Luftforurensning

Air pollution

So I went to the bathroom again (one actually have to), it was yesterday, this time at the mall. I did not spot it at first because it has the same color as the wall, but thought it was detergent or something I smelled. AMFI pollute the air and are making it unfit for asthmatics. I of course got sick from it, and my medication bag was in the car at work when I took the bus here, all I have is a small inhaler. What happens is inhaling the chemicals from the pump makes the lungs inflamed, cramps and tight and I do not get air. I just hope it will not be as bad as last time. I went to the center office and complained. I need to take medicine often in the coming hours to keep your lungs healthy or it will come back and worsen.

I had to inhale asthma medicine in large quantities long afterwards. Luckily this time around it was on the wall where you wash your hands and not inside the toilet stall so I was exposed shorter time than the last, I think therefore I do not have to be sick for three weeks this time. Nevertheless, this I do not need, I do not benefit from being exposed to such, one must be able to go to the toilet and other places without getting sick. Using such devices is unacceptable.

This is Tork’s product. 😠👎

Frisk luft, hva er det? – Fresh air, what is it?

Bli parfymefri!

The difference clean air make

I do not mean to diminish food allergy, but this is the reality for all having lung disease in this scent maniac world.

Nice smell you said? It is chemicals, not air, fragrancing is to add substances to the air that has nothing to do there. In daily communication it is called pollution.

In addition to breathing difficulties scented air causes headaches, migraine, runny pinful eyes and nose, cough, and more.

We are constructed to breathe air, nothing else.

We can’t stop breathing to protect ourselves until you decide to stop polluting the air. GO FRAGRANCE-FREE!

Fungerer det alltid på ren vilje? – Does pure will always work?

(Scroll down for English)

Ta astma for eksempel.

Is it always enough with sheer determination?

It is often one hears about people with disabilities who manages the most amazing things on sheer willpower, they do not give up, and conducts. It is inspiring and shows both courage and determination to master. An example of these is Jessica Cox. She has no arms and learned how to fly a airplane.

People who have disabilities and show all they can is a source of inspiration for both the disabled and fully functioning human beings, and they truly deserve it. But the backside of the coin is that those who can not do such things are in a way a little looked down upon or felt sorry for. Yes not all and not always, but if you do not show the attitude when you are usually seen as negative. But is this true?

Take for example asthma. Many struggle with pollution in the air from perfume, scented candles and ordinary candles, incense, fragrance and strong smelling hairspray, body spray, fragrance deodorants, so called air-freshener whether it is scent blocks, manual or equipment that pumps out scent on timers etc., tobacco, fragrance detergents, fabric softeners, cleaning agents, etc. In a society where doing things on sheer will, overcoming issues and success doing so is seen as heroic, makes also a climate where if you say it does not go then you become somewhat looked down upon or seen as negative.

Asthma is recognized as a handicap by the WHO, EFA, and LDO, when it is a physical illness that creates obstacles and hinders in everyday life. Many people who have disabilities can overcome their handicap on sheer will, but does this go with asthma?

I very much admire ladies like Jessica Cox and everyone else with her who manage to overcome their handicap and do things anyway, just like everyone else does. At the same time I get a little sad and conscious of my own handicap as I can not be blamed for it and that I can not rule over it.

A person who has asthma (or other sensitivities that responds to the same conditions) that go into a room where it is used fragrance marketing, s.c. air-freshener, perfume on people and clothing, fragrance hair sprays, body sprays, fragrance deodorants, scented candles, incense, strong detergents and perfumed cleaners, etc. may enter and reside in a room where all this is the sheer determination? No, it is not possible, not even with medication, at least not those of this group who have sensitivity to these substances in the air. Some are not even helped by medicine. Yes some have more sensitivity than others, others have  less, but common is that one can not get in a room where it is impure air. To remain in this environment of pure will like other disabled people can overcome their handicap is not possible for many people with asthma and allergies, it does not matter how much you want to, it doesn’t work.

