“Today starts fragrance-free week, an initiative by the Swedish Asthma and Allergy Association to recognize that there are people who feel badly if exposed to perfume. Ingrid Lindström is one of them. Ingrid Lindström get migraines and can get very sick from stay near someone who uses perfume. it is something that complicates everyday life for many situations, including at work. – I think that they are trying to understand, but many want to put perfume on some special occasions. I think it may be difficult to understand how much it can affect if you yourself do not have personal experience with it, says Ingrid Lindström.”

Perfume limits Martin Kahnberg’s daily life

I collect testimonies from people who are sensitive to perfume and being sick from it so you can learn how it is.

“Martin Kahn Berg can not go to dance or cinema because of the odor hypersensitivity. Now start fragrance free week to get us to leave scent at home.

It is the Swedish Asthma and Allergy Association, which wants to show the need to take account of those perfume restricts lives, those who are affected by chemical intolerance and asthma.

– If Dad had shaved on the ground floor then I started to sneeze in my room upstairs, it was when I was 7-8 years, says Martin Kahnberg from Falkenberg in Sweden.

He gets a tightness in the chest and become so tired that he do not have the energy to stand upright. – I’m never out at the pub or dance halls because I know that there are very many people using perfume. I do not go to the movies either, although I want to go.

It took a long time before Martin realized that several had problems with the same as him. But SHR, sensory hyperreactivity, is quite common. According to a research team at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, is up to half a million Swedes affected, and most are women. Wherefore now the Swedish Asthma and Allergy Association calls for a fragrance week to raise awareness.

For Martin there are no treatments. He has tested medications for 20 years, but nothing has helped. He hopes that more people can think of what they spray each morning. – Think about how much you really need to feel that you feel comfortable. For usually is sufficient very little, says Martin Kahn Berg.”

I would say, drop perfume at all, then you will make so many people happy and healthier, and we can all participate everywhere. Use perfume restrict very many people’s everyday lives, and how would you react if you could not go to school, work, dance, cinema, concert or theater because others fashion mania with perfume?

Fragrance Free Week 44 2015 in Scandinavia – Hanna Nielsen – Expressen.se

Hanna (now 17) tells her story You find more stories like this in Testimonials section.

Screen shot Faximilie, read the whole story here (Swedish).
Testimonial-HannaNilsenSweden

In Scandinavia the Asthma and Allergy Associations has joined together starting the Fragrance Free Week in hope to make people see the health issues they create when they use fragrance products.

Knupp!

Hanna (now 17) gets sick from your perfume

“Every third Swedish are hypersensitive to fragrance. Hanna Nielsen, 17, reacts so strongly that she has been unable to go to school. – It feels like the air stops in my throat. I can not breathe, she says.

Every third person in Sweden is in any way sensitive to fragrance, according to a new research report that TV4 refers to. Asthma and Allergy Association in Sweden Research Department joins report, together with researchers at Sahlgrenska Hospital in Sweden.

Hanna Nielsen, 17, of Danderyd, Sweden, suffer from asthma and is severely allergic to perfumes, a combination that gives serious symptoms. It is enough that someone being close to her has perfume on themselves for her to react strongly.

– I get problems breathing. It feels like the air remains in the throat and do not reach the lungs and I get dizzy, tired, and can be difficult to make contact with, says Hanna Nielsen.

Hanna Nielsen takes medication for her asthma, but for the scent hypersensitivity are not medicines. Therefore, for example, her class have their own classrooms. But school is great and there are many students who use perfume and deodorant. Spray Deodorant is the worst there is, she says.

– I’ve had a lot of problems in school. I have to go home many days, but now it works better because I have a locker in a secluded place, and no one in my class have perfume on, says Hanna Nielsen.

She can not do things that perhaps are obvious for the other 17-year olds. – I avoid going to a party, and rarely go to the cinema. But I’ve learned to live with it and not thinking so much of it otherwise. Instead I meet friends at home with me or with someone else. I usually bike to school, and are usually just in my neighborhood. I travel by bus and subway sometimes, but if someone has perfume on them I have to move, says Hanna Nielsen.

Then graduated from high wants Hanna Nielsen working on cracking the riddle and find a cure.

– I want to be a doctor when I’m graduating. Be asthma and allergy doctor and research in this field, she says. ” Hanna Nielsen

Thanks to Hanna Nielsen for telling her story and to Expressen for publishing it. Well done!

