the smoke that just touched my nose is now going down to my lungs. Now it happens, I feel a rasping feeling from my lungs, surcling, I get heavy breathing. It gets harder to breathe, and then I feel like my lungs lock themselves in a tight position. I start to cough. Coughing is the body’s way to work harder to get air, and by getting more air I also inhale more of the other persons perfume or smoke, I get even more hard to breathe and I cough harder and harder. I have to get fresh air. Therefore I open the drivers window. I feel the fresh air coming in, and I turn my  head a bit away from the customer to restrain some of the perfume and smoke to get direct access to my lungs. I try to get in the fresh air from outside down my wind pipe, and if that do not help I hold my breath to avoid getting the customers perfume and smoke in my lungs. As fast as I can I sell the ticket and give the customer the change. When the customer leaves I in a hurry take my medicine Ventoline. 2-3 inhales. Mostly that helps, but if not I have to take some Symbicort Turbuhaler too. Then I have to rinse my mouth with water. I have no toilet onboard so I have to go out and spit the water out in the street. I feel like an idiot. I wonder what they think seeing me spitting water? Well, well, I have to, and I got a good reason. I can not do anything about that. They may think whatever they do. I do not want to get fungus infection by the medicine.

So comes next person, and next and next and next… Some use perfume, other have not sprayed perfume on them but use fragranced washing products for their clothes. They smell too and it contains the same substances as ordinary perfume and deodorant. Others use fragranced hair products and hair spray. I get sick from that too just as from perfume.

Most people do not think of that others also use perfumed products, it is like they think in their corner of the world that only they do that. But everyday all over I meet people using perfume of some sort. It is all ower.

Sitting with some friends. One roll a cigarette from Tidemann’s red tobacco. We sit inside, and my friend is always smoking outdoors. But when he rolls his cigarette the chemicals from the tobacco hits my nose, it does not smell that bad in its package, the scent and chemicals hits my lungs and the asthma situation gets going again. I move a meter away in the sofa, turn my head and try to not breathe it in. Then he go out to smoke. I can not join, I get sick from the smoke. I sit alone in the sofa staring at the wall.

I go to the mall to shop. I enter a fashion store and think of buying a sweater. I walk around in the store and find what I am looking for. I search for the cashier and find it. Next to it the perfume section is located. People standing there trying perfume on, they spray perfume from the bottles. I can feel the scent from far away. Cashier is only a step away. I look at my sweater, and then at the perfume stand. I know that if I go there I will get sick. With a sad sigh I put the sweater back on the shelf where I found it and leave the store. No sweater for me because of perfume. I’ll go have a cup of coffee instead.

I go to the coffee shop. Sit among a lot of people. Many have dressed up to meet with friends. Nice. Sad thing is that they also dress up in perfume. I drink my coffee. Feel the infection on me by the perfume. If it get to bad, I have to leave here too.

Meeting with a friend on town. We stroll around. It is a sunny day and my friend suggest a coffee or a beer in the sun. Ok, I say, and think to myself that this is nice. At the same time I get worried over smokers. I look around to see if there is any clear table, a table without smokers sitting around it. Ah! There is one! We sit and order our drinks, and talks. Half way through the beer and the coffee the person at the table next to me lights a cigarette. Wind drives the smoke in my direction. I feel the asthma strike my health again, just as in the bus. We sit outside, the smoker is allowed to smoke there, still I get sick. It gets bad, and I have to leave.

We pay for our drinks and take a stroll on the docks along the canal. Some smokers walk in front of me. I have to sick- sack to avoid their fumes, still it hits my lungs. I get sick again. Silently I suggest to my friend to take another road in hope of there is no smokers. We go there. It is ok for a while, so comes that smoke again. I go around it to avoid it.