It’s not about will, I can stand outside and would like be with, it’s not about positivity or negativity, I could go and certainly I can go because my legs works and it is entirely possible to get in, but if I do then I become so sick of air pollution in the room that I have to get out right away. It has nothing to do with negativity, nor have it anything to do with medicine to take because I have all the medicine for my asthma I need, it’s just not enough. I shows that it actually is not enough to have the will, that it is not enough to want to and just do, because I want to a lot but there is no help in it, the lungs do not care the least what I want, the lungs they do what they want regardless of what I want or would like to  participate. The medicine only helps to keep me healthy as long as I avoid the substances that is not air.

Therefore, it is important that you help so that the air is clean and free from these substances, because then I and all others with the same disability can be everywhere!

I and You only need clean air.

ps This is probably true for all other allergies as well, I guess that after what other allergy sufferers have told me, so do not meet those who are allergic with “- Take your medicine!” or “- I do as I like!” because then you are to make people hurt. And such behavior is seen as very negative by those who are allergic.

~Honesty is not negativity ~

World Health Organization (WHO): Global surveillance, prevention and control of CHRONIC RESPIRATORY DISEASES.

Ban indoors scenting of air

From the article:

“Fragrances are an obstacle for people who are allergic / sensitive to perfume.

It causes difficulty staying in various public indoor environments because of other people’s perfume / fragrance. Examples (not to be limited to) of such environments, shops, workplaces, schools, health care, cultural life and in public transport.

Swedish Asthma and Allergy Association want to pay attention to scent hypersensitivity it is a big problem for so many.

The union now requires scenting in indoor public areas is prohibited.

Today there are companies dedicated to the scenting stores, shopping centers and hotels – environments where our members can not enter and therefore not be allowed in.

Fragrance hypersensitivity, also called sensory hyperreactivity / SHR (or in English MCS), is relatively common among adults – slightly more than six percent meet the criteria for medical diagnosis.

Far more, about 33 percent say themselves that they have some kind of odor hypersensitivity, read reaction to for example fragrance chemicals off gassing to the air.

There is no medical treatment that cures odor hypersensitivity, but those affected are obliged to avoid smells and are therefore dependent on ambient considerations.

Fragrance Hypersensitivity be due to a “over stimulation” in the sensory nervous system. Common symptoms include respiratory problems (coughing, shortness of breath, hoarseness, phlegm), irritation of the eyes, nose, or throat or more general symptoms (headache, dizziness, fatigue, sweating).

Symptoms may remind you of asthma or allergy, but has other causes. Symptoms may persist for several days and lead to sick leave even if you are only exposed to perfume a short while. ” svt.se

Basically it’s already prohibited in Norway when it violate against The Discrimination and Accessibility Act.

E-mail from the Equality and Discrimination Ombudsman LDO to Alena Jula (published with permission by Alena Jula):

“Perfume Allergy and other types environmental inhibitions are regarded as a form of disability protected Discrimination and Accessibility Act.
The freedom to function in society should be equal for all. Also measures for preventing allergies, including perfume-free products is covered by the act. This is particularly important in public and private enterprises where people of different reasons need to go and be there / reside. With discrimination is meant direct and indirect discrimination.” The Equality and Anti-discrimination ombudsman LDO, Norway

Prohibit perfuming / fragrance setting of indoor air in Norway, Sweden, yes throughout Europe.

Reacting with illness in scented and fragrance added indoor air it also applies to asthma and allergies, so then you have to count higher numbers than stated in the article. I have asthma and can not tolerate fragrancing of indoor air like mentioned in the article, it is not only chemically intolerant who can not tolerate it. It is no fun having to flee a toilet when one are in need because it is mounted a scent machine on the wall, or having to go out of a store or other locality because them have scented indoor air. Do they not want customers?