Fragrance Free Week 44 in Scandinavia 2015 – Maud Ström – sverigesradio.se

As you know I collect personal stories both direct and from articles in Testimonials. Maud Ström a former teacher talks about fragrance and health issues.

Photo Faximilie, click to listen in Swedish:

parfymfriaveckan2015-maudstrom

Maud Ström tells her story in Swedish Radio

Right now in progress the perfume-free week in Scandinavia which is a collaboration between asthma and allergy associations in Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway. Unfortunately, there is little to show for activity from the Norwegian Asthma and Allergy Association NAAF in common arrangement, but Asthma and Allergy Association in Sweden makes the more of it.

In this article tells Maud Ström who is a former teacher how it is to be allergic and sensitive to perfume, and calls all to curb the use of perfume. Be fragrance free!

“Right now, the first fragrance free week. It is the Swedish Asthma and Allergy Association wishing to inform on how to take into account how the fragrances and chemicals causes problems in people’s everyday lives.

Just over six percent of the adult population meets the criteria for a diagnosis called hyperreactivity or SHR. For the first time now held a perfumed week that aims to inform and get people to take greater account of those who are hypersensitive to smells.

Maud Ström 61, from Kalmar in Sweden has SHR and have lived with it since the 70s. She worked as a teacher, but had to quit because of all the smells in classrooms. There is no cure or medical treatment have for those affected. For her it has made that take up all their time and that she avoids public places.

– Can you train a week to be fragrance free so it is very much bonus with it, and maybe it can establish a good habit, she says to P4 Kalmar Sweden.

There are as many as a third of the adult population who say reacts to smells and chemicals. According to a report Asthma and Allegy Association Sweden has developed together with Sahlgrenska University Hospital.

Maud Power believe that everyone will now think about how many scented products they have on a normal day, and especially (but not exclusively) to think about how children are affected by chemicals in scented products.

– Since I have a background in the world of school, I am very concerned that there are no figures showing how our children have been affected by this. I am also concerned when I see new parents with strollers, and it just oozes fabric softener, detergent, and a mix of products.

“More and more get it like me, and this I do not want for anyone.” ” Maud Ström

Thank you so much Maud Ström for standing up in public and speak out!

En Ung Asmatikers bønn

Innlegg i svenske Metro avis oktober 2015.

Da har alle like muligheter at ta buss.

Why #airfreshener and #scentedcandles can wreck your health

Putting a wiff of danger in the air

Fresh air what is that? some like us to believe that it is a chemical blend of hundreds of chemicals in mixes to make a scent to lure our nose and brain that there is something pleasant going on, while the truth is that fresh air is mother natures own blend created to make us live a healthy life, and it does not contain any fragrance at all. It is color free and scent free.

Faximilie Daily Mail 3 September 2015 “Chemical sprays, plug-ins and gels for home perfuming are hugely popular but investigators warn that they can include an array of hazardous substances which may cause lung damage and tumours, interfere with our hormones and cause such lifelong problems as asthma. Last month, a study involving Public Health England’s Centre for Radiation, Chemical and Environmental Hazards, warned that plug-in air fresheners produce ‘considerable’ levels of formaldehyde: described by the US government’s National Toxicology Program as a known ‘human carcinogen’. It is most closely linked with cancers of the nose and throat and at the very least, it can also cause sore throats, coughs, scratchy eyes and nosebleeds. It is not the only chemical to fear in air fresheners. Other basic ingredients include petroleum products and such chemicals as p-dichlorobenzene, which hardly bring to mind summer meadows, vanilla pods and sultry spices.” Daily Mail

If you want fresh air you should open a window.

It is also found that air fragranceing can harm your baby even before it is born so that the child get lung problems and expericnce breathing problems.

“In 2013, after a study of more than 2,000 pregnant women, the International Journal of Public Health reported that women who used air fresheners in their homes were significantly more likely to have babies that suffered from wheezing and lung infections.” Daily Mail

The use of air fragrance can also cause other health issues like nausea, headaches, migraine, depression and many more.

“A 2007 study also found that using air fresheners as little as once a week can raise the risk of asthma in adults. The same report found that the risk of developing asthma was up to 50 per cent higher in people who had been exposed to air-freshener sprays.

Many air fresheners also contain substances called volatile organic compounds (VOCs), characterised by their low boiling points which mean they form vapour or gas at room temperature. Experts warn that these can increase the risk of asthma.

Another common ingredient is naphthalene, which has been shown to cause tissue damage and cancer in the lungs of rats and mice in laboratory studies.