We want to enter the mall. It is not allowed to smoke inside the mall so people stand in front of the entrance for the “last smoke”, smoking them up. The smoke is thick in front of the doors. I get scared and worried thinking I must pass that. I pass it, hold my breath to avoid the smoke because if I do not I will get sick again. If there are to many standing there in front of the door I maybe can not hold my breath long enough. Then I get sick again.

Evening comes and an idea of going to the bar comes up. Idea mostly not coming from me, but I am not negative to go out if I am asked. We want to enter the front door. In front of the pub in the line of people also wanting to get in people smoke all over. There are a lot of people waiting. Almost as many are smoking. All of that smoke goes down to my lungs. I get sick (same way as I told before) and I have to leave the que and let my friend que for me. I stand alone far away from the others. Wonder what they are talking about? I feel very lonely.

We get in the pub, get a table, music is loud and I can barely hear the others speak. Guy next to me at the neighbouring table leans to me to talk. I can smell the smokers breath. I feel my lungs getting tight, and I get trouble breathing. No one in the bar is smoking inside, but it does not matter. I get sick from the chemicals in his breath. I excuse myself and turns to my friends instead. Maybe he was nice, but I prefer saving my health. That was one possible friend gone.

Time to go to bed. But first I must take my Symbicort Turbuhaler 160/4,5. Take two inhales (four inhales if I got a cold), brush my teeth. And then ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. Sometimes I do not sleep so well, and sometimes I even wake up cause of my asthma. I have experiences waking up by an asthma attack. My lungs were shokeing me, and I woke up. Lungs tight, did not get air. Had to hurry to the kitchen to take medicines.

A new Monday, a new week at work. People enters the bus with their perfume and smoke. I sell tickets like last week, and the week before, and the week before that… I continue to get sick from their perfume and smoke. They lean towards me to be able to talk in all the noise in the bus, and again and again the smokers breath triggers my asthma, and again and again I get sick.

After work I need to go shopping. I need some food and some washing products, cleaning products and hygiene products. I take a shopping cart and stroll down the shelfs. Take my juice, bread, margarine, milk, dinner, fruit and vegetables. So far so good. Now time to enter the shelfs to buy washing and cleaning products. Here is a lot to choose from, all sorts of brands and most of them are full of perfume, color and chemicals. And in the middle of it I find the products I can use without getting sick. Only problem is that to buy them I have to stand in the middle of all the chemicals I get sick from. Even though they are in their packages the concentration of the perfumes and chemicals is so strong I get sick anyway.  My lungs getting tighter and I get sick again. Why can they not have a special section on its own for those products. I get angry, I have asked them so may times! Sometimes I even literally run in to grab the product I want and then run out again. I feel like an idiot doing it. I look around to see if anyone saw me do that? What would they think?

Same thing happens when I must buy shower gel, soap, shampoo and conditioner. All are standing located in the middle of all the brands I get sick from, and I have to enter there in risk getting sick only to buy what I do not get sick from. May I ask.. How stupid is that?

Evening comes and I get a phone call. A friend ask if I would like to go to the restaurant? I get very glad and says Yes! I’ll pick you up in half an hour. : ) I park outside and wait for him. When he enters the car I smile and say hello, and in the same second I get an asthma attack. He forgot I have asthma and had sprayed aftershave all over him. The aftershave was so strong, the fragrance filled the whole car. I had to open all the windows same time as I was coughing badly trying to get air, and take my medicine. Did not help. It was cold outside and we drove with the windows open. My friend froze but I could not close the windows, because if I did I would get really sick. I can not sit in a car with all that perfume, and it was a 15 minutes drive to the restaurant. I had to have the windows open, but even with the windows open I got sick even if it made it a tiny bit better. Only other option would have been to let him out of the car and let him walk home. At the restaurant I was sick all evening. The aftershafe perfume reached me all across the table, and my health declined all evening. I tried to medicate, it helped a bit but it never really ended. It was even possible to hear it on my talking. My breathing made my voice sound strange and raspy. After a while I needed to visit the ladies room. Both to get to the toilet, to get a break from the perfume and also to take my medicine. Took my Symbicort Turbuhaler medicine (my Ventoline was not strong enought to fight it) and needed to rinse my mouth. I got in to the ladies room and a wall of perfume in form of washing agents and air-freshener met me.  I just took medicine and needed to rinse my mouth, and now I again got breathing problems because of the cleaners and air-freshener. From the ashes in to the fire. Rinsed my mouth and then quick out again, back to the table and all the perfume. Still sick.