“Asthma and allergies can be debilitating and can cause loss of life.” Norwegian Labour Inspectorate 2009

It is not just these and us struggling with it who supports a ban.

Asthma and allergies can be debilitating and can cause loss of life span due to disability in lung health. It is recognized as a disability by the UN, WHO and Equality and Anti-Discrimination Ombud (LDO). People with asthma and allergies that have hyperreactive airways (not to be confused with hyperactive) agains fragrance / scent / perfume in the environment are not adequately safeguarded in society as regards availability because that human lives has a so called alleged right to use things that make others sick, this is despite the fact that people with asthma and allergies have a legal protection of the Act prohibiting discrimination on grounds of disability (Discrimination and Accessibility Act), the law on the environment and the protection of clean air etcetera: Regulations on environmental health, the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the World Health Organization (WHO) Global surveillance, prevention and control of chronic RESPIRATORY DISEASE.

People violates the law on the wanting for fashion, increasing sales, getting customers to stay longer in stores, etc., and at the same time so do one exclude thousands of people each year from participating and use the same places. It provides increased illness, increased sick absence, increased costs for both society and the private individual concerned, it gives personal suffering, there are even people who are receiving disability benefits because those can not be in society, work, and do all the things that others may when the air is polluted with fragrances. Here there is much to save for all, both for the individual and society. By prohibiting the addition of perfumes and fragrance so called fragrance marketing and else fragrancing of air, read perfume substances in indoor air are people healthier, and community saving large sums of money when those sensitive can move in society, can work, and there are fewer sick leaves, and less on disabilitiy benefits.

Why continue to authorize the use and selling of products that damage health and costing society money? What is most important accessibility, health and the environment or the right superficial glamour?

Why #airfreshener and #scentedcandles can wreck your health

Putting a wiff of danger in the air

Fresh air what is that? some like us to believe that it is a chemical blend of hundreds of chemicals in mixes to make a scent to lure our nose and brain that there is something pleasant going on, while the truth is that fresh air is mother natures own blend created to make us live a healthy life, and it does not contain any fragrance at all. It is color free and scent free.

Faximilie Daily Mail 3 September 2015 “Chemical sprays, plug-ins and gels for home perfuming are hugely popular but investigators warn that they can include an array of hazardous substances which may cause lung damage and tumours, interfere with our hormones and cause such lifelong problems as asthma. Last month, a study involving Public Health England’s Centre for Radiation, Chemical and Environmental Hazards, warned that plug-in air fresheners produce ‘considerable’ levels of formaldehyde: described by the US government’s National Toxicology Program as a known ‘human carcinogen’. It is most closely linked with cancers of the nose and throat and at the very least, it can also cause sore throats, coughs, scratchy eyes and nosebleeds. It is not the only chemical to fear in air fresheners. Other basic ingredients include petroleum products and such chemicals as p-dichlorobenzene, which hardly bring to mind summer meadows, vanilla pods and sultry spices.” Daily Mail

If you want fresh air you should open a window.

It is also found that air fragranceing can harm your baby even before it is born so that the child get lung problems and expericnce breathing problems.

“In 2013, after a study of more than 2,000 pregnant women, the International Journal of Public Health reported that women who used air fresheners in their homes were significantly more likely to have babies that suffered from wheezing and lung infections.” Daily Mail

The use of air fragrance can also cause other health issues like nausea, headaches, migraine, depression and many more.

“A 2007 study also found that using air fresheners as little as once a week can raise the risk of asthma in adults. The same report found that the risk of developing asthma was up to 50 per cent higher in people who had been exposed to air-freshener sprays.

Many air fresheners also contain substances called volatile organic compounds (VOCs), characterised by their low boiling points which mean they form vapour or gas at room temperature. Experts warn that these can increase the risk of asthma.

Another common ingredient is naphthalene, which has been shown to cause tissue damage and cancer in the lungs of rats and mice in laboratory studies.