Not all of the ingredients used in the actual perfumes are fully listed and critics claim that these can each be made up of several hundred different chemicals.

In March, a team of experts tested six scented candles, with such aromas as clean cotton, strawberry and kiwi fruit.

Behind their delicious labels, however, lay a host of potentially dangerous industrial chemicals, including formaldehyde at levels which, with long-term exposure, are known to raise the risk of respiratory problems and cancer.

The candles also gave off significant levels of VOCs. Furthermore, the study warned that you don’t even need to light such candles because simple evaporation will enable them to pollute your home. Most scented candles are made with paraffin, which brings other problems. The oil by-product gives off ultra-fine soot particles containing acetone, benzene and toluene, usually seen in diesel emissions, and known carcinogens.” Daily Mail

And if you think insence is any safer…

“Burning incense releases tiny chemical particles which can become trapped in our lungs, causing potentially dangerous inflammatory reactions. The research also found that incense particles from commonly used ingredients agarwood and sandalwood are more toxic to our cells’ DNA than tobacco smoke.” Daily Mail

Perhaps it is time to stop this habit of using air scenting and fragrancing in all?

“Air is the Earth’s atmosphere. Air around us is a mixture of  78.09% nitrogen, 20.95% oxygen, 0.93% argon, 0.039% carbon dioxide, and small amounts of other gases. There is an average of about 1% water vapour. It is the clear gas in which living things live and breathe. It has an indefinite shape and volume. It has no color or smell. It has mass and weight. It is a matter as it has mass and weight. Air creates atmosphere pressure. There is no air in the vacuum and cosmos.” Wikipedia

We need air tor breathe and live, not fragrance chemicals.

Oxidizing #fragrance is #allergenic

Allergenic oxidizing fragrance contents

“The oxidizing fragrances in everything from toothpaste to shampoos and deodorants. These fragrances contents may not all be allergenic themselves but can quickly become so when they oxidize. When they are broken down by oxygen in the air to form hydroperoxides that are highly allergenic substances. Nobody knows today how many people in the population who are allergic to the oxidized fragrances because they are not included in the allergy tests done.

Researchers have now discovered that the allergenic substances may have formed already when the oils and fragrances from the supplier. When they are broken down by oxygen in the air to form hydroperoxides that are highly allergenic substances. International studies of eczema patients have shown that five to seven percent of the patients are allergic to the oxidized fragrances.

At the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology at Gothenburg University, have developed a new analytical method that makes it actually possible to investigate hydroperoxides in various consumer products.

– Using mass spectrometry strikes disrupting substances so that they are small fragments and it is the first time that there is a method to find these individual-specific hydroperoxides in small quantities and in complex mixtures, explains Johanna Rudbäck, a doctoral student at the University of Gothenburg.

dr. Johanna Rudbäck has defended her thesis “Allergenic Oxidation Products from Fragrance Terpenes. Chemical Analysis and Determination of Sensitizing Potency “.

This is really important. Now, manufacturers can not sit back and say that the problem does not exist. So far, the perfume industry used a 1800-century approach when examining this type of oxidation products and then find they can not find these little difficult certain substances. Now the industry must deal with the problem in an entirely different way.

Ann-Therese Karlberg explains that it only takes small amounts of hydroperoxides to trigger allergy and eczema in a person who has become allergic to them.

Previously, scientists believed that it would take a long time before fragrances change of air. But when the research team used the new method to analyze the essential oils of lavender and orange peel, they discovered that it went faster than expected.

– We saw that it formed hydroperoxides already when we got the oils from the supplier. This was surprising to us, says Johanna Rudbäck.”

“Spa personnel who works with essential oils in high consentrations is a rather new profession found hurt by handeling the oils. During some years back the skin clinic at Sahlgrenska hospitals have received several patients in the profession of masseuses from several parts of Gothenburg, Skövde and Varberg.

– The read thread here is that they have worked with essential oils smelling of for example lavender, roses or citrus, says Lina Hagwall who is researcher and expert on these substances. When the occupational dermatologic clinic tested the essential oils on several of the patients they could confirm that is was the oxidizing fragrance in the oils they were allergic to.

How can you, in your marketing say that your aromatherapy oil is healing and protective to the skin when you know that there are masseuses who have suffered from allergy and eczema of your oil?”