Yet another end of a day came. Again I took my medicines before night. Fell a sleep.  I was not well.

One time I was going to the shop with a friend. We took my car from my house. It was summer and hot and I had my windows open. Fresh air came in the car, and we talked a lot. It was nice. I drove in the tunnel on the main road. The tunnel is rather long. I forgot to close my windows. The tunnel was filled with road dust and smog, it was so thick it was hard to see other vehicles. I got sick. I quickly closed the windows to avoid getting even more of the poisonous stuff in the car. I had trouble breathing. I told my friend I got sick. Tried to find my inhaler. It was not there. I had forgotten it at home! Oh no! Not good! I felt the lungs getting worse. Only a short way to the store now. Only quick in and quick out and then home, I thought. We shopped. But my friend wanted to look at this and look at that. I felt frustrated. I had trouble breathing and for every minute without medicine I would either get worse or stay as bad. I started to get a bit irritated, I told him I was sick, but I did not want to make a scene. So I tried to be patient. Finally we could go, and I asked him to drive. I did not want to drive in that condition. We went home. And I hurried to find my medicine. It took a while before I got better. I even had to use my Optichamber (product info) it was that bad. Then we continued working on the car. There were some small stuff to fix. Was it the seats in the back or the radio? I do not remember. Nice to get it done anyway.

Early in the morning, I was going to work. It was a fresh and clear day with fresh air. I strolled towards the car standing at the parking lot. Then I heard hurrying steps in the growl behind me. It was my neighbour that was late for work. She was in a great hurry to reach the bus. I said I could give her a lift. I am driving past the hospital where you work, I said. She got very happy. We got in the car. In the same second she closed the door I felt the scent of her perfume. My lungs reacted to it. Suddenly I kind of regretted my kindness to ask to give her a lift.  But now she had for sure missed the bus and I could not dare to ask her to step out of the car. I opened the windows without telling her I got sick, and took some medicine. I kept quiet about it. I did not want to embarrass her. But I sadly think I will think twice before giving her a ride again. If so she must go wash off that perfume. Sucks getting sick just because one is kind.

Coming home from work and make myself dinner. Put potatoes in the pan and let it boil.  The lamb shops I marinated since yesterday, the thought of it make me hungry. I put the meat in pan to fry it, it is fizzing in the pan. The cookery fumes  seek its way out of the pan. The cookery fan is on and tries to take away most of it. But some of it slips out and ends in my lungs. Lungs get tight again and I get sick. I have to step away from the stove. Medicates. I stand a bit away from the stove while it is frying and cooking. Go there to turn the food so it get ready on both sides. Dinner ready. Coughing. Now it is time to eat.

Dinner was fabulous! But still coughing from cooking it. Now it is time to clean the pan. I go to the kitchen. Add hot water to the pan and add som washing up liquid, just a tiny bit. I take the brush and start to clean it. The damp and fumes from the pan reach my nose, it wanders down my wind pipe and reach the lungs. Again I get sick. From the ashes in the fire. It is the hot steam, the fumes from the grease, fat and spices. My lungs tighten. I cough. Keep my breath. Medicate. Keep my face away from the steam. Finally I am done. Luckily I got a dishwasher machine so I do not have to do all the dishes by hand. Now time for some relaxation. Watch a movie.

I have cleared my home from perfumed washing products, perfumed cleaning products and hygiene products to help my health. I buy perfume free. At home it is a perfume and smoke free zone. At least here I do not get sick from smoke and perfume. Well, that is as long as visitors are not using perfume and smoke coming here.