Not all of the ingredients used in the actual perfumes are fully listed and critics claim that these can each be made up of several hundred different chemicals.

In March, a team of experts tested six scented candles, with such aromas as clean cotton, strawberry and kiwi fruit.

Behind their delicious labels, however, lay a host of potentially dangerous industrial chemicals, including formaldehyde at levels which, with long-term exposure, are known to raise the risk of respiratory problems and cancer.

The candles also gave off significant levels of VOCs. Furthermore, the study warned that you don’t even need to light such candles because simple evaporation will enable them to pollute your home. Most scented candles are made with paraffin, which brings other problems. The oil by-product gives off ultra-fine soot particles containing acetone, benzene and toluene, usually seen in diesel emissions, and known carcinogens.” Daily Mail

And if you think insence is any safer…

“Burning incense releases tiny chemical particles which can become trapped in our lungs, causing potentially dangerous inflammatory reactions. The research also found that incense particles from commonly used ingredients agarwood and sandalwood are more toxic to our cells’ DNA than tobacco smoke.” Daily Mail

Perhaps it is time to stop this habit of using air scenting and fragrancing in all?

“Air is the Earth’s atmosphere. Air around us is a mixture of  78.09% nitrogen, 20.95% oxygen, 0.93% argon, 0.039% carbon dioxide, and small amounts of other gases. There is an average of about 1% water vapour. It is the clear gas in which living things live and breathe. It has an indefinite shape and volume. It has no color or smell. It has mass and weight. It is a matter as it has mass and weight. Air creates atmosphere pressure. There is no air in the vacuum and cosmos.” Wikipedia

We need air tor breathe and live, not fragrance chemicals.

Help someone with asthma

What to do?

You can actually make a huge difference for everyone having asthma so they become more healthy and get a better life. Yes You!

What is asthma?

How to recognize asthma?

I know this person

If you know the person, ask what the person can not tolerate, allergies and other stuff they get sick from. When a person have asthma even things they are not allergic to can make their airways kick back and make trouble in form of an asthma attack. When you know what the person get sick from keep this away from the person at all times. If it is something you use yourself. STOP! even if you think in your own mind that it must be a silly thing.

I do not know this person

Around you there are many people who have asthma. One count that about 20-25 % of the population in a country have asthma. Worldwide (numbers from 2011) 300 million people have asthma, in Europe (counting from 2014) approximately 30 million people have asthma, and it is estimated that around 2036 about 400 million people will have asthma worldwide (information from World Health Organization WHO, Ginasthma.com, and EFA). In Norway for example there is in 2015 about 5 million people. 20 % out of 5 million people (counting low) is 1 million people who have asthma (5.000.000 x 0,20 = 1.000.000). How many live in your country? Count how many ( x million people times 0,xx equals?) So you see out of the hundred of people you see around you about 20 of those have asthma. And that is if we count low with 20 %. That is 20 people! So what can you do for all of those?

The nature of asthma is like this:

A person can be allergic to different things that causes asthma attacks, and in addition there are substances that causes irritation to the airways in the lungs causing asthma attacks even if the person is not allergic to them. Asthma comes in 4 different levels from mild to severe. Asthma can be deadly. To live you must be able to breathe, and the nature of asthma is trouble breathing. Think about this when you travel in the room where the public have access, and also in your home if your friends or family have asthma.