“Sanna Gunnesson, Mia Senor and Nina Sellman that all three worked at Hagabadet Spa in Gothenburg, where they massaged customers with organic oils from Kerstin Florian Aromatherapy series, and then got allergic reactions, says that it felt immoral to sell oil to customers. I can not do it. I can not stand and lie to a customer that way. It feels wrong to sell a product when you have a rash on the hands, says Sanna Gunnesson.”

“Oxidized fragrances of aromatherapy oils of the brand Kerstin Florian has given several masseurs and spa personnel contact allergy. Masseuses Mia Senor, Nina Sellman and Sanna Gunnesson got so severe discomfort that they had to change profession. Mia Senor showing us pictures of how her hands and arms might look when she came home from work. It almost looks like a burn. The skin on her hands became all swollen, and her fingers were like glued ogether. It stung and did hurt so evil, she says, and explains that her hands were so sore and infected that it even went impossible to work with gloves. Sanna Gunnessons trouble also started with eczema on the hands. Since she had no other jobs she stayed at Hagabadet even though it hurt to massage. Eventually, she was itching all over the body.

Help someone with asthma

What to do?

You can actually make a huge difference for everyone having asthma so they become more healthy and get a better life. Yes You!

What is asthma?

How to recognize asthma?

I know this person

If you know the person, ask what the person can not tolerate, allergies and other stuff they get sick from. When a person have asthma even things they are not allergic to can make their airways kick back and make trouble in form of an asthma attack. When you know what the person get sick from keep this away from the person at all times. If it is something you use yourself. STOP! even if you think in your own mind that it must be a silly thing.

I do not know this person

Around you there are many people who have asthma. One count that about 20-25 % of the population in a country have asthma. Worldwide (numbers from 2011) 300 million people have asthma, in Europe (counting from 2014) approximately 30 million people have asthma, and it is estimated that around 2036 about 400 million people will have asthma worldwide (information from World Health Organization WHO, Ginasthma.com, and EFA). In Norway for example there is in 2015 about 5 million people. 20 % out of 5 million people (counting low) is 1 million people who have asthma (5.000.000 x 0,20 = 1.000.000). How many live in your country? Count how many ( x million people times 0,xx equals?) So you see out of the hundred of people you see around you about 20 of those have asthma. And that is if we count low with 20 %. That is 20 people! So what can you do for all of those?

The nature of asthma is like this:

A person can be allergic to different things that causes asthma attacks, and in addition there are substances that causes irritation to the airways in the lungs causing asthma attacks even if the person is not allergic to them. Asthma comes in 4 different levels from mild to severe. Asthma can be deadly. To live you must be able to breathe, and the nature of asthma is trouble breathing. Think about this when you travel in the room where the public have access, and also in your home if your friends or family have asthma.

Common triggers for asthma:

  • Tobacco smoke
  • Vaping – some but not all react to vaping
  • Fragrance (both male and female scents) – both from the bottle and added to other products.
  • Incense
  • Scented candles and candles
  • Air fragrance, also known as signature scent
  • Airfreshener – what you use to hide bad odor or to fragrance the room
  • Animals – most common is fur and birds. But remember that it is not only the fur and the feathers that is source for the allergy, saliva and skin dandruff too.
  • Food – most commonly known is nuts and peanuts and that is both the whole nut or added to food and oils. Nut allergy can be fatal both taken in and airborne. But even milk, egg, fish and other foods can give such reaction both by eating it and airborne.
  • Exhaust from vehicles, both diesel and gasoline, and maybe others. Gas – actually most people have it bad from gas, but people with asthma have it even worse since they do not tolerate even smaller amounts.
  • Gassing from stuff – it can be gas from filling petrol, diesel, oil, alcohols, solvents, new plastic, cleaning products, ammonia, among many other things.
  • Dust of various kinds, not only house dust.
  • Pollen
  • Flowers
  • Grass
  • Evaporates

So how can you make the world better for a person having asthma to avoid the person get an asthma attack? It is actually rather easy.