Both my home and car is a perfume and smoke free zone.

Sometimes I think of getting a boyfriend. Sometimes I feel it would be nice having someone. But then I have the problem with my asthma. I can not have a man who smoke. I would get sick from his breath and kiss. Also he must not use perfume, I get sick from that too. So now surely more than half the population is gone. So what is left when sorted all of those out? On top of it after sorted all the “poisonous” out, I must find someone who match me among those. And where to find him?

What a wonderful world it would be without perfume and smoke. Days without illness! And maybe even days without medicine? Well, at least days with not as much medicines, and less asthma attacks. Every time I get ill in asthma I must medicate. I get ill often and therefore I use a lot of medicines. If I am exposed to less chemicals and irritants I get less sick and use less medicine.

Most people think that if one is “allergic or something” it is just to take the medicine, and then problem is solved. That is not the right answer. The medicines help, but it do not cure the illness, it only take some of the pain away. Only real help is to remove the stuff that make an allergic, asthmatic, sensitive person ill. And what make it worse is that if one have to medicate to stay a bit more healthy because one get sick from external exposure, is that one get bombed with all the stuff one get sick from all day long from so many sources that one have to use so very much medicine that one get side effects from the medicines like shakes, the heart beats faster, and pressure on the body functions. That is really a big struggle to have in addition to breathing problems.

It would really help if there were no smoke and perfume in the world, because so many uses it daily all over the area everywhere, even all over the world. Where ever one go there it is.

It is hard for me to clear the rest of the world from perfumes and tobacco smoke and other awful chemicals so I can stay more healthy. This you must do for me, you who uses it.

My Allergy

In addition to my asthma  I got some kind of allergy. They discovered that at the same time as they discovered I got occupational asthma in 2007. But they could not put a finger on what I am allergic to, I am sensitive to so many chemicals it was impossible to pick one. The work finding the specific allergen was to hard, since there are thousands of chemicals. But probably it got something to do with what I am asthmatic to, I was told. (View about asthma: info sheet and videochemicals)

Anyway.. I got medicine for it, antihistamine, and that I must take everyday. Sometimes when I forget to take the allergy medicine I get rather quickly reminded. It starts itching all over the body and I get red blushy areas where it itches.

It happened once when I went to my sister for the holidays one year. I forgot to take my medicine with me, actually I forgot all of my bag with shampoo, conditioner, shower cream, brush, tooth-brush and everything. And went 1100 km by car to visit my sister. I found out I forgot my bag half way there. To late to turn to get it…

And what is the problem with that? Well, besides that I must have special products for showering and such, and I had to go shopping to maybe find some products I could use without getting sick because of my asthma, my sister lives in another country than me and during the holidays most stores are closed.  It is also harder to get help with the doctor and pharmacy. And my subscription for my medicine is not valid in the country where my sister live. So to get my medicine I had to go to the emergency hospital and wait for hours to see a doctor (on Christmas day) to get a new subscription and then go and try to find an open pharmacy before I could take my antihistamine. And it took hours. And before I made it I itched so bad all over my body that I thought I was about to go nuts over it. It itched from top to toe, my sculp, all body, and even under my feet, and my hand palms.

This happened today too. I forgot to take the pills for two days. A really bad idea. I went to a restaurant with a friend and we had a very nice evening with lots to talk about.

During the afternoon I got my reminder. And did I have my allergy medicine with me? No. Of course not. They were resting on my kitchen counter at home.

I had a really itchy evening, doing my best to ignore it. Well at home, it got my medicine and the itch stopped. During those itches my body feels all stressed out, and it itches really badly all over. But after taking the allergy medicine it gets rest. It all goes away and everything feels ok and normal after a while.

It is absolutely no fun at all when it happens. I actually wonder if this is common? Or am I the only one getting this problem not taking my antihistamines?