Common triggers for asthma:

  • Tobacco smoke
  • Vaping – some but not all react to vaping
  • Fragrance (both male and female scents) – both from the bottle and added to other products.
  • Incense
  • Scented candles and candles
  • Air fragrance, also known as signature scent
  • Airfreshener – what you use to hide bad odor or to fragrance the room
  • Animals – most common is fur and birds. But remember that it is not only the fur and the feathers that is source for the allergy, saliva and skin dandruff too.
  • Food – most commonly known is nuts and peanuts and that is both the whole nut or added to food and oils. Nut allergy can be fatal both taken in and airborne. But even milk, egg, fish and other foods can give such reaction both by eating it and airborne.
  • Exhaust from vehicles, both diesel and gasoline, and maybe others. Gas – actually most people have it bad from gas, but people with asthma have it even worse since they do not tolerate even smaller amounts.
  • Gassing from stuff – it can be gas from filling petrol, diesel, oil, alcohols, solvents, new plastic, cleaning products, ammonia, among many other things.
  • Dust of various kinds, not only house dust.
  • Pollen
  • Flowers
  • Grass
  • Evaporates

So how can you make the world better for a person having asthma to avoid the person get an asthma attack? It is actually rather easy.

  • Do not smoke or vape around other people. Smoke outside away from entrances and ask before you light a cigarette or e-cigarette.
  • Cut out the fragrance and fragranced products, only use fragrance free. The emissions, pollution, from fragrance and fragrance products cause asthma attacks. If you use fragrance and someone tells you to stay clear it is not to be rude it is to stay healthy.  Take the hint and go fragrance free.
  • Do not use incense, it pollutes the air. A sensitive person gets asthma attacks from it (even outdoors). If a person tells you not to use it, it is not to be rude, it is not to be against your religion, it is to stay healthy.
  • Do not use candles and scented candles since they emit a lot of invisible chemicals to the air that triggers an asthma attack. And the smoke from putting them out is just as bad.
  • Airfresheners, products giving away scent and signature scent for marketing is a big no! no! it goes under the same as Fragrance.
  • Turn the engine off as soon as you have stopped the car.
  • Think of fire smoke and other kinds of smoke, gas and off-gassing as pollution and keep such away from others. Ask before you do something that can emit to the air.
  • Avoid if possible to bring animals where there are a lot of people. A rather big percent of the 20 % of the population is allergic. That also goes for your clothes if  you have been around animals. Change your clothes to allergen free clothes and wash yourself.
  • Flowers are lovely, unfortunately many is allergic, so if possible try to keep the flowers packed in during transport home. And if you are going to give someone flowers, ask if they are allergic to it before buying it. Maybe something else is a better gift?
  • Dust and dirty – Keep the place clean from dust, but use as less chemicals as possible to get as clean air as possible. Cleaning and washing agents goes under the same as fragrance products, it causes asthma attacks. Go fragrance free here!
  • Pollen, yes it is a natural thing and not your fault. What you can do is to think of all that is allergic to it, do not brush or dust it off indoors, and if someone tells you to hand your coat outside it is not to be rude it is to stay healthy.
  • Food – Avoid eating where other people travel the society. Of cource you can eat in a restaurant or a cafe’, but avoid eating other places. Rather many get sick from airborne food emits, and when you eat you might get it on handles, seating, doors and so on, and the next one get it on their hands and then in their mouth for example (grown and children).

Remember that things that emits and evaporates to the air can be for sensitive people as pollution regardless of the smell. It is not the smell that hurts it is what is in the smell. We are constructed to breathe air, nothing else. If someone tells you – No!, it is not to be rude, it is to stay healthy. Avoid to have things that evaporate and emits to the air where the public is. Make the air as fresh as possible without additives, additives that is for all of us sensitive nothing more than pollution. Maybe it is a new way of thinking for you, but regardless what you think of it, it is all sensitive persons reality. If you adopt the way of thinking you can make the air cleaner and fresher for us all to breathe. In that way you can help us stay healthy. In polluted air we get sick, in fresh air we are healty. It is that simple. Have a nice day. / Annelie