  • Do not smoke or vape around other people. Smoke outside away from entrances and ask before you light a cigarette or e-cigarette.
  • Cut out the fragrance and fragranced products, only use fragrance free. The emissions, pollution, from fragrance and fragrance products cause asthma attacks. If you use fragrance and someone tells you to stay clear it is not to be rude it is to stay healthy.  Take the hint and go fragrance free.
  • Do not use incense, it pollutes the air. A sensitive person gets asthma attacks from it (even outdoors). If a person tells you not to use it, it is not to be rude, it is not to be against your religion, it is to stay healthy.
  • Do not use candles and scented candles since they emit a lot of invisible chemicals to the air that triggers an asthma attack. And the smoke from putting them out is just as bad.
  • Airfresheners, products giving away scent and signature scent for marketing is a big no! no! it goes under the same as Fragrance.
  • Turn the engine off as soon as you have stopped the car.
  • Think of fire smoke and other kinds of smoke, gas and off-gassing as pollution and keep such away from others. Ask before you do something that can emit to the air.
  • Avoid if possible to bring animals where there are a lot of people. A rather big percent of the 20 % of the population is allergic. That also goes for your clothes if  you have been around animals. Change your clothes to allergen free clothes and wash yourself.
  • Flowers are lovely, unfortunately many is allergic, so if possible try to keep the flowers packed in during transport home. And if you are going to give someone flowers, ask if they are allergic to it before buying it. Maybe something else is a better gift?
  • Dust and dirty – Keep the place clean from dust, but use as less chemicals as possible to get as clean air as possible. Cleaning and washing agents goes under the same as fragrance products, it causes asthma attacks. Go fragrance free here!
  • Pollen, yes it is a natural thing and not your fault. What you can do is to think of all that is allergic to it, do not brush or dust it off indoors, and if someone tells you to hand your coat outside it is not to be rude it is to stay healthy.
  • Food – Avoid eating where other people travel the society. Of cource you can eat in a restaurant or a cafe’, but avoid eating other places. Rather many get sick from airborne food emits, and when you eat you might get it on handles, seating, doors and so on, and the next one get it on their hands and then in their mouth for example (grown and children).

Remember that things that emits and evaporates to the air can be for sensitive people as pollution regardless of the smell. It is not the smell that hurts it is what is in the smell. We are constructed to breathe air, nothing else. If someone tells you – No!, it is not to be rude, it is to stay healthy. Avoid to have things that evaporate and emits to the air where the public is. Make the air as fresh as possible without additives, additives that is for all of us sensitive nothing more than pollution. Maybe it is a new way of thinking for you, but regardless what you think of it, it is all sensitive persons reality. If you adopt the way of thinking you can make the air cleaner and fresher for us all to breathe. In that way you can help us stay healthy. In polluted air we get sick, in fresh air we are healty. It is that simple. Have a nice day. / Annelie

Science say use less smoke and fragrance

Dagens Medisin on indoor clima

In a article by Dagens Medisin (Medincine Today)  scientist talk about indoor clima.

“Researchers recommend minimal use of perfumes, candles, wood heating and heating of the car to improve the indoor air.”

“Researchers at the Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU) has looked into the indoor environment specifically in the Arctic. This has not been done previously. Now it is just a pilot study published. Indoor air quality in both private homes and workplaces were tested for volatile organic compounds.

– The climatic conditions in the north imposes people a different lifestyle than other places that may lead to increased pollution indoors. In many places, the house can be wrapped in snow six months a year. Pollution caused by the use of wood-burning stove, for example, higher where winter lasts from October through May, compared with places that have winter for three months, says researcher Athanasios Katsogiannis the Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU) and first author of the study.

People spend over 90 percent of their time in a “protected” indoor environment (Bruinen DeBruine, 2008) when cold clima. In addition, it is well known that concentrations of chemical contamination is higher indoors compared with outdoor.

– Indoor air is not currently regulated. Before politicians can set limits, they must get information from as many places as possible about how the condition is, said Katsogiannis.

The study collected air samples from various rooms in private homes and various rooms at workplaces in Tromsø in October and November of 2013. In some cases we found that the concentration of particulate matter was higher than the proposed maximum limits. We saw that using the wood stove and candles, leading to increased exposure to certain types of particles. We assume that dust and particles from the use of black sand on the snow and the use of studded tires on asphalt, also influence indoor climate. This may have various adverse effects on human health, such as asthma.

Will investigate more

Katsogiannis believe this study can be used as a starting point for further studies.

– You should now look at several chemicals found in indoor air in households. Chemical monitoring studies should be done together with epidemiological and toxicological studies where we examine the state of health, disease prevalence, and find out how chemicals affect. It’s the only way we can understand how air quality affects health and a method that can quantify this, says Katsogiannis. He points out that eachand everyone is responsible for its indoor environment. It is therefore our responsibility to protect it. The smoking ban was an excellent start. People should also use less spray, perfume, candles, incense and wood burning. We must remember that when we brush up, it also affects the indoor environment to a greater or lesser degree. Ventilation is generally the most important to reduce toxic substances in indoor air.

Discourages Arctic habit

He discourages especially a habit that many may have where the climate is cold. A habit many of Tromsø and the Arctic have is that you start and run your car engine and let the car warm up in the garage or outside the window. This leads to immediate high exposure to various hazardous chemicals.

For us to be able to say anything definite about the indoor climate in the Arctic, this study should be followed up. Public places such as malls, fitness centers and so on were not monitored in this study.”

Finally I feel like being heard! How wonderful that scientists say the same as I do, and so many others with me, that fragrance product pollutes the indoor air and is unhealthy. Thank you so much, you can not imagine how important this article is to me and how happy I am to read it.

Please, continue the good word and please also look into the use of fragrance washing and cleaning products, air fragrance like air freshener, scented candles, designer scent like fragrance marketing and so on. It is a violation of the need for fresh air for a continued good health.

I totally agree With her. It is about time we get Equality and Availability Access on Equal terms.  Well done to stand up for herself and tell them NO! I am all on her side. I have experienced the same thing myself here in Norway.

Is the air for everyone?

Norway “According to the Norwegian public reports,” NOU 2005: 8 of equality and accessibility. Legal protection against discrimination on grounds of disability. Defined disability as “Fuksjonshemming occurs when there is a gap between the individual’s abilities and design or function in surroundings / environment / buildings.” “

Sensitivity to the environment is protected by law. When triggered sensitivity to pollution in the environment an individual become sick. The ability to be in the environment is therefore limited.

Discrimination and Accessibility From New Year 2009 in Norway it is illegal to discriminate against persons with disabilities in all areas of society. The new law of 2009 gives the right to access everywhere in society.

17.02.2009 Equality and Anti-discrimination Ombud: The freedom to function in society should be equal for everyone.

“Equality and Anti-discrimination Ombud enforces anti-discrimination and Accessibility Act (dtl), which prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability. The Act also has provisions on universal design, see § 9, and individual arrangements, see § 12 Several of the problems with asthma, allergies and sensitivities can raise questions for dtl. “Equality and Diskrimineringsomdudet LDO

5 Year old with fragrance allergy – Sophie – huffingtonpost.com

“Before her mom enrolled her five-year-old daughter, Sophie, in ballet classes at the local recreation center she went to the ballet studio to sniff around. Literally.

For some, the symptoms of a fragrance allergy involve skin irritation. For Sophie, the symptoms are a little more serious. An encounter with perfumes, a laundry vent wafting scented detergent, most cleaning products, or air fresheners, not to mention shampoos, moisturizers, or sunscreens, can send her to the emergency room with respiratory problems.”

Her mom went to the ballet school to check out if it was safe for her daughter to go to school there, but found there had to be changes done before sending her to school.

“She spoke with the staff about the cleaning regime, and learned that the floor was routinely washed with a scented product. After some discussions, the rec center staff agreed to wash the floors of the ballet studio with water on the morning of Sophie’s class, and also asked the teacher to refrain from wearing scented products on the class day.”

“Allergic reactions to fragrance are common, and appear to be on the rise. Many fragrances are factory-made from petroleum. Some are engineered to grow stronger over time (such as some laundry detergent fragrances, designed to fight the smell of dirty clothes). Fragrance allergens commonly used in cleaning products include limonene, Hexyl cinnamal, citronellol, butylphenyl methylpropional, linalool, geraniol, and benzyl Salicylate.”

“Sophie is home-schooled. She can’t go to Target, Walmart, or Marshalls, because of the fragrances there. The family can’t travel by airplane or stay in hotels, so they go car camping to get away. Even having relatives visit is difficult, as many hotels use plug-in air fresheners that linger on clothes and trigger reactions in Sophie. And every time Sophie goes to the hospital for breathing problems, there are a myriad of other artificial fragrances in hand sanitizer and other products that can trigger Sophie’s allergies.”

Since I know first hand what it is like being sensitive and get respiratory problems from fragrance I can only say: – I know what Sophie is going through and I can only say to you all:

THINK BEFORE YOU STINK!

A community diagnosis of symptoms – by MD Aage Hegge Hansen

A community diagnosis of symptoms

MD Aage Hegge Hansen “As the first Norwegian doctor publicly (including on NRK) declared battle against perfume pollution, I have via the web come in contact with patients all over the world.