#Evaluation of #IndoorAir

“No evaluation of indoor air quality and its impact on health can be complete without considering the effects of the widespread of fragrance in multiple products used on a daily basis in homes, workspaces, and other public places. The ubiquitous exposure to poorly studied fragrance chemicals has resulted in escalating voluntary and involuntary exposures to unknown substances which contrary to public assumption, have not been evaluated by regulatory agencies for safety to the general public, children, the elderly, and other sensitive populations. Exposure starts before birth from fragrance chemicals in mothers’ bodies (1) and continues with ingestion of mother’s milk. (2) Products for infants and children are scented often with materials known to cause allergies (3) and persist in body tissues. Children and infants are also exposed to every scented product used in the household. An infant held close is breathing in fragrance from clothes washed in highly scented detergents and laundry products, perfumes and colognes, shampoo, and other scented products used by the caregiver transferring to the child’s skin, hair, and clothes. Exposure continues throughout life. Users of scented products are often not aware of the continued presence of the products they use and are rarely aware of the intensity of the scents.” Continue reading

Sick from scented products – Annelie

I had a small article in the Allers Magazine, a woman Magazine. Please, scroll Down for English translation.

image

Many become sick from scented products and fragrance.

Sick by fragrance and scent

“I am a bus driver and I get sick from all kinds of use of fragrance and scented Products, and Chemicals. If someone comes in the bus using fragrance or aftershave I have to open all doors and Windows to air it out, and then take medicines.  If the odor is strong enough it happens I can not help the customer. Someone says “It is only to change line of occupation!” but it actually have not mening at all what I do for a living since fragrance are all over in the world. Everywhere in society there are People who have to SCREAM their precense using fragrance and Chemical Products. There is something wrong going around when People have to become sick from others vanity.
Another thing again is the scenting of indoor air. Scent is added to the air by scented cleaning and washing agents, scented candles, inscense, a.s. often used in shops, malls, restaurants and so on. Imagine you want to go out With friends, and you arrive to a Place where everyone else but you can enter. A restaurant visit can be ruined by scented air, and scented air at the toilets. Since the air is scented you can not use the room or the toilet. And at a road trip you can not use the bathroom at the gasoline station since there is mounted a fragrance pump or other scent Device in the toilet room.  To get ill from this is not a joke.
Today there are both unscented Products for clothes and fabrics, house and buildings, body and hair, so why not use it?
I will give you some fresh numbers from WHO. The numbers show that 30 million People in Europe struggle With asthma! That is something for you to think about before you add fragrance to Your person and by doing this destroys the environment for all of those who are sensitive.”

Until now I have never refused anyone to travel, it does not mean I have not suffered, but I have tried to solve it in another way: the window open all year round whatever the weather, hold my breath when someone has anything on themselves that I get sick from and sell tickets like in lightning speed so they can leave and take a seat, and take lots of medication. It’s an unfortunate situation and many may think that I should not work. But I refuse to be home on disability, I refuse to give up. Another job could be as bad because there are perfumed people everywhere in society, and anyone who takes the bus arrives at stores and offices. Jobs in dusty space is not possible. It is easy to believe things about things you know nothing about and there are many places that are not likely to work when you have it like me, I just do the best you can.

Have a Nice day! Go Fragrance Free!

Push for a More Fragrance-Free Environment – Marie Schmidt – latimes.com

Testimony of Marie Schmidt of Arcadia latimes.com

Qoute

“I start sneezing and my nose starts running the minute I smell them,” says Schmidt, whose respiratory system goes on red alert at the least whiff of scented products.

“It’s sort of like cigarette smoking,” she complains. “They are invading my privacy.”

Whether she realizes it or not, Schmidt is part of what could be the next big nationwide battle that pits individual rights against public health concerns: the push for fragrance-free environments.

“Ten years from now it will be politically incorrect to wear perfumes in public,” predicts Paul Imperiale, disability coordinator for the mayor’s office in San Francisco. That city’s fragrance-free plan, drafted in 1990, was never enacted.

With Americans now using perhaps a dozen scented personal-care products each day, fragrance foes’ basic argument is this: your right to wear these products ends where my chemical sensitivities begin.