My contacts have strengthened me in theory that it is the fragrance of hygiene products that are hazardous to health, hygiene is not in itself, as some here at home has believed.

When the fourth of Norwegian adolescents with asthma, it is in reality a national disaster. This gives asthma including increased risk of fatal COPD later in life. But modern asthma therapy is so effective that patient and doctor can easily forget disease is so dangerous degree and that the best treatment is still trying to find the reasons for getting rid of asthma. Unfortunately, few people seem to be interested in it.

It is not many years ago since smokers could freely wide in all arenas. People with sensitive lungs could protest as much as they wanted, the smoke was a legal product that was lit where you found it for good. This is no longer, the health argument has trumped all other arguments, and now tobacco is rolled back using the law. It will thus soon become marginalized as a public health problem.

Now the perfume used is the main challenge, something most people are able to recognize at the individual level. If person A on the job stinks so strongly of perfume, that person B gets sick from it and are not able to be there anymore – it is then that B must quit his job, or is it A, which must begin to meet up with odor-free clothes? I would think that B’s claim of fresh air should be considered more legitimate than A’s desire to use perfume, in unlimited quantity, anywhere and anytime.

Perfume emissions primarily from clothing, hair and skin of the user, but also sits in the house and car interiors, which one gets secondary degassing up to months and years. The gases are causing a number of “conditions” as Sick Building Syndrome (SBS), Building Related Illness (BRI) and Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS). Primary and secondary perfume degassing has become so dominant  cause of disease, and gives such a typical view on the matter, depending on the degree of exposure and time exposed, it may be appropriate to define a separate syndrome; Perfume Related Illness (PRI).

Regardless, perfume and tobacco smoke two sides of the same contamination issue, and perfume use is so extensive now in 2011, that the whole body of society may be said to be sick and perfume damaged, in addition to that they are already and still tobacco damaged. The difference is that while damages to health du to tobacco is under consideration, with the Tobacco Act as medicine, no perfume injuries is taken up for discussion even in the responsible departments and organisations.
With the honorable exception of Asthma and Allergy Association, which at the congress in 2010 adopted a policy of smoke-and Fragrance-free public space. It is the only sensible from a public health perspective.” MD Aage Hegge Hansen, Norway

At the perfumery part 2 – by Annelie Molin

I found I needed two more brushes for my makeup. One eyeshadow brush, and a new lipstick brush. Back to the perfumery again then. :-!

image

But this time I did not want to put myself in the position getting acutely ill in asthma due to the perfume in the air in the perfumery, so I desided to wear my industrial gas mask I sometimes use at work going there.

“- I wonder what they will say, and how they will react when I enter the store in my protective facemask?”, I thought to myself.

image

Well, well, here goes nothing… At least I will not get a bad asthma and allergic reaction to the fumes in the shop.

I entered and first I did not see the lady from last time I was there, only a person new to me. So I was kind of forced to lift the mask to explain to her the situation. I only had the mask off for a few seconds but it was enough for my lungs to close up as a reaction to the perfume, and I had to run out of there to get better and to put it back on. After I went back in I met the lady from last time, and I felt more secure on getting help with less trouble. She told the girl what I bought last time and gave hints on what I needed this time. This way I did not have to talk as much. Using pointing, body language and talking with the mask on we managed to find what I wanted.

Luckily they could hear what I said even with the mask on. As I was about to pay we talked and they asked a lot.

“- Have you had it like this all your life?” and such questions. I think it is alright people ask, it is much better they ask than they go making their own thoughts about it that maybe is incorrect.

“- No, I got a work injury in 2007”, I replied.

“- Oh, that bad”, they said.

And after a little more talking the girl said she also had been working in a bus wash and got injured from it, but she got a skin problem from it. It really is a lot of strong chemicals used in such places and also perfumed cleaning products for indoor cleaning. No wonder people get ill from working with it, we concluded.

Well, chit chatting with the mask on, and the staff took it really nicely, and I got what I needed.

image

Do you think it sounds strange and extreme this? Well, try having acute breathing difficulties for 3 days, I rather go shopping wearing a mask for 5 minutes than getting a asthma and allergic attack for 3 days. When being sensitive one can not afford caring about what others might think. Health must come first.

It is a nice and sunny day and I feel fine thanks to my mask, and I am going to work the rest of the day also.

At the perfumery – by Annelie Molin

(Scroll down for English)

“Oh my, tenkte jeg for meg selv.