Beyond perfume, activists for fragrance-free environments are targeting restaurant bathrooms with those pungent deodorizers, office buildings that use pesticides and astringent cleaning products, and the neighborhood mall, whose host of synthetic odors assault the nostrils, especially around the holidays.

“We are putting so much into our environment that people are getting sick. I don’t think it’s a matter of personal rights now, I think it’s a matter of everyone’s health,” says Joan Ripple, a consultant to state Sen. Milton Marks, who chaired a Senate Judiciary subcommittee on the rights of the disabled.”

“In public policy terms, this could be defined as an issue of handicapped access, just like having a wheelchair ramp into a church or public building,” Brown says. “To have services that aren’t fragrance-free is to deny services to a group of people whose population is growing every day.”

End Qoute

I should say I actually is about personal rights. The personal right to not have to get ill from others vanity, egoism and shallowness.

And you do not need to have MCS to suffer from other Peoples habits, you only need astma and allergy to get ill from it.

I think the fewer would serve nuts to a person allergic and sensitive to nuts, so why do you force Your fragrance on us who get ill from it? You invade and hurt Our Health. Stop it now!

The scent mania makes ill personell

Airport smelled too good – staff sick

They had installed designer fragrance in the Tax Free area at Landvetter airport in December 2012 and it became too strong. Several of the staff got sick. Now the case is reported to the Swedish Work Environment Authority.

They installed four scent machines inside the duty-free shop. The machines went on maximum power and a risk assessment was not made.

After several of the staff had problems with dry eyes, nasal congestion, and nosebleeds hit Swedish Labour Inspection Authority alarm. Two of them were forced to take asthma medications.

Now, the employer must arrange health track and also arrange for odor source either be removed or the ventilation is enhanced.

Source: Expressen.se

I must say it is madness to install such scent puffing machines. It makes the area unavailable to those who already have asthma, allergy and sensitivity, and it also makes those not sensitive become ill. If someone have ones developed asthma in adult age it is for life. Those People here are maybe forced to change occupation now after the employer have gone over the limit of what their bodies can stand.

I myself can not enter a perfume store at all. And even less a store using fragrance marketing. A store with both perfume and scent marketing together is like hell ten times.

We are designed to Breathe air not fragrance.

NYHETER!

Parfymen inneholder allergenen citronellol.

Økning i ‘duftfeller’

NEWS! Scented shops are dangerous for employees and customers health

Shops are increasingly using perfume to lure customers. Unions follows the case of Abercrombie & Fitch with interest.

A job in a shop or plenty of visits to certain shops could give staff and customers allergy and breathing difficulties.

Authorities, experts and organizations, fear this because the use of the so-called scent marketing has increased in the last three years.

The Danish Working Environment Authority will not comment on specific cases, but chief Anne Therese Schultz-Petersen says that Labour Inspection Authority has started working with this problem.

“We have been aware of the case of scent marketing for some time and focus on it. We respond especially if there are allergens, which obviously is not good for the employees to be in, “she says, citing that there may be allergenic substances in perfumes, spraying out in stores.

“Overall, it is unnecessary exposure to workers when using perfume with such substances,” said Anne Therese Schultz-Petersen.

Many fragrances can cause allergies The U.S. clothing chain Abercrombie & Fitch is known for its extensive use of perfume in stores worldwide as Politiken.dk described on Tuesday, the Danish Labour Inspection Authority the last year trying to get the fashion chain to protect employees from the large quantities of perfume used in the stores. The perfume contains the allergen citronellol.

The shop workers union movement follows the the case of Abercrombie & Fitch
“Abercrombie & Fitch is the first company I’ve heard of that has gotten a injunction from Labour Inspection Authority about designer scent workplace exposure. We will follow up on it, once the case is settled,” said safety consultant in HK Trade Birte Haugaard. She gets more and more inquiries from members about the use of perfume in the workplace.