At the perfumery

About two weeks ago I bought Fedora perfume free makeup with the pharmacy to get even closer to being fragrance free. I do this both for my own good and because I am going visiting a friend and her family this summer, and there one can not enter with the slightest of fragrance on.

So my old make up brushes were useless since I have had them for 30 years, since before I got asthma and therefore they are filled with different stuff. Not good for me, not good for anyone. Even if I would clean them I would probably not be able to get them clean enough. And I did not want to risk getting fragrance on my new make up.

So the thing to do was to buy new ones. And only place selling make up brushes of quality is the perfumery.

“Oh my, I thought to myself. How will this work?”

I did not have any protective mask in hand, but since the perfumery is the only place selling quality brushes I had to enter.

“I hope it is not too bad, I thought to myself. It is rather early in the day…”

image

I could not have been more wrong. I entered the store and it was perfume heavily clinging to the air.

I asked the lady behind the desk for brushes and she was very helpful and eager to help me. I told her, I am sensitive so I will probably get sick here an maybe have to step outside. She was very understanding. We looked at different brushes but after only 2-3 minutes my lunges started to close up and I had to go out to medicate. I stoud leaning to the pillar with one arm, pumping Ventoline and gasping for air. But I had to get back in. Checked out some more and had to go out again. Same story. In again to pay, and when I stoud there about to pay I felt the warning sign notifying me if I do not get out of there immediately it would become dangerous.

The lady was very nice and chatted. I felt like running out of there to get away from the fumes, but I had to stay because I had to pay.

Later when I came out I was ill, clogged and tighten lungs, hard to breath. I had to buy lunch because I was to work later. I hurried through the store getting what I wanted while using my inhaler, coughing and struggling. Back at the office I was able to use my AeronebGo with Ventoline, and finally got better.

It is bad I think that a person really sensitive to perfume have to go to the perfumery to buy quality make up brushes. It should be sold everywhere make up is sold.
Another good point in this is that perfume free make up needed by those sensitive is unavailable to them because of the perfume gases in the shop. Such as for me for an example.

To the story goes I told the nice lady in the perfumery store that I normally avoid entering her store, even though they sell perfume free make up, trinkets, stockings and more because of the perfume sold there. That is a pity, she said. It should not have to be that way, she said. I commented that she should put up a wall and keep two departments, one for fragranced products, and one for scent free. But that was not possible she replied, because then they would have to hire more staff. But she came with a suggestion, that I could knock on the window and then she could bring test samples to the door so that I do not have to become ill from entering the store. It was very nice of her, but I think not. I then rather go online and buy ecologic make up online from my sofa. If shop owners are not willing to adapt to sensitive people I rather spend my money elsewhere.

But I must say it in a way was very customer service minded of her to offer it to me, the fewer would have even bothered to care.

Perfume and Air pollution – Or Second hand fragrance

(Scroll down for English) This is a sticky post, scroll Down for newer blogposts.

Alt går videre ut i blodet. Continue reading

How to be scent free if you use just a little?

It lies in the word.

That means free from scent.

At the Pharmacy – perfume – by Annelie Molin

I had used up my box of 2 ml Ventoline asthma medicine and needed more. To get this one must go to the pharmacy. It is totally life necessary.

Usually it is manageable, it works for me.

Now Christmas is coming up and the gift shelfs are stacked with products. Even at the pharmacy. But they stack it with perfumed products, and inscense. The air gets filled with what I become sick from. I went into the pharmacy to get medicine to stay healthy from asthma, and had to flee the pharmacy due to what make me ill. I had an asthma attack inside the pharmacy and had to leave the subscription with the pharmacist and run out of there. I had to stand outside in the street, and I had to shout to her through the door what I needed and tell her to deliver it outside where I was waiting. I could not enter. Becoming ill, forced out because of it, and a feeling of being banished, humiliation and illness, pluss everyone staring at me.

This is absolutely intolerable.

One must be able to go to the pharmacy and get ones medicine without getting sick from it. A pharmacy is firsthand for those who are sick and needs their medicine, not for the healthy. Those who want perfume and fragranced products can and should buy that with the perfumery.

On top of it if we take an even closer look at this, it even locks me out from buying perfume free lotion, bandages if I would be in need of it, or what ever you need from a pharmacy, and the pharmacy is the place one can buy perfume free make up. So now I am locked out from getting my subscribtion medicine, lotion, make up a.s.o.

The pharmacy should be available to everyone. It is the place to get life saving medicine.

I am so angry it makes my blood boil.

Enough is enough!