It’s a great working environment problem that our members should not be exposed to. It is also a problem for customers, but they may after all not to go in there,” she says.

Jeanne Duus Johansen, who heads the Centre for Allergy, warns that the many scents can cause allergies.

“Basically you can develop allergies if you have a daily contact with perfume containing allergenic substances. Many people also experience other symptoms when exposed to fragrances through the air, for example. discomfort and nausea. If you have asthma, you can also react in the airways due to very strong smell,” she says.

Increase in ‘scent traps’ According to the report ‘Growth through Experiences 2011’ there has been a large increase in the use of scent marketing.

In 2008, said 34 per cent of Danish companies that they used scents and music in their marketing. In 2011 the figure had risen to 47 percent – and 75 percent of the companies that they maybe will use it in three to five years.

“We are not very happy that we are led into the here scent traps. Lise Nørgaard, Asthma and Allergy Denmark”

This problem is known and recognized by Asthma and Allergy Denmark, which recently have been contacted by a number of citizens who complain about the use of perfume. The association is concerned about the development:

“We are not very happy that we are led into the here scent traps. We find that there is a large group of approximately 1 million Danes with asthma or hay fever, which is likely to have asthma attacks. And then we have a small group who are deprived of their social lives because they have scent sensitivity,” said communications Lise Nørgaard, who is surprised that there is no regulation in this area.

Heavy scents can cause headaches
Consumer Council goes a step further and calls for a ban on the use of perfume in stores for the sake of customers with asthma and allergies.

At the employers’ organization Danish Chamber of Commerce invites the shops to use scents wisely.

“Heavy scents can cause headaches and make employees sick. Even if you have a particular concept with scents, you have to take it into consideration.”

Article is translated to make it easier to English speaking visitors to read it.

I think scent marketing should be prohibited for health reasons. If everyone starts to use it in shops and other places, how shall we who have asthma and sensitivity go shopping, stay in hotels, work etc? This is a nightmare! We all need to breathe, and what we need to breathe is fresh air unpolluted!

Scent marketing and branding Design scents and fragrances

Nose is one of the firms among others that sell designer scents to others to use in environments and such for use as scent marketing and branding. On can read at their website (translation in English further down):

Meaning:

“Specialists in certified fragrance marketing and atmospheric scent
Fragrances controls a large part of our emotional life, where you for example by using different scents can change people’s values about experiences and reinforce other sensory input. It can for instance apply a first contact with a shop or at the entrance to a hotel or mall. Nose AB has for ten years worked in the field of experience design, where the scent is the media and our technology solutions tools. The company has through its network Air Aroma, the world’s largest developer of fragrances currently 1000 Century doftformulas certified for use in public spaces, and a dozen technical diffuserlösningar for everything from home to professional systems environment.”

How fantastic it sounds it is still every allergic, asthmatic and sensitive persons nightmare. If you are a company, association or other that is thinking of using such scent, think of that you exclude thousands of possible customers from your buisness by using it. People that get sick from scent and perfume / fragrance will aviod  the environment you create and your buisness that they get sick from, and that means they will not use your buisness for doing buisness or buy your products or services. You will actually lose customers and money.

For example if I would enter such environment and got sick, I would never enter there again.

I think all buisnesses should rather go for the scent free policy, because then you get customers from both the non-sensitive and the sensitive persons. That means bigger sale.

Also the extended use of perfume and scent is making more and more people sick in allergies, asthma, ecsema, MCS and other sensitivites. Also people being sick from COPD get sick from perfumes. By using such products it is likely that you also cause your customer health pain.

Think and care. Scent does not only control and bring emosions and memories, it also control and damage the health of thousands.

Pls do not use such products.

On top of this I also question if the use of such products is legal in at least Sweden and Norway? Because in Sweden and Norway we got laws that forbid to exclude groups from accessing areas because of their handicaps. And scent is excluding people with sensitivites to access scented areas.
